3. APPLICANTS TO NOTE
1. Before filling in the application, read the Prospectus carefully. Preserve the Prospectus till the completion of the course.

2. The Applicant has to detach and fill in the following :


(i) Application Form, (ii) Computer Coding Sheet and (iii) Address Slip.

3. The Application must be accompanied by ALL THE ORIGINAL CERTIFICATES as stated in the Prospectus
and the Registration Fee of Rs.100/-.

4. The Applicant has to state clearly the Degree Course with subject which he/she wants to study.

5. Photographs to be affixed :
1. One on the Application Form.
[Attested by a Gazetted Officer / Faculty / Officials of the University with Seal]
2. One on the Address Slip.
3. One on the reverse side of the Coding Sheet.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR PAYMENT OF FEES


Students are advised to avail themselves of the facility offered by the BANKS designated
by the Institute of Distance Education University of Madras, spread all over INDIA for
payment of fees relating to remittance of Registration fee, Tuition fee, Examination fee
and other fees as applicable without any additional charges. A challan in triplicate is
appended to the Prospectus for the purpose of remittance of fees. The challan is also
available in all the designated BANK branches. In places where there is no designated BANK,
the students may make the payment by means of DEMAND DRAFT obtained
from any Nationalised / Schedule Bank drawn in favour of “THE DIRECTOR, IDE,
UNIVERSITY OF MADRAS” payable at Chennai.

ADMISSION OF CANDIDATES FROM OTHER STATES


1. Candidates from other states should submit their applications at any one of the Study Centres of the
Institute of Distance Education (IDE), University of Madras, of the State concerned for admission to
various courses offered by IDE.

2. Applications received by post from the candidates of other States will automatically be linked with the
IDE Study Centre of the State concerned.

3. Applications received by post from the candidates of other States where there is no Study Centre of this
Institute, will be linked with the nearby IDE Study Centre of the other State and candidates should undergo
the courses offered by this Institute through such allotted IDE Study Centre only.

4. ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS

THREE YEAR DEGREE COURSES

[A] ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION

Admission to the First Year B.A. / B.Lit. / B.Sc. / B.Nat. / B.Music. / B.Com. / B.B.A. / B.C.A.
Degree Courses is open to candidates who have passed any one of the following Examinations :

(1) The Pre-University Examination conducted previously by the University of Madras or any other
University accepted as equivalent thereof by the authorities, University of Madras.

(2) The Higher Secondary Examination [Academic or Vocational Stream] conducted by the
Government of Tamil Nadu [or] other States [or] Union Territories [or] an Examination accepted
as equivalent thereof by the authorities, University of Madras.

(3) There should be a minimum gap of two clear years between the date of appearance in the
examination in which the candidate has passed the S.S.L.C. [X Standard] and Higher Secondary
Examination (+2) or any other equilavent Examination as prescribed in the Prospectus for joining
the First Year of Degree Course.

(4) The Senior School Certificate Examination [XII Standard] conducted by the Central Board of
Secondary Education held in 1979 or thereafter provided that they have been declared to have
passed the examinations in not less then 5 subjects of which ENGLISH shall be one.

(5) The Indian School Certificate Examination [12 Years] conducted by the Council for Indian School
Certificate Examination held in 1977 or thereafter, provided that they have been declared to have
attained the pass standard in the examinations in not less than 5 subjects of which ENGLISH shall
be one.

(6) Those who have passed the Plus Two examinations of the National Open School, New Delhi.

(7) Pre-Technical Examination previously conducted after 11 years of study by the State Board of
Technical Education and Training, Chennai.

(8) Intermediate Examination [2 years] of Andhra Pradesh, Pre-Degree Examination [2 Years] of Kerala
and Pre-University Examination [2 Years] of Karnataka under the 10+2 pattern.

(9) Candidates who have successfully completed 12 or 13 years of education in any State in India or
Abroad under 11+1 or 10+2 or 11+2 pattern, subject to approval by the authorities of this University.

(10) Candidates who have successfully completed the Second Year Foundation Course of the
Open University System of the Madurai-Kamaraj and Annamalai Universities.

(11) Candidates who have successfully passed the Three Year Diploma Examinations conducted by
the State Board of Technical Education and Training, Chennai after passing 10th Standard
Examination.

(12) Candidates who have passed the G.C.E. [Advanced Level / Principal Level] with not less than
3 subjects in the ‘A’ Level with ENGLISH in the ‘O’ Level / SUBSIDIARY Level.

(13) Candidates holding ‘Diploma in Commercial Practice Certificate’ [Three Year Course] of the
Directorate of Technical Education & Training, Chennai, Government of Tamil Nadu or any other
Diploma as equivalent thereto provided that they satisfy the eligibility conditions prescribed in the
regulations are eligible for lateral admission to the Second Year B.Com. [Commerce] Degree Course
of this University.

(14) Candidates holding ‘Diploma in Computer Science and Engineering (or) Electrical and Electronics
Engineering (or) Electronics and Communication Engineering Certificate’ [Three Year Course] of
the Directorate of Technical Education and Training, Chennai, Government of Tamil Nadu or any
other Diploma as equivalent thereto provided that they satisfy the eligibility conditions prescribed
in the regulations are eligible for lateral admission to the Second Year B.C.A. Degree Course of this
University.

(15) Candidates who have successfully completed 10th Standard and Three Year Diploma Course in
Music recognised by the authorities, University of Madras are eligible for lateral admission to the
Second Year B.Music Degree Course of this University subject to the conditions that they should
appear and pass all the papers from First Year onwards as prescribed in the regulations to
successfully qualify the B.Music Degree Course.

(16) Candidates who have already undergone their First Year and Second Year Undergraduate Degree
Courses and passed or discontinued their studies through the Institute of Distance Education,
University of Madras [or] through the Colleges affiliated to the University of Madras including
Autonomous Colleges under the purview of this University [or] through the Colleges affiliated to
other Universities including Autonomous Colleges under the purview of the Universities concerned
recognised by UGC/AIU are eligible for lateral admission to the Second Year and Third Year Degree
Courses respectively for the courses offered by the IDE subject to approval by the authorities of this
University.

LATERAL ADMISSION
LATERAL
Students who have successfully completed their First Year / Second Year (or) discontinued
Second Year / Third Year Undergraduate Degree Courses through the Colleges including Autonomous
Colleges affiliated to this University (or) from the Colleges including Autonomous Colleges affiliated
to other Universities recognised by the UGC/AIU and accepted as equivalent thereto by the University
of Madras, seeking lateral admission to the Second Year / Third Year Undergraduate degree course
of study in the respective subject concerned shall be considered for lateral admission to the
Second Year/Third Year respectively in the same discipline provided that they should submit their
application form for admission together with original Transfer Certificate / Course Completion Certificate
wherein the actual duration of course undergone by them be appropriately indicated by the Institution/
University concerned, with request for exemption of papers relating to the subjects already passed
through their previous Institution/University, together with the original Statement of Marks of their
previous appearances and an authenticated relevant syllabus prescribed by the Institution/University
in original or the syllabus attested by the Principal/Head of the Department of the Institution in the
subject concerned where they have undergone their previous course for verification and to consider
for exemption of papers after perusal by the authorities of the University of Madras.

[B] COURSES OF STUDY

The Courses of Study for the B.A./B.Sc./B.Nat./B.Music/B.Com.[Co-operation,
Corporate Secretaryship] Degree shall consist of the following :

[a] FOUNDATION COURSES


[b] CORE COURSES [MAIN and ALLIED SUBJECTS]
[c] APPLICATION ORIENTED SUBJECT

FOUNDATION COURSES - [PART I and PART II]


The course of study for the FOUNDATION COURSES shall comprise the study of PART I - TAMIL or
an ‘ALTERNATIVE LANGUAGE SUBJECT for TAMIL’ [i.e.] anyone of the following MODERN INDIAN
LANGUAGES or CLASSICAL LANGUAGES or FOREIGN LANGUAGES or COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH at
the option of the candidates and PART II - ENGLISH, according to the syllabus and text-book prescribed
from time to time.

ALTERNATIVE LANGUAGE SUBJECT for PART I - TAMIL


[i] MODERN [Indian] LANGUAGES - Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam,
Hindi and Urdu
[ii] CLASSICAL LANGUAGES - Sanskrit and Arabic
[iii] FOREIGN LANGUAGE[S] - French only
[iv] COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH

Candidates admitted to B.A. / B.Sc. / B.Nat. / B.Com. [Co-operation, & Corporate Secretaryship]
Degree Courses should appear and pass the PART I - LANGUAGE TAMIL - PAPER - I or anyone of the
ALTERNATIVE LANGUAGE SUBJECT for TAMIL as indicated under [i], [ii], [iii], and [iv] above; and PART II -
ENGLISH PAPER - I in the FIRST YEAR; and LANGUAGE TAMIL - PAPER - II or anyone of the ALTERNATIVE
LANGUAGE SUBJECT for TAMIL, and ENGLISH PAPER - II in the SECOND YEAR under FOUNDATION
COURSE.

Candidates admitted to B.Music / B.Com. [Commerce], B.Com. [Bank Management],


B.Com. [Computer Applications] / B.B.A. / B.C.A. Degree Courses should appear and pass the
FOUNDATION COURSE - PART I - PAPER-I LANGUAGE TAMIL or anyone of the ALTERNATIVE LANGUAGE
SUBJECTS for TAMIL as indicated under [i], [ii], [iii], and [iv] above; and PART II - ENGLISH PAPER-II,
in the FIRST YEAR ONLY.

Note : For the above Languages, learning materials alone will be provided to the candidates. No Personal
Contact Classes [PCP] will be conducted. However, if sufficient number of candidates are enrolled,
Personal Contact Programme Classes shall be conducted.

The details of the Core Courses – Main Subjects, Allied Subjects, Application Oriented Subjects
and Elective Subjects are furnished under each course of study.

8. GENERAL INFORMATION
(A) ADMISSIONS
(1) Fee should be paid before the prescribed time. No extension of time for the payment of fee will be given
under any circumstances.
(2) All types of fees payable to the institute should be paid by Challan through the designated BANK (Challan
Enclosed). Postal Orders, Money Orders, Mail Transfers, Other Bank Challans and
Cash payments will not be accepted.
(3) Candidates are requested to write clearly their name and enrolment number on the Bank Challan. The Bank
Challan (IDE Copy) should be forwarded or presented to the Director, Institute of Distance Education,
University of Madras, Chepauk, Chennai - 600 005. Students admitted through the Study Centres / Spot
Admission Centres are advised to forward the Challan to the Study Centres / Spot Admission Centres for onward
transmission to the DIRECTOR, IDE for collecting the learning materials from the Study Centre /
Spot Admission Centre. Fee once remitted will not be refunded or adjusted in any manner under any circumstances.
(4) Prescribed text books are not supplied for all subjects to the candidates by the Institute of Distance Education.
Hence, they are advised to get them from the book-sellers. However, the syllabi and the learning materials will
be sent to the candidates.
(5) The learning materials will be supplied at the Personal Contact Programme Centres, Study Centres and
Spot Admission Centres. Those who are not able to collect the packages at the centre may request the
Director, IDE to despatch the learning materials by post.
The last dates for the receipt of the tuition fee, postage and stationery fee etc., are given below.

IMPORTANT INSTRUCTION
Students who want to discontinue their courses after the completion of first/second year should inform the
Director, IDE before the 31st May of every year. Otherwise full fees will be collected for the subsequent
years. Only after receiving the entire fees, his/her Course Completion Certificate will be issued.
Legal dispute, if any, relating to Admission / Examinations of IDE., will be subject to
Chennai Jurisdiction only.
Candidates who are visually challenged or with impairments of hands are advised not to apply for
B.Com. Computer Applications and B.C.A. Degree Course which involves operation of Computers.

PROCEDURE FOR ADMISSION


(1) All the courses of the Institute are offered to the residents of India and also to foreign countries as per the
discretion of the authorities, University of Madras. Admission cannot be claimed as a matter of right and the
Institute reserves to itself the right of admission.
(2) Spot Admission will be made for those who come to the Institute / Spot Admission Centres / Study Centres in
person along with the required original documents / certificates, in addition to a fee paid challan endorsed by
the designated BANK or a demand draft in favour of “The Director, IDE, University of Madras”, payable
at Chennai for Rs.100/- towards Registration Fee.
(3) All the columns in the application form should be filled in carefully. Incomplete application forms will be rejected.
(4) The xerox copy of the statement of marks of the qualifying examination accompanying the application form must
be attested by a Gazetted Officer and also by the Co-ordinator of the Spot Admission Centre / Study Centre
in the case of Spot Admission.

ORIGINAL CERTIFICATES TO BE ENCLOSED WITH
THE APPLICATION FORMS FOR ADMISSION
The following Original Certificates with two sets of attested xerox copies should be sent along with the application
forms for admission to the Undergraduate Courses.
(i) Transfer Certificate from the Head of the Institution where the applicant last studied.
(ii) Provisional or Pass Certificate (Diploma) of the qualifying examination. Candidates who have passed
the Higher Secondary Examination conducted by the Government of Tamil Nadu should enclose their
10th standard statement of marks also along with the Higher Secondary statement of marks.
(iii) Statement of Marks of the qualifying examination. Candidates who have passed their qualifying examination
from other Universities/State Boards must enclose with their Original Statement of Marks / Diploma / Pass /
Provisional Certificates of all the examinations passed right from the School Certificate Examinations along
with Course Certificate put in by him/her with their applications in order to satisfy whether they have passed
the qualifying examinations under the 10+2 or 11+1 pattern, as may be applicable.
(iv) If the certificates are in a language other than English/Tamil, an authenticated translation in English
should be sent along with the Originals duly attested by a Gazetted Officer. Failure to submit any one or
more of the above mentioned documents may entail rejection of their application.

All the Original Certificates mentioned above, whichever is applicable, should be sent or presented to the
Director, IDE. University of Madras, Chennai - 600 005 or presented to the Co-ordinator of the Spot Admission
Centres / Study Centres along with the application form for admission duly signed by the candidate with a Registration
fee paid Challan endorsed by the designated BANK or a demand draft in favour of “The Director, IDE, University
of Madras”, payable at Chennai. The Registration fee is Rs. 100/- for those applying for Degree course.
This amount is not refundable under any circumstances.
All the Original Certificates submitted by the candidates along with the application form for admission will be
returned after scrutiny. Candidates who do not get back their original certificates within a reasonable period of time
should report the matter to the Director, IDE. In the case of spot admission, the original certificates
(as mentioned above) will be returned on the spot after scrutiny together with provisional admission communication.
A Course Completion Certificate will be issued by the Institute after completion of the course OR on
discontinuance (in this case with the details of the year / years completed). The candidates are permitted to
take the examinations in which they have not passed even after the issue of the Course Completion Certificate.
All the original certificates should be attached at the left hand top corner of the application form with a tag or
string to prevent them from being lost. Candidates are advised to retain sufficient number of attested copies
of their original certificates before sending them to the Institute.
Candidates are advised to be accurate in their indication of their option in selecting the course, subject
and medium of instruction.
The filled-in application form along with the Registration fee paid challan endorsed by the designated BANK
and necessary ORIGINAL CERTIFICATES/DOCUMENTS should be sent to the Director, IDE., by Registered
Post with Acknowledgement due, or submitted in person at the Institute / Spot Admission Centres /
Study Centres for spot admission.
Candidates who have qualified from other State Boards/Universities/Bodies will be considered for admission
to the courses offered by the IDE, only on the condition that their previous qualifications are recognised by this
University. However, action will be taken to recognise the examination of a recognised Board/University, if the
syllabus of the qualifying examination is produced by the candidate along with the application form, exemption of
papers may be considered subject to the approval by the University authorities.

EXEMPTION AND CONTINUATION OF STUDY

Candidates who have already passed Foundation Courses or Part I/II subjects as a whole in the B.A./B.Sc.
Degree Examinations of the University of Madras and the Universities approved by the University Grants Commission
[UGC] and Association of Indian Universities [AIU] will be exempted from appearing for the Foundation Course
(Paper I or II) as the case may be subject to the approval by the University. Students who seek such exemption
should submit their requisition together with the following documents and fees :
(i) Original statement of marks in respect of the Foundation Courses or Part or Parts already passed by
them as a whole, along with authenticated syllabus prescribed by the Autonomous Colleges / other
Universities for scrutiny and to consider for exemption of papers by the authority of this University.
(ii) Two attested xerox copies of the above statement of marks.
(iii) Payment challan endorsed by the designated BANK for Rs.100/- towards exemption fee.
Students who have completed successfully the First / Second Year of studies in B.A. / B.Lit. / B.Sc. /
B.Music / B.Com. (General Commerce) / B.Com. (Bank Management) / B.Com. (Co-operation) /
B.Com. (Corporate Secretaryship) / B.Com. (Computer Applications) / B.B.A. / B.C.A., in the Colleges affiliated
to the University of Madras under the regulations in force from 1983-84, and the Colleges affiliated to other
Universities approved by the University Grants Commission [UGC] and Association of Indian Universities [AIU]
are considered for admission to the Second / Third Year of the Undergraduate Courses, in the same faculty, in this
Institute, subject to approval by the University authorities. These candidates should send along with their
application, First / Second Year statement of marks in original, and authenticated syllabus prescribed by
the Institution / University concerned.
Candidates who have discontinued B.A. / B.Lit. / B.Sc. / B. Music / B.Com.(General Commerce) /
B.Com. (Bank Management) / B.Com. (Co-operation) / B.Com. (Corporate Secretaryship) / B.Com. (Computer
Applications) B.B.A. / B.C.A. Degree Courses, after passing the papers prescribed for the First/Second Year
Courses, either under the old Non-Semester Pattern or under the Semester Pattern, in the Colleges affiliated to the
University of Madras and the Colleges affiliated to other Universities approved by the University Grants Commission
[UGC] and Association of Indian Universities [AIU] are considered for admission to the Second/Third Year of the
Undergraduate Courses in the same faculty concerned, under the current regulations, in this Institute, subject to
approval by the University authorities. They will not be eligible for classification. These candidates also
should send the required original documents mentioned above.
Orally and mentally challenged candidates admitted to the three year Undergraduate Degree Courses of this
University shall be exempted from the study and examinations of the Language [i.e.] either Tamil or any other
Language or English under the Foundation Courses and shall be declared qualified for the degree, if they pass the
other examinations prescribed for the degree.
Candidates who have passed the Diploma in Commercial Practice Examination conducted by the
State Board of Technical Education and Training, Government of Tamil Nadu are eligible for admission to the
Second Year of the B.Com. Degree course at this Institute.
Candidates holding ‘Diploma in Computer Science and Engineering [or] Electrical and Electronics Engineering
[or] Electronics and Communication Engineering Certificate’ [Three Year Course] of the Directorate of Technical
Education and Training, Chennai, Government of Tamil Nadu or any other Diploma as equivalent thereto, provided
that they satisfy the eligibility conditions prescribed in the regulations, are eligible for admission to the Second Year
B.C.A. Degree Course at this University.
Candidates who have successfully completed 10th Standard and Three Year Diploma Course in Music
recognised by the University of Madras are eligible for admission to Second Year B.Music Degree Course of this
University subject to the condition that they should appear and pass all the papers from First Year onwards as
prescribed in the regulations to successfully qualify for the B.Music Degree Course.

METHOD FOR PAYMENT OF FEE
Students can make their payments with the Banks designated by the Institute of Distance Education,
University of Madras without any additional charge. The challan has three identical parts, Viz. Bank Copy,
IDE Copy and Student Copy. The particulars required in the challan should be filled in by the Candidates without
leaving any columns blank. The BANK will retain Bank Copy, and return the IDE Copy and Student Copy to the
student. The IDE copy of the BANK Challan should be sent / submitted to the Director, IDE for official use. The
student copy should be preserved carefully by the student as a proof of payment. In places where there is no facility
for the payment of fees through the designated Banks, students may make the payment by means of Demand Draft
obtained from any of the Nationalized/Scheduled Bank drawn in favour of “The Director, IDE, University of
Madras” payable at Chennai.
The filled in application form should be sent or presented along with the IDE copy of the fee paid challan
endorsed by the designated BANK for the Registration Fee. This amount is not refundable under any circumstances.
The Tuition Fee and other fees for the First Year should be paid only after receiving the intimation letter of
provisional admission. For payment of subsequent tuition fees and other fees for second and third years,
no separate intimation will be sent to the candidates admitted. Hence, candidates are advised to retain
this Prospectus till the completion of the course for guidance and make remittances within the specified
due dates on their own. The enrolment of the defaulters will automatically stand cancelled. They may,
however, be readmitted to the same course on payment of Rs. 500/- subject to approval by the authorities.
Candidates are not permitted to remit the fees in instalments.
The students are strictly instructed to use separate BANK challans to pay the Tuition Fees and Examination
Fees and send or present them to the Director, IDE, in separate envelopes. The fee paid challan endorsed by the
designated BANK may also be presented to the Co-ordinator, Spot Admission Centre / Study Centre for onward
transmission to the Director, IDE. They are requested not to pay both examination and tuition fees together.
The Institute is not responsible for any delay in sending learning materials or statement of marks, etc.,
if the examination and tuition fees are paid together.

CHANGE OF COURSE (OR) MEDIUM


Candidates are advised to make a firm choice of the course of study they wish to pursue and the medium of
instruction before sending the application for admission. Normally, change of subject or medium of instruction will
not be allowed; but in special cases change may be permitted within one month from the date of admission on
payment of the prescribed fee of Rs.500/- subject to approval by the authorities.

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION
(1) The method of instruction is (a) mailing or distributing learning materials periodically to the students enrolled
and (b) personal contact programme. For each paper of study, a set of learning materials is given to the
students periodically. The learning materials can be collected by the students or his/her representative personally
from the Institute / Study Centres / Spot Admission Centres on production of the student’s copy of the
payment challan endorsed by the designated BANK. These learning materials will guide the students in effective
learning.
(2) For the students of B.Music, practical classes will be conducted in the Institute at Chennai. For B.C.A. and
B.Com. Computer Applications students, practical classes will be conducted at Ambur, Chennai, Coimbatore,
Madurai, Puducherry, Salem, Tiruchirapalli, Vellore and at all the Study Centres. Attendance for B.C.A. and
B.Com. Computer Applications theory and other practical classes is compulsory. B.Sc. Geography
students who do not secure attendance at the compulsory practical classes will not be permitted that
year for the practical examination. However, such candidates can appear for the practicals in the
subsequent years after fulfilling the attendance requirements. They will be charged a re-do fee for

their appearance and the details will be sent to the students on request. Students admitted to B.Com.
(Bank Management), B.Com. (Co-operation) courses will have to undergo practical training which involves
visits to industrial institutions. The Table gives the list of courses for which contact classes are conducted. It also
gives the duration, the nature (whether optional or compulsory) and details of centres. In courses where attendance
is made compulsory, if a student does not attend the compulsory contact programme, he/she is not eligible for
appearing for the University Examinations (Theory and Practical). If candidates appear for the University
Examinations (Theory and Practical) without adequate attendance in the compulsory personal contact programme,
they do it at their own risk and it leads to cancellation of their appearance in the Examinations.
(3) The Personal Contact Programme classes will be arranged for the benefit of the students in Tamil Nadu and
Puducherry and at the Study Centres in India. This programme is meant for classroom lectures on important
topics and clearing the doubts of the students. Students are advised to attend the classes in their own interest for
effective learning.
(4) The venue and dates of PCP Classes will be intimated separately.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS
All the communications and the learning materials in the case of those who opt to receive by post will be sent
to the candidates to the address given in the application form. Any change in the address should be intimated to the
Institute, Spot Admission Centres and the Study Centres immediately with the enrolment number. The candidates
are advised to make necessary arrangements in the post office for their mail to be redirected to their new address in
the event of a despatch being sent before the change is effected.

CONDONATION OF BREAK IN STUDIES


Candidates who have discontinued any course from Colleges or from this Institute and who seek admission in
this Institute in the Second/Third Year of the Course should pay a sum of Rs. 500/- or such fee as may be in force from
time to time towards condoning the break in study and for permission for rejoining the course. Candidates who
discontinued their undergraduate courses from other Universities and intending to join the IDE to continue their
studies should pay a sum of Rs. 750/- towards transfer fee in addition to the condonation fee.

IDENTITY CARD
The Identity Card will be issued after the First Year tuition fee is paid. The Identity Card will be valid till the
completion of the course. In the event of a student discontinuing a course, the card shall become invalid for the
year / years yet to be completed. Candidates are instructed to preserve their identity cards till the completion of their
course. They should note that the examination Hall Tickets will be issued by the Chief Superintendent of the Examination
Centres, only on production of the identity card. The arrear candidates can use the Identity Card for obtaining
Hall Tickets even after the duration of the course of study is over. If the original card is lost, a duplicate card will be
issued on payment of Rs. 100/- through the designated bank and the payment Challan endorsed by the designated
Bank is to be sent for this purpose together with a passport size photograph.

ENROLMENT NUMBER
Enrolment Numbers will be assigned to candidates on admission. The enrolment number will hold good for
the entire duration of the course of study. In communications addressed to the Institute, the enrolment number
should be stated. Letters received without the enrolment number will not be entertained.
The Enrolment Number is a twelve digit unique code (alpha-numeric). The first two digits indicate the year of
admission, the third, fourth and the fifth digits indicate the centre; the sixth, seventh and the eighth digits indicate the
subject and last four digits indicate the actual enrolment number.

ADDRESS SLIP
Applicants are required to furnish their address in each of the six slots provided for the purpose on a separate
sheet attached to the application form. The admission intimation, original certificates and learning materials will be
sent to the address furnished in the Address Slip only. Write the address in capital letters and use ball pen only.

SCHOLARSHIP
A) Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates who pursue their studies through this Institute are
eligible for reimbursement of fees. They are also eligible for an annual allowance of Rs.500/- towards
purchase of essential/prescribed books. The prescribed SC/ST scholarship form and other particulars in
this connection can be obtained from the SC/ST cell, Office of the Director, Institute of Distance Education,
University of Madras, Chepauk, Chennai - 600 005.
B) Visually or otherwise physically challenged candidates, can avail themselves of the State Government Scholarship
for the Disabled. The prescribed form may be obtained from the District Rehabilitation Officer in the districts
concerned for reimbursement of non-refundable fees.
C) The eligible SC/ST students are directed to submit the SC/ST scholarship form during their study at IDE only
and no SC/ST scholarship application form will be accepted after the period of study at IDE under any
circumstance.

FEE CONCESSION
The Institute of Distance Education (IDE), University of Madras offers fee concession to differentially abled
persons and prisoners subject to the following norms. :
(i) Differentially abled candidates with 75% physical disability will be considered for exemption from
tuition fee provided they submit a ‘Disability Certificate’ obtained from “The Director, Institute of
Physical Disability and Rehabilitation”, K.K. Nagar, Chennai.
(ii) Prisoners in Tamil Nadu are also be considered for exemption from tuition fee provided they submit
their application for admission with a ‘No Objection Certificate’ issued by the competent authority.
(iii) Women Students of the IDE., are eligible for 20% concession in tuition fee.
(iv) Graduates of the University of Madras pursuing a Postgraduate Course in the IDE., are eligible for
20% concession in tutition fee.
(v) Undergraduate students of the IDE., can do one additional Certificate Course (excepting French, German
and Sanskrit) for which tuition fee is waived.
(vi) Postgraduate students of the IDE., can do one additional Diploma Course (excepting French, German
and Sanskrit) for which tuition fee is waived.
(vii) Defence Service Personnel are eligible for 20% concession in tuition fee.
Candidates can avail themselves only one of the above concessions.

SPOT ADMISSION
1. Spot admission to the first year will be given to those who come to the Institute in person or at the
Spot Admission Centres and Study Centres along with the required original documents/certificates.
2. Eligible candidates who seek spot admission can collect their first year learning materials at the Spot Admission
Centres and Study Centres (including the Institute) by producing their copy of the payment Challan endorsed
by the designated Bank. For particulars of total fees to be paid (excluding Registration Fee), please refer
Page Nos. 27 & 28 Fee Particulars - Course-Wise.
3. The second year learning materials can also be collected by the students at the Spot Admission Centres including the
Institute and Study Centres on production of the student’s copy of payment challan endorsed by the designated Bank.

(B) EXAMINATIONS
1. Examinations for all the courses will be conducted by the University of Madras at the end of each academic
year/calendar year, the dates for which will be notified. Supplemental examinations will be held for the benefit of
candidates who failed in their attempt or those who did not appear.
2. The theory examinations for all the courses are conducted in various centres in Tamil Nadu and in Puducherry,
Bangalore, Cochin, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Port Blair and Thiruvananthapuram and at other
Study Centres, based on sufficient enrolment of candidates.
3. There will be two examinations on each day. Generally these examinations will be held as per Indian Standard
Time between 10.00 a.m. and 1.00 p.m. in the forenoon, and 2.00 p.m. and 5.00 p.m. in the afternoon. Candidates
who do not have any arrears will generally have only one examination on a given day.
4. Examinations will be held on all days including Sundays and festival holidays to enable the candidates who are
employed to minimise their days of leave.
5. The standard of examinations will be equivalent to the standard of examinations for regular college candidates.
6. Examinations will be held normally in the month of May-June and October-November each year. The Institute
may hold examinations during any other period as may be decided by the authorities.
7. Applications for examinations are normally to be submitted at the Institute two months in advance.
Applications for Examinations will be invited by advertisement in prominent dailies (news papers)
sufficiently in advance. Candidates are generally expected to watch for the advertisement published
in the newspapers and apply for the examinations before the date notified. Our Website
(www.unom.ac.in). will also carry the necessary information in this regard.
8. Candidates have to read carefully the Examination related Instructions before filling in the Examination Application.
Whenever candidates apply for Examinations, they have to pay Rs. 50/- (Cost of application Rs.25/- +
Statement of Marks Rs.25/-) in addition to the Examination Fee. Forms can be had from the Institute /
Spot Admission Centres/PCP Centres/Study Centres and downloaded from the Website (www.unom.ac.in)
9. Candidates are instructed to pay the tuition fees without fail before the last date and get the identity card from the
Institute. Without production of the Identity Card at the examination centre, they will neither be
issued the Hall Ticket nor permitted to appear for the examinations. If they appear for the examinations
without paying the tuition fees in time, and without getting the Identity Card, they do so at their own risk and
their appearance in the examination may be cancelled.
10. Candidates will be required to provide two copies of passport size photographs every time they apply
for examinations.
11. The medium of instruction will be in English and Tamil as specified in this prospectus against each course.
Candidates may indicate in the form of application for examination, the medium, i.e., English or Tamil, in which
they will write their examination irrespective of the medium of instruction in which they undergo the course.
12. The examination results of the candidates who have not paid the tuition fees and other fees within the due date
will be withheld/cancelled. Such candidates can get the results released only when they get a ‘No Due Certificate’
from the Director, IDE., after remitting the necessary fees due to the Institute and produce it to the Controller of
Examinations.
Passing Minimum
A candidate shall be declared to have passed the examination for each paper, wherever prescribed, if he/she
secures not less than 40% of the marks in the examination. He/she shall be declared to have qualified for the degree, if
he/she secures pass in all the papers prescribed as per the scheme of examinations. Candidates who do not obtain the
required minimum marks for a pass in paper(s) shall be required to appear and pass the same at a subsequent examinations.

CLASSIFICATION OF SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES
(1) B.A. / B.Sc. / B.Nat. / B.Com. (Co-operation) / B.Com. (Corporate Secretaryship)
(a) Foundation Courses
(i) Tamil / Alternative Language Subject
Successful candidates passing the examinations for the language papers and securing marks (i) 60 percent
and above and (ii) 50 percent and above but below 60 percent in the aggregate shall be declared to have passed the
examinations in the First and Second Class respectively. All other successful candidates shall be declared to have
passed the examination in the Third Class.

(ii) English
Successful candidates passing the examinations for English papers and securing the marks (i) 60 percent and
above and (ii) 50 percent and above but below 60 percent in the aggregate shall be declared to have passed the
examinations in the First and Second Class respectively. All other successful candidates shall be declared to have
passed the examination in the Third Class.

(b) Core Courses and Application Oriented Subjects


Successful candidates passing the examinations for Core Courses (Main and Allied) and Application Oriented
Subject together and securing marks (i) 60 percent and above and (ii) 50 percent and above but below 60 percent
in the aggregate of the marks prescribed for core courses and application oriented subjects together shall be declared
to have passed the examinations in the First and Second Class respectively. All other successful candidates shall be
declared to have passed the examinations in the Third Class.
Candidates who obtain 75 percent of the marks and above in any subject shall be deemed to have passed in
that subject with distinction provided they pass the examinations at the first appearance.

(2) B.Com.
Classification of successful candidates in B.Com. Degree Course is to be made separately for the two groups,
Foundation Courses consisting of two papers and the other 13 papers. (Core, Allied and Elective Subjects).
Successful candidates passing all the examinations prescribed for the course and securing the marks
(i) 60 percent and above (ii) 50 percent but below 60 percent in the aggregate shall be declared to have passed the
examinations, in the First and Second Class respectively. All other successful candidates shall be declared to have
passed the examinations in the Third Class.
Candidates who obtain 75 percent of the marks and above in any subject shall be deemed to have passed in
that subject with distinction provided they pass the examinations at the first appearance.

(3) B.Lit.
Successful candidates passing all the examinations prescribed for the course and securing marks (i) 60 percent
and above (ii) 50 percent and above, but below 60 percent in the aggregate shall be declared to have passed the
examinations in the First and Second Class respectively. All other successful candidates shall be declared to have
passed the examinations in the Third Class.
Candidates who obtain 75 percent and above marks in any subject shall be deemed to have passed in that
subject with distinction provided they pass the examination at the first appearance.

(4) B.B.A.

Passing Minimum, Classification, etc., are the same as prescribed for other undergraduate degree courses.

(5) B.Music, B.Com. (Bank Management), B.Com. (Computer Applications) and B.C.A.
A candidate shall be declared to have passed in each paper, if he/she secures not less than 40% of the marks
prescribed for the examination. In the case of subjects involving practicals, the candidates shall be required to obtain
not less than 40% of marks in Theory and Practical separately for declaring him/her to have passed the examination
in that paper. For the B.Com. (Computer Applications) and B.C.A. Courses, classification of successful candidates
is to be made separately for the two groups, Foundation Course consisting of two papers and the other papers
consisting of Core, Allied (Application Oriented Subject in the case of B.Music), including practicals.

The detailed scheme and conditions regarding Project Work / Practicals, etc., will be mentioned in the
Syllabus which will be sent later to the candidates admitted to B.Com.(Bank Management), B.Com.(Cooperation)
Courses.

PROVISIONAL CERTIFICATE AND DEGREE


The Provisional Certificate will be issued to those who have qualified for the degree after the publication of
results. For obtaining the Provisional Certificate and Degree/Diploma, a Fee of Rs.300/- or such fees as
may be in force from time to time, should be paid along with the Final Year Examination Fee.

The prescribed forms for obtaining the Provisional Certificates and Degrees/Diplomas are available with
the Institute, and at the Spot Admission Centres / P.C.P. Centres/Study Centres and can also be downloaded from
the Website (www.unom.ac.in / www.ideunom.ac.in).

ARREAR CANDIDATES
Students with arrear papers, after the completion of the duration of the course of study, have to seek and
obtain on their own initiative, with a requisition letter and a self-addressed envelope, the particulars of change of
syllabus, provision for completion of course, practical classes, practical examinations, Examination Application
forms, from the Director, IDE., University of Madras. The coordinators of the PCP Centres/Spot Admission Centres/
Information Centres/Study Centres may also provide the available particulars. In their correspondence with the
Institute, the arrear candidates should write the Enrolment Number and address without fail.

9. PERSONAL CONTACT PROGRAMME
Students are instructed to note the following

1. Students are advised to make their own arrangement for Boarding and Lodging.

2. Students are advised to bring their own Note-books, Pens, Pencils, etc.

3. Students from other States may attend Classes at any one of the nearest PCP Centres.

4. The Co-ordinator / Additional Co-ordinator at the respective Centres will be available for any clarification
regarding the course.

5. Detailed Time-Table for PCP Classes will be made available at the PCP Centres on the first day of the
PCP Classes.

6. Any change in the programme will be intimated to the students at the venue of the PCP Classes.

7. PCP Classes will be held from 9.00 a.m. to 12.45 p.m. & 1.30 p.m. to 5.15 p.m.

8. Students should not use Cell Phones in the class rooms.

9. Students are advised to collect their study materials from the PCP Centres / Study Centres by submitting their
tuition fee remittance challan (designated Bank).

10. Students are instructed to keep their identity card ready to be produced for any reference.

PAYMENT OF FEES
Students are advised to avail themselves of the facility offered by the BANKS designated
by the Institute of Distance Education University of Madras, spread all over INDIA for
payment of fees relating to remittance of Registration fee, Tuition fee, Examination fee
and other fees as applicable without any additional charges. A challan in triplicate is
appended to the Prospectus for the purpose of remittance of fees. The challan is also
available in all the designated BANK branches. In places where there is no
designated BANK, the students may make the payment by means of DEMAND DRAFT
obtained from any Nationalised / Schedule Bank drawn in favour of “THE DIRECTOR,
IDE, UNIVERSITY OF MADRAS” payable at Chennai.

14. ADMISSION TO CERTIFICATE & DIPLOMA COURSES

INFORMATION TO CANDIDATES
Along with the course selected, if an applicant wishes to join any one of the Certificate or
Diploma Courses simultaneously, he/she should obtain separate Prospectus prescribed for the
Certificate/Diploma Courses on payment of Rs. 100/- in person or Rs. 150/- by post towards the
cost of Application and Prospectus and to submit the application together with bonafide certificate
of the Institution where he/she is studying the Under-Graduate Degree Course.

ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS
(A) CERTIFICATE COURSES
CERTIFICATE
a) Candidates undergoing any Degree Course (Regular Stream) of the University of Madras or
any other University recognised by UGC/AIU accepted as equivalent thereto by this University
are eligible for admission to the Certificate Courses other than Sanskrit, French & German.

b) Candidates who have passed any Degree Course (Regular Stream / Open University System)
of the University of Madras or any other University recognised by UGC/AIU accepted as
equivalent thereto by this University are eligible for admission to the Certificate Courses in
Sanskrit, French & German.

c) A student can additionally enrol for one Certificate Course only at a time.

(B) DIPLOMA COURSES


DIPLOMA
a) Candidates undergoing any Post-Graduate Degree Course (Regular Stream) of the University
of Madras or any other University recognised by UGC/AIU accepted as equivalent thereto by
this University are eligible for admission to the Diploma Courses other than Sanskrit, French
& German.

b) Candidates who have passed any Degree Course (Regular Stream / Open University System)
and Certificate Course in Sanskrit, French & German of the University of Madras or any other
University recognised by UGC/AIU accepted as equivalent thereto by this University are eligible
for admission to the Diploma Courses in Sanskrit, French & German. Graduates who have
done French, German as a second language in the First Year and Second Year of the Degree
Course/Certificate from Alliance Franchaise/Max Muller Bhavan are also eligible for admission
to the respective Diploma Courses.

c) Candidates who have passed +2 Examinations conducted by the Government of


Tamil Nadu (or) Senior School Certificate Examinations conducted by the CBSE (or)
Government Board Examinations of the Other States (or) Union Territories (or) an Examination
as equivalent thereof by the authorities, University of Madras are eligible for admission to the
“Diploma Course in Rain Water Harvesting” only.

d) A student can additionally enrol for one Diploma Course only at a time.
