1.2 INDUSTRY ANALYSIS

Mineral industry is one of the largest industries in the world. Mining industry in
concerned with direct tapping and utilisation of natural resources which are mostly
perishable Kare Earth have greatly influenced our day to-day life which numerous
applications in the areas of magnets, ceramics, electronics, chemicals, optical medical
and nuclear energy. The origin of beach sand is mainly from rocks which are rich in
mineral

Sand mining is significant type of mining in which special expertise is needed. The sand
particle reaches sea through the river. The white sand seen at the beach area contains
the main constituent as quarts. This is lighter than black and as a result of the movement
of the sea, this sand will erode away and Hack sand gets deposited Black sand mining
is all about discovering and putting into use heavy minerals called "Rare Eartha. The
term rare earth denoted the group of 17 chemically similar metallic elements that
include scandium, yttrium and lanthanides Heavy mineral sands are a class of ore
deposit which is an important source of zirconium, titanium, thorium, tungsten, rare
earth elements, the industrial minerals diamond, sapphire, garnet and occasionally
precious metals u gemstones

The Rare Farth elements with their atomic number from 57-71 have their primary
source from the greenish yellow coloured mineral sand which is monazite. It's

Mangalam College Of Engineering

IREL (India) Limited

availability in nature is confined to certain beaches & rocks found in certain countries.
The beaches containing the monazite are found mixed with other minerals 100 Mont of
these are areas for valuable metal. An ore is a mineral from which metal can be
separated economically. This ore are Ilmenite, Rutile, and zircon. Ilmenite and Rutile
forms the ore for titanium, zircon for zirconium; even though Aluminium bearing meal
Ganet and sillimanite are also found along with these beach sand minerals. Ilmenite
which is back in colour continues the major chunk of these minerals (60%) its presence
makes the beaches appear back. These minerals are commercially known as "beach
sand minerals or heavy minerals

Heavy mineral sands are placer deposits formed on usually in beach virements by
concentration due to the specific gravity of the mineral grains. It is equally likely that
some concentrations of heavy minerals (aside from the unusual gold places) exit within
streambeds, but most are of a low grade and relatively small. This group of rare earth
has greatly influenced user das to day life with numerous applications.

A. WORLD SCENERIO

In the year 1789 Fr. William George (1761-1817) discovered ilmenite at Knower in
England and started that this black sand contains some important metals. But he failed
to discover which metal it was After several time in the year 1875, the Hungarian
scientist Martin Heen with Klapporth found the same metal contents in rutile minerals
about which Fr. William George mentioned After a series of investigations are found
those metal contents as titanium after ‘titan’ of Greek mythology.

A global increase in mining capacity is currently underway with numerous new projects
around the world. Current demand is steadily increasing but may not be sufficient to
support the projected production from the new projects. The major mineral sand
deposits of the world as spread throughout different continents across the world The
exploration for minerals and deposits has intensified since the mine 1980s due to
increased demand of use of heavy minerals. The major countries where these deposits
are found in Australia, Canada, India, Kenya and South Africa.

B. INDIAN SCENERIO

India has over 7000-kilometre coastal line and has hape reserve of mineral in the beach
and specifically in southwest coast of Kerala and Maharashtra IRE was incorporated in
16-05 1950 as a private limited company under the Indian Companies Act 1913 jointly
owned by the Government of India and Government of Travancore, Kochi. In 1963, the
shares of the state Travancore were handed over to the Government of India and Indian
Rare Earth Limited become a full pledged central government undertaking under the
department of atomic CDCTTY IREL, by virtue of section 43-A of the Companies Act
1956.

In India the installed production capacity for ilmenite is around 5-2 lakh TPA (5-6% of
global ilmenite production) and the production of ilmenite and rutile during 2009-2010
was ever 3-5 lakh tones and 1300 tons respectively.

C. STATE SCENARIO

Kerala is bets with a long coastal belt. Kerala state is endowed with a number of
occurrences or deposits of mineral such as heavy mineral sands (Ilmenite, rutile, and
Zircon Sillimanite) China Day, tile and brick day, silica sand, lignite, lime shell, granite
etc. The major mineral-based industries like Indian rare earth hid Chavara (Kerala),
minerals & metals Itd Chavara (KMML) Malabar cement, Vayalayar), Travancore
cements (Kottayam), kundara ceramics (Kollam), English Indian day ltd (EICI.X
Thiruvananthapuram), Excel Glass Industry (Alappuzha), Kerala days & ceramics
products Itd (palayangadi, Kannur) are some of the mineral based industries in the state.
IREL itself has got two plants in the state. One is at Chavara and the other in Alava.
Chavara plant is engaged in the processing of beach sand deposits available on the coast
belt of Neendakara to kayamkulam.

Chavara beach width of 225 m is divided into 8 blocks numbered 1 to 8 for separating
ilmenite for the manufacture of Ti02. The blocks are apportioned between Kerala
minerals & metals ltd, a state government undertaking and IREL, a government of India
enterprise under the department of Atomic Energy.

D. CURRENT SCENARIO

India is a developing country so the development of industrialisation is the very

important factor. The marketing demand of mineral is rapidly increase with time. The

resources of beautiful ornamental granites in the state are being exported to the different
countries at the current time. The growing of mining and mineral business largely
increases and other private companies have come into these fields. The resources are
non-renewable and the availability of resources are decreasing continuously, so the
mining industries are engaged in the process of searching other new areas of resources
form.

HISTORY OF THE ORGANISATION

IREL’s history should not be narrated without mentioning the name of the Germen
chemist Mr. Herr Schomberg who has realised that the shining yellowish brown
particles sticking to coir, a coconut fiber shipped from India (1909) contained Monazite.

This sparkled the discovery of vast deposit of monazite a rich source of rare earths a
group of elements with a wide variety of uses in industry and science. A few plants
were operating at Chavara and Manavalakurichi for the separation of monazite.

1948:- The govt. of India setup atomic energy commission under the chairmanship of
Dr: Homi Bhabha. The export of Monazite was stopped and the possibility of setting
up a facility to process the beach sand mineral for the production of Rare Earths was
examined.

1950:- IREL was incorporated at Bombay

1951:- IREL become the full-fledged govt. undertaking under the Department of
Atomic Energy and commissioned construction of its rare earths plants at
Udyogamandal in Kerala.

Mangalam College Of Engineering

IREL (India) Limited

Modem business is based on decentralization it means grouping of various

activities under different departments. It is based on the management principle of
“specialization”. Various departments enable the organization to segregate different
activities on the basis of functions performed as well specialization required. It enables
the organization to make best utilization of the available resources by saving time,
reducing wastage, improving the overall quality of its products, operations etc. Every
organization made up of different departments. Each department contributed to the
running of the business.

According to the function of the organization is divided in various departments has a

general manager as its head and a deputy general manager assisting him. IREL has
separate department head for each department.

IREL (India) Limited is headed by Chief General Manager who holds the thread of the
functioning of the various departments. Each of the department has a general manager
as its head and a deputy general manager assisting him IREL has a separate
departmental head for each department. The following are the departments of IREL.

• Human Resource Department

Human Resource Department

REL(India) Limited Chavara takes place it's highly motivated and trained human
resource that has maximised its performance and thereby its growth and profit. Morale
of the employees remains facilitating smooth working of the company. Skill
requirement related to different disciplines are identified and training programs and
workshops are efficiency of the human resource.
HR department lead by HOD & Section Head to assist him. The Security Department
and Time Office are working under the HOD of HR Department Executives &
Personnel are working under section head of HRM People are the most important
resources of an organization.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITY OF HR DEPARTMENT

Recruit candidates

HR needs to understand the organization’s needs and make sure those needs are met
when recruiting for new positions. It’s not as simple as just throwing an ad up on Indeed:
you’ll need to analyse the market, consult stakeholders, and manage budgets.

Hire the right employees

Human resources is in charge of arranging interviews, coordinating hiring efforts, and

onboarding new employees. They’re also in charge of making sure all paperwork
involved with hiring someone is filled out and making sure that everything from the
first day to each subsequent day is navigated successfully.

Process payroll

17

Mangalam College Of Engineering

IREL (India) Limited

Payroll is its own beast. Every payday must have taxes calculated and hours collected.
Expenses need to be reimbursed and raises and bonuses need to be added in as well. If
you think it’s a chore doing taxes just once a year, imagine what it must be like to be in
HR and make sure they’re properly deducted every pay period.

Conduct disciplinary actions

This responsibility may be why HR tends to get a bad rap. When navigated
inappropriately, disciplinary actions can lead to the loss of a valuable employee and can
even result in litigation or a poor reputation. But when handled appropriately,
disciplinary action can result in the success of an employee.

For instance, if a company notices that a particular employee is routinely late and
continues being late even after the employee has received several warnings, HR could
step in and investigate the reason for the tardiness. It may be an opportunity to extend
benefits such as counselling to the employee or offer additional resources to help the
employee learn to be on time. Instead of taking on the cost of firing and then recruiting
a replacement for that employee, it could be a learning opportunity that could enhance
that employee’s career.

On the other hand, sometimes disciplinary action isn’t the best course to take and an
employee should be let go. The best human resources departments know when an
employee isn’t the right fit for a company and would be happier somewhere else. It’s
up to HR to develop a strong enough relationship with managers and employees alike
to identify the cohesiveness and health of a team.

Update policies

Policies need to be updated (or at least examined) every year as the organization
changes. It’s HR’s job to make official updates to policies and to suggest changes to
policies when they no longer serve the company or the employees. Sometimes a policy
should be updated as a reaction to an occurrence. HR should always be included in and
consulted with regarding these decisions.

Maintain employee records

Maintaining HR records is mandated by law. These records help employers identify

skill gaps to help with the hiring process and to analyse demographic data and comply

18

Mangalam College Of Engineering

IREL (India) Limited

with regulations. They also contain personal details and emergency contacts for each
employee.

Conduct benefit analysis

Staying competitive is of prime importance when trying to attract the best talent. A
promising recruit may choose a different company with lesser pay if the benefits are
more attractive. HR should routinely investigate similar companies to see if their
benefits are competitive.

Providing career growth

Stagnation is bad for business, and it’s smart to keep your best employees with the
company. HR can provide career paths to help guide each employee to a long future
within the company. HR can then check in periodically to further guide employees on
their career paths.

Offering continuing education

Sometimes the career growth mentioned above requires additional training. Your
organization may provide educational assistance, and HR can help determine which
classes and training programs would be best for an employee on his or her designated
career path. HR can also work with managers to ensure that the employee’s work
schedule is flexible enough to allow the employee to attend classes.

Training and supporting managers

Managers aren’t born. They’re created. HR can help provide management guidance to
managers, making sure that department and teams are as healthy and functional as
possible. This may include periodically sending managers to formal trainings and
retreats.

Supporting health and wellness

It’s important to remember that employees are people. They’ll need help weathering
mental illness, health issues, debt, pregnancies, adoption, and myriad other life
occurrences. HR can help support employees through any of these and other
circumstances.

19

Mangalam College Of Engineering

IREL (India) Limited

When to contact human resources

An HR department that never interacts with employees isn’t doing its job. While you’re
developing an onboarding procedure, educate new employees on when to reach out to
HR and what resources HR has to offer. The HR department should regularly schedule
one-on-one interviews with employees to check in on their career progression, comfort
in their roles, and any other issues the employee may be having.

MINING DEPARTMENT

In IRE (India) Limited the raw materials for production process are collected through
mining process. The production process starts with the collection of beach sand from
various places for collecting this beach sand IRE uses the following two methods Sea
Washing and Dredging

➢ SEA WASHING

Raw sand is collected from sites where deposits are occurred due to natural beach
washing Presently IRE owns two sites one at Vellanathuruthu Ponmana and one at 132
mining area. There is a heavy mineral deposit over a length of 22.5 Km. They are found
over or coastal belt having an average width of 800 meters. The sea waves deposit the
minerals sand on the beach line and it is collected. Then it is sent to the mineral
separation plant.

➢ DREDGING

The plant DWUP used for the mechanised recovery of minerals from the beach sand.
The DWUP consist of a floating dredging plant operating hydraulically and electrically
which could be moved from one place to another based on the requirement. The plant
is floating in an area having a water depth of 6 meters. The sand along with water in the
form of slurry (a mixture of sand and water) is pumped to the heavy Upgradation
equipment’s. The equipment consists of a series of transfer bin rotating screens called
Trommer, Spiral Separators, Hydro cyclones, pumps etc all being electrically operated.

20

Mangalam College Of Engineering

IREL (India) Limited

The DWUP can dredge about 40 to 60 tons per hour. The raw sand having an average
at 40% heavy minerals is fed to the floating plant and updates it to 85 to 90% mineral
content. The waste sand (Quarts) from DWUP is used for backfill the dredged area.

PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT

The act of making goods and services is called production. In everyday speech
Production refers to the act of creating something production involves the physical
conversion of raw materials into tangible goods.

In IRE raw sand is collected through mining process. The sand is filtered through spirals,
cones and jigs to produce a bulk concentration of heavy drying, screening.
electromagnetic and electrostatic processes and used for separation. Minerals found in
coastal areas are collected either manually or mechanical means, productions start from
the mining process.

MINING PROCESS

The mining and processing of beach sand are achieved with a

good mixture of modern mechanical devices and manual labour. Beach sand
is collected from the surface of a depth of a meter with the help of dredgers.
For a processing of beach sands, the difference in electric conductivity,
magnetic susceptibility and specific gravity of their constituents are taken into
consideration. The beach sand is treated by well gravity methods using spiral,
cones and jigs to produce minerals.
IRE collects raw sand in two
different ways:

1. Sea washing or beach washing

2. Mechanical dredging

MINERAL RECOVERY PLANT

The mineral recovery plant consists of a floating dredging plant

which could be moved from one area to another. This is called floating
mineral recovery plant. The plant is placed in an area which has a water depth
of 9 meters. The sand along with water is sucked into the main unit. First the
mixture is sent to a storage tank called Trammel. Then it is sending for
separation. The waste sand and some quantity of water is pumped out. The
mineral content is pumped from the MRP to concentrate Upgradation plant.
The MRP dredges about 40-60 tones per shift.
CONCENTRATE UPGRADING PLANT (CUP)

The raw sand collected from different sources had different

composition. They are further upgraded using the CUP. In the Concentrate
Upgrading Plant enriches the concentrate from various sources to above 90%
heavy minerals using spiral separators making use of gravity techniques.
MINERAL SEPARATION PLANT (MSP)

In the mineral separation plant individual minerals are separated making use of
the following four properties of the minerals namely
1. Electrical conductivity
Electrostatic separation is used in electrical conductivity.

2. Magnetic Susceptibility
High and low intensity magnetic separators used.
3. Density Difference
Floater separation.

4. Surface Property
Froth floatation.
The concentrate from concentrate upgrading plant (CUP) having uniform
composition with above 90% heavy minerals content is dried using Fluidised Bed
Drier (FBD). This is then subjected to electrostatic separation using different type of
electrostatic separators. There by it is separated into two fractions namely conducting
and non-conducting fractions.

4.2 Contribution of the Intern to the Organization

In the beginning of internship started with a detailed explanation about the functioning
and environmental aspects of organization. The work assigned were able to complete
on time. The information regarding the various departments in the organization was
collected. The main work is in marketing department such that I can understand all
dealings in marketing areas like sales, product delivery, register entry, invoice, e-way
bill and other marketing related procedures. I have a gold chance to analyse
Quotations ,Performa invoice, Payment registers license register Priority
registers ,Delivery registers ,Sales register Shipping register Daily statement of
production, sales and dispatch, Quarterly statement regarding export ,Monthly report to
cabinet ,Production, sale and stock of minerals (monthly) ,Performa for submitting
quarterly export performance to federation of Indian export Organization, COB
license .Bank receipt voucher, Cash receipts, DD register ,Gate pass,
Enquiry/order/amendment from parties and Customer feedback questionnaires and
is also study some of these.

Task Accomplishments made

• minutes preparation
• new customer list preparation
• Cross check the purchase order received in the month of February
• Error correction of provisional a/c summary of the marketing department
• calculate the total of royalty DMF and NMET (excel work)

New Ideas and Concepts

IREL being a central government enterprise lacks efficiency in packing and marketing
and after sales support. Customers require good sales support. Defects due to loss of
materials are major problems for the customers. As the cost of product and the credit
facilities are based on the quantity purchase such industries are not benefited from IREL
marketing policies. Prompt delivery and timely action is one where the IREL can put
some effort to improve the present scenario. The company can start their own plants for
the production of various value-added products through diversification

Involvement in major assignments

• preparation of minutes on the period of 2020-21

• preparation of 7-year sales report of sillimanite
• preparation of new customer list
4.3 Knowledge gained from Internship

IREL, a public limited company under the government of India is one of the major
exporters of minerals. They got support from government of India and the department
of Atomic Energy. They maintain a strong and symbiotic relationship between the top
management and the lower-level management and a cordial relationship between
management and trade unions. IREL possess highly skilled managers and experienced
workers having excellent knowledge and experience about mining and the production.
Company holds abundance of raw materials in the company premises itself and the
constant up gradation of technology.

In the beginning of internship started with a detailed explanation about the functioning
and environmental aspects of organization. the main work of marketing

department is handling all procedures .I have chance to learn all sales procedures very
well such as analyse Quotations ,Performa invoice, Payment registers license register
Priority registers ,Delivery registers ,Sales register Shipping register Daily statement of
production, sales and dispatch, Quarterly statement regarding export ,Monthly report to
cabinet ,Production, sale and stock of minerals (monthly) ,Performa for submitting
quarterly export performance to federation of Indian export Organization, COB
license .Bank receipt voucher, Cash receipts, DD register ,Gate pass,
Enquiry/order/amendment from parties and Customer feedback questionnaires

The main function of marketing department is Execute customer purchase order. To

collect customer feedback and to initiate actions to improve the customer satisfaction.
To initiate corrective and preventive actions based on customer compliance. To define
the responsibilities and authorities of marketing personnel.

IRE takes the nature boundary in the form of beach sand and separates it to extract rare
earths and minerals. These materials go for a wide variety of products like ceramics
paints, flints of lighters, detergent etc. IRE produces the major beach sand heavy

minerals like Ilmenite, Rutile, Zircon, Sillimanite, brown Ilmenite and value-added
products like Zirflour and Microzir The internship at IRE was an unforgettable
experience. The organizational atmosphere prevailing at IRE is not that of a timid public
sector unit. The concern for the environment and social responsibility are worth
studying. This helped in having a practical exposure to real practice in organization.
This provides insight into the functioning and coordination of purchase department in
an effective organization. There are some suggestions which could improve the
performance and functioning of the organization. The company can start their own
plants for the production of various value-added products through diversification. Being
a strategic industry, the company will always have the support from the central
government. Then the recent efforts to tie up with other mining companies like KMML
Chavara. Higher demand for products and the favourable state government policies like
prohibition of entry of private companies into the mining sector and acquiring
technology to utilize their available resources. IREL can give more training to
employees to reduce their absenteeism and improve morale of the employees. The
vertical and horizontal communication inn the organization is to be improved. The
organization can also increase the work load of the employees within a limit for their
better utilisation of time and performance. The target was achieved within the time limit.
The visit to various departments made to get acquainted with the trends in the
functioning and organizational structure of the organization. The discussions with the
section head of the departments were held and were able to understand the proper
operations of every department. Even though some of them where busy in their schedule
they give appointment and discussions took place in detail about the proper functions
of the departments. And the internship was successfully completed on 25th march 2022.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Internship is a process of attaining new knowledge and increasing skills from working
in a particular section in a particular department. It was a great deal to be a part of IREL
‘s marketing department.

IREL, Chavara is the leading suppliers of beach sand minerals to the nation. The
company, in its search of new heights, has reached a level of quality which is
remarkable. It is one among well performing companies in Kerala engaged in the
process of processing rare earth products available among the coastal belts. The timely
adaptation of technological innovations has been the hallmark of IRE since its inception.
It was found out that the employees are satisfied with the welfare policies which are in
practice and the scale of pay at present after revision. The intervention of political
parties continued to be a menace. IREL, Chavara is capable of converting its threats
into opportunities with the guidance and control of the top management whose
leadership quality is impeccable.

IREL, in the constant pursuit of excellence, have established a reputation as the leading
supplier of beach sand heavy mineral in the country. In the light of new changing
economic scenario IREL is poised to adapt a two-pronged strategy namely
Consolidation and expansion of operations and joint-venture for value addition and new
production facilities.

The internship at IRE was an unforgettable experience. The organizational atmosphere

prevailing at IRE is not that of a timid public sector unit. The concern for the
environment and social responsibility are worth studying. This helped in having a
practical exposure to real practice in organization. This provides insight into the
functioning and coordination of marketing department in an effective organization. One
main thing Intern have learned through this internship is time management skills as well
as self-motivation. At last, this internship has given new insights and motivation to
pursue for career in review this internship has been an excellent and rewarding
experience.
