Radian Measure and Arc Length

There are two ways of measuring angles: Degrees and Radians

Degree: 1 is one 360th part of a full circle.

Degrees are used to express directionality and angle size. If you stand facing
directly north, you are facing the direction of zero degrees, written as 0°. If you
turn yourself fully around, so you end up facing north again, you have "turned
through" 360°; that is, one revolution (one circle) is 360°.

Radian: 1 radian is the angle made at the center of a circle by an arc whose length is
equal to the radius of the circle.

m<COD = 1 radian

Why do we have to learn radians, when we already have perfectly good degrees?
Because degrees, technically speaking, are not actually numbers, and we can only
do math with numbers. This is somewhat similar to the difference between
decimals and percentages. While “75%” has a clear meaning but you must first
convert to the decimal equivalent form, 0.75. The 360° for one revolution, once
around, is messy enough. You know that the circumference C of a circle with
radius r is given by C = 2πr. If r = 1, then C = 2π. Why is the value for one
revolution in radians the irrational value 2π? Because this value makes the math
work out right.

As discussed in previous lessons, and Arc of a Circle is a "portion" of the circumference
of the circle.

The length of an arc is simply the length of its "portion" of the circumference.  The
circumference of a circle is considered to be an arc length.

The letter s is typically used to represent arc length. In the diagram below,  subtends
.

3) A sector of a circle (slice of a circle) has a radius of 12 cm. and an angle of 65º.
To the nearest tenth of a cm., find its arc length.

4) In circle O, the radius is 4, and the length of minor arc   is 4.2 feet.  Find the
measure of minor arc   to the nearest degree.

5) Alison is jogging on a circular track that has a radius of 140 feet.  She runs along
the track from point R to point N, a distance of 230 feet.  Find to the nearest
degree, the measure of minor arc  .
6) Given shape ABO, find the perimeter of the sector
