Technical Evaluation

1) As per your understanding, what is a geocell system?

It is a confinement system filled with some specific material, which distributes loads and prevents
movements of infill.

2) Do you think there should be a correlation between the polymeric type the geocell is made of, to its
performance? Give a short explanation.

Yes, distinct types of geocell are used for different purposes (short term or long term use) and
have different performances.

Different types of polymeric geocells influence in properties such as creep resistance, cell
strength, elastic stiffness.

3) In general, if you need to choose only one parameter of a material in your design (not only geocell),
will you choose Strength or Stiffness (elastic and plastic modulus)? Give a short explanation.

Stiffness, to maintain its stability and geometry, in order to keep the infill confined.

4) In your opinion, what are the main differences between a geogrid/geotextile (2-D) and geocell (3-D)
geosynthetics in a pavement structure?

The confinement system, that prevents movement and erosion and provides stability.

5) The geocell system is a:

a. Chemical stabilizer
b. Mechanical stabilizer
c. Polymeric stabilizer

6) The design challenge is:

a. Only better performance
b. Better performance, lower cost
c. Lower cost

7) What is the main design objective of any road structure (with/without geocells)?

To have correct geometry project, support loads efficiently without failing.

8) How do you think the geocell may improve the road pavement structure?

Providing a longer life span and maintenance cycles, reduction of thickness, better performance in
heavy loads.

9) What is Creep (‫?)זחילה‬

Permanent deformation, caused by a constant stress in a long period of time.

10) If the geocell will deform with time, will that effect its performance, and how?

Yes, if geocell elongates more than 3% it will lose its geometry and the structure will fail.

11) What are the main design objectives of any retaining wall?

Stability of earth in order to prevent movements, unstable slopes.

The Neoloy geocell system provides a stiffer reinforced layer in a pavement road design.

Re-design the conventional pavement with PRS-Neoloy Geocell according to the Objectives below.

Input:

A conventional road pavement structure:

Layer #
1 200 mm Granular
2 200 mm Granular
3 200 mm Granular
4 Native subgrade

There's a 20 kN single wheel load on top of Layer #1 with a contact tire pressure of 560 kPa. Consider a circular
contact tire area.

The stress distribution angle for the conventional unreinforced material is ~20⁰ and for Neoloy Geocell- 45⁰.

The maximum allowable stress the subgrade can hold is: 60 kPa.

Objectives:

1) Calculate the applied vertical stress on the subgrade in the conventional pavement, with no change in
layer thickness
2) Define the ideal location (specific layer) in the pavement for the Neoloy Geocell reinforcement to best
reduce the vertical settlements on the surface (no calculations).
3) Following Item #2, calculate the applied vertical stress on the subgrade with no layer thickness change.
4) Minimize pavement granular thickness as much as possible with PRS-Neoloy Geocell.

* Prepare an Excel Sheet that calculates the stress distribution.

* Prepare and AutoCAD cross-section drawing of the proposed PRS-Neoloy Geocell structure.
