EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCE
UNIT 1: The Earth and Earth Subsystems

TOPIC/LESSON NAME Earth and Earth Systems

CONTENT STANDARD The learners demonstrate the understanding of the subsystems (geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and
biosphere) that make up the Earth.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS The learners will show their understanding by writing an essay on how man has altered the atmosphere, biosphere,
hydrosphere, lithosphere, and consequently, the Earth System as whole.
The learners:
LEARNING COMPETENCIES  recognize the uniqueness of Earth, being the only planet in the solar system;
 explain that the Earth consists of four (4) subsystems, across whose boundaries matter and energy flow;
 show the contributions of personalities/people on the understanding of the earth systems, and;
 identify the layers of layers of the Earth (crust, mantle, and core).
At the end of this module, I can:
SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES  define the concept of a system;
 recognize the Earth as a system composed of subsystems;
 differentiate the Earth’s subsystems and describe how each other is related to one another, and;
 identify Earth’s internal structure.
TIME ALLOMENT June 18,20-21,24-25 to July 2,4, 2019 (7 hours)

At the end of this module, I can: Encourage student’s participation.
 define the concept of a system;
 recognize the Earth as a system composed of subsystems;
 differentiate the Earth’s subsystems and describe how each other is related to one another, and;
 identify Earth’s internal structure.
MOTIVATION Guide Questions:
The teacher will play a video entitled “The Subsystems of the Earth”. What are the interconnections manifested in the
video?

INSTRUCTION/DELIVERY Teacher’s Tip:

Brainstorming/Socialized Discussion Let the students participate in the interactive
discussion.
1. What are the characteristics of a system?
2. Explain that the Earth system is essentially a closed system. It receives energy from the sun and
returns some of this energy to space.
3. Introduce the term atmosphere.
The atmosphere is the thin gaseous layer that envelopes the lithosphere.
The present atmosphere is composed of 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, 0.9% Argon, and trace
amount of other gases.
One of the most important processes by which the heat on the Earth’s surface is disturbed is
through atmospheric circulation.
There is also a constant exchange of heat and moisture between the atmosphere and the
hydrosphere through the hydrologic cycle.
4. Introduce the term lithosphere.
The lithosphere includes the rocks of the crust and mantle, the metallic liquid outer core, and the
solid metallic inner core.
Briefly discuss the Plate Tectonics as an important process shaping the surface of the Earth. The
primary driving mechanism is the Earth’s internal heat, such as that in mantle convection.
5. Introduce the term hydrosphere.
About 70% of the Earth is covered with liquid water (hydrosphere) and much of it is in the form of
ocean water.
Only 3% of Earth’s water is fresh: 2/3 are in the form of ice, and the remaining 1/3 is present in
streams, lakes, and groundwaters.
The oceans are important sinks for CO2 through direct exchange with the atmosphere and indirectly
through the weathering rocks.
Heat is absorbed and distributed on the surface of the Earth through ocean circulation.
6. Introduce the term biosphere.
The biosphere is the set of all life forms on Earth.
It covers all ecosystems- from the soil to the rainforest, from mangroves to coral reefs, and from the
plankton rich ocean surfaces to the deep sea.
For most of the life on Earth, the base food chain compromises photosynthetic organisms. During
photosynthesis, CO2 is sequestered from the atmosphere, while oxygen is released as a byproduct.
The biosphere is CO2 sink, and therefore, an important part of the carbon cycle.
sunlight is necessary to life.
7. Introduce the internal structure of the Earth.

PRACTICE
By means of a concept map (using Venn diagram) explain the interconnectedness of the Earth’s subsystems.
EVALUATION Teacher’s Tip:
Write an essay not exceeding 200 words on how man has altered the atmosphere, biosphere, lithosphere, and Present and discuss the rubrics.
therefore, the Earth System as whole. Suggest practical ways on how to alleviate or prevent these alterations.
