Emilio Aguinaldo: A Traitor or a Hero?

Emilio Aguinaldo has a tarnished reputation. Even up to todays

generation, he is infamous for being involved in the conspicuous execution of
Andres Bonifacio. Moreover, he is also proven to be involved in the cheating of
the snap election in the Tejeros convention with the exchange of letters with
Emilio Jacinto as proof. In addition to that, those mentioned physical letters of
them are now displayed in a museum after an auction. So, despite those
treacherous things aforementioned, is Emilio Aguinaldo a traitor or a hero?
I believe he is both. To further elucidate, I believe he became a traitor in order to
do a heroic thing in his own way. The treacherous things he did was only a
means to an end that he wanted to achieve and he wanted to give to the country
for the betterment of the Filipino people. The only problem is, he executed that
act of means, poorly and horridly.
I believe he cheated in the election, and everybody else actually followed (even
some of which are Andres Bonifacio’s allies) because deep inside they know that
he will not be able to manage the government properly, he lacked the education,
skill and knowledge for it, and if ever he was the one who got elected, he
would’ve had probably easily become a puppet for somebody else or would
have had been eaten alive by the educated Ilustrados of that time (rhetorically
speaking).
Yes, what he did was wrong, but it resulted to a properly working government
for 4 years, an army that was properly managed and trained, and independence
to the Spanish colonial rule. What he did to gain authority and leadership
through cheating was wrong, treacherous, villainous, evil, and made him a
traitor, but he only did that because he knew the reality that you cannot gain
independence through appeal to emotion and brawns or violence alone. You also
need education and government tactic, which Bonifacio lacked.
In conclusion, I believe that Aguinaldo is both a hero and a traitor, and despite
the treacherous thing he did, he still showed his heroism and love for our
country in his own way.
