ABOUT THE AUTHORS

John O'Byrne is a Dubliner who specialises in writing word games, parodies

and 100-word novels. His work has been published in Dublin Opinion, New
York Magazine, RTE, BBC, The Sunday TimesSpectator

was published in the
in 1978. He has been struggling
unsuccessfully with an anagram of Cliff Richard for almost six years, and was
delighted when knighthood struck.

Jerry Ring-based award-winning short story writer who has also

written for radio. He has recently completed his first novel and was looking
around for something to do. There being no suitable anagram of his own
name he inflicted himself on everybody else.

INTRODUCTION

An anagram is a word or phrase formed by reordering the letters of another

word or phrase (

). It owes its origin to the Greek poet
Lycophron and has a long tradition in world literature. Louis the Thirteenth
(Shh! Hot nuttier elite

title of Samuel Butler's first novel
(1872) is a transposition of
"
". Lewis Carroll and James Joyce were gifted anagrammatists.

The scrambling of letters is a fascinating game of world play. Hidden within

each word or expression is another meaning attempting to escape. Some may
emerge like diamonds of the finest cut and brilliance, razor-sharp, dazzling
and precious; others may appear shaggy, course in texture, confused and
contradictory creatures struggling to meet the reader's gaze. Nonetheless,
each gifted darling strives to tell a story about its parent. How else would we
gain knowledge of the dark underbelly of existence?

In Other Words (or Wonder Hits) has been over two years in the making.
Although it does purport to be a celebration of the historic links between
Ireland and America, it was the proposed visit of President Clinton to Ireland
that gave us the excuse to flaunt our wares and excise our inferior European
anagrams (the Serbo-Croat ones are particularly weak). If Boris Yeltsin
(soberly I isn't

this. Enjoy!

John O'Byrne & Jerry Ring - Grr.& Enjoy her job in N.Y.

"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather an scornful tone, "it means just
what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less". "The question is," said Alice,
"whether you can make words means so many different things."
