Instructions: Discuss some ideas by answering the following questions. Explain and/or
give examples.
1. As a teacher, what do you think are the challenges in conducting a speaking or oral
communicative task through a "group activity?"
There are many factors that would interfere during communicative task, it may
be the pronunciation issues, and the usage of or interference with the mother tongue
among pupils. Since we are dealing with diverse students, oral communication issues
may occur between them because of their restricted vocabulary. According to the study,
students had not formed the habit of lengthy listening and reading and that is why the
guidance also of the teacher is essential when conducting communicative task, it is very
possible that one may feel shy so constant visit in every is needed.
2. Do you think speaking tasks for beginners should be highly structured and relatively
concrete? Why? Why not?
One of the most important criteria of modern teaching methods is that teachers
should create an English-speaking environment in which students can engage in real-
world dialogue, activities, and tasks that develop spoken language. So yes,
communicative tasks for beginners should be highly structured and relatively concrete
and this is supported by an author which is Lee, S. (2000) that claims that
communicative task for beginners are more effective when they are tightly structured
and include concrete subtasks like for example making list. This would lead to effective
communicative competence for them to have knowledge about how and when to use
utterances appropriately.
3. Which role is the teacher playing here? The teacher listens to the students having a
group discussion and takes notes of sample language to go over later. As a learner? As
a mentor? Or as an assessor? Explain.
The role that the teacher is playing there is teacher as a learner, observations
and taking notes during classes is a good form an effective teacher that is open in
learning towards its students. In this way, it assists educators in incorporating new tools
and tactics into the learning process in order to improve the learning growth of their
pupils. As what they always say, a good teacher is also an excellent student. You learn
something new every day and it is teacher can never stop learning since they do not
know everything. So, in a teaching position, being humble and modest means that you
can continue to learn from someone who is younger than you.
4. When setting up group discussions in the classroom, is it a good idea to keep friends
together whenever possible? Why?
It is a given fact that students work best together if they know or trust each
other, but a teacher must not always only group those students who already belonged
to a circle of friends because it is important that all of them interacts and also to be
sure that no one is left behind. It is a good idea to while planning group discussions in
the classroom. keep friends together whenever possible by varying group sizes from
time to time.
5. Do you think gestures are important part of spoken language that should be covered
in speaking lessons? Why?
Yes, it is quite important, various research appear to back up the concept that
gestures aid speech production and recall in some ways. There is significant evidence
that gestures alter listeners' comprehension of speech across studies. When gestures
are used to represent information that is redundant with words, they help with
comprehension (Goldin-Meadow et al 1999, McNeil et al 2000). In both interpersonal
and public conversations, gestures are extremely significant, they allow the speaker to
draw the audience's attention to himself and would also contribute to build their
confidence in public speaking.
