The situation that I had decided on was the recent push to modernize Harley Davidson
motorcycles and their redefinition of existing products. They had recently wiped the Dyna line
out of existence and recategorized those motorcycles in with Soft-tails. Furthermore, this last
year they did the same with Sportsters to reclassify the traditional Sportster with a new and
improved Sportster S with a new body and engine. Lastly, they are not American made anymore
as parts production has been moved overseas. My role with the company is that of a customer.
2) Describe how the human resources of the organization influenced the situation.
With changing times, Harley Davidson had to play catch up for the time that they stuck
hard to their roots. People wanted to see a change and so Harley decided to give it to
them in 2018 starting with production being shipped overseas. However, that is not the
change they wanted. Then they started getting rid of what makes a Harley, a Harley by
changing categories and altering the most popular and traditional lines.

Within the organization, when they hire employees, they hire other riders according to
how much they ride and related to Harley Davidson. Those individuals all feel very
comfy saying that Harley is the only brand out there worth buying. I have heard from
many other riders that the Harley community almost forms a cult in a sense. Some Harley
riders go as far as to only wave and talk to other Harley riders at biker events, shunning
the rest of the biker world. Making Harleys undesirable due to attitude alone.
Furthermore, Harley riders have always been more worried about style and presence over
speed and durability. Harleys HR division maintains that through the organization when
3) Recommend how you would use the human resources for an alternative course of
action regarding your case.
Harley first has to change through the people. The riders are slowly wanting to see
something new and different as younger riders are now in the market for motorcycles.
However, the individuals that they hire don’t represent the majority of younger riders
very well. Most of the sales team still pushed the fact that Harley is timeless and
traditional, when the sales team should be proud and shifting to new sales techniques and
If the excitement doesn’t come from other riders, it will be very hard for Harley to make
the change that they are trying to make. Which is a huge reason as to why they are failing
to launch and sell these new bikes successfully. There is a market for them (without
destroying their history and tradition, I might add), but they are not doing it properly.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about this frame.
Having learned how Harley hires and how they are failing to shift mindset along with
inventory, I would be doing a lot more events with just the new bikes. For example,
Harley Davidson stores often put on events over the weekend where certain vendors
come in to talk with the riders. They will have music, food, and brands like COBRA and
V&H. That is the perfect opportunity for Harley to use those products on a new
Beyond that, they often have a bike washing station where they have women working to
add appeal to those older bikes. They could also hire a female presenter to talk about
engine specs as the bike is running and allow riders to take it for a spin. They need to hire
more people who are willing to step out of the comfort zone like Harley already tried to.
They can create all the products they want, but if they don’t have a team that wants or
knows how to push the new bikes, then it is continuously going to fail.
