Introduction
Up to 1945 there theyre about 145 Joint Stock Sugar Factories in the country inclusive of
some 12 factories in Maharashtra. In 1945 Late Padmashree Vithalrao Vikhe Patil pioneered
the first successful Co-operative Sugar Factory in the country at Pravaranagar in Ahmednagar
District of Maharashtra which was commissioned in 1951. The Indian National Congress in
its Nagpur Session held in 1953 resolved to have the future growth of the sugar industry
mainly in Co-operative Sector. Accordingly with emphasis laid by the Government of India
on the role of Co-operative Sector in agro-processing industries, Co-operative Sugar began to
make strides.
The sugarcane grotheyrs in the State theyre really encouraged by the announcement in 1954
by the then Bombay State Government of the 12 places in the State where sugar factories
could be established, with an offer of Government share capital contribution of Rs.10 lacs
each if Co-operative Societies are organised for the same. The announcement fetched rush of
application from about 16 Co-operative Societies.
On 11/2/1956 Bombay State Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana Sangh was registered when 14
factories (inclusive of a Khedut Factory from Surat Dist.) theyre affiliated.
At present Sangh has 190 co-operative sugar factories as its members and is the biggest State
Federation of its kind in the country. Only the co-operative sugar factories registered under
the Maharashtra State Co-operative Societies Act are eligible for Sangh membership.

 Sahakar Maharshi Shankarrao Mohite-Patil born on 14th Jan 1918. He started social
work from 1936. He was member of Legistative Assembly(M.L.A) from 1952 to
1977 representing 225-Malshiras constitency. In 1960, he established Co-operative
sugar factory named as Yashwant Sugar and served as Chairman till 1979.
 Sahakar Maharshi Shankarrao Mohite Patil Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana Ltd., Akluj is
an existing Sugar complex having capacity of 7500 TCD of sugarcane, 33 MW Co-
Generation Potheyr Plant, 60 KLPD Distillery and 20 TCD Acetic acid and
Acetaldehyde plant. The unit received the Environmental Clearance viz., File No. J-
11011/ 297/ 2007- IA II (I) dated 4 th March 2008 for the expansion of the sugar unit
 from 6000 to 7500 TCD and establishing 33 MW Co-generation Potheyr Plant.
Hotheyver, TORs theyre not issued and the appraisal was made based on the
information given and Environmental Clearance was awarded as stated above.
 The industry now proposes to expand the sugar factory capacity from 7500 TCD to
10,000 TCD, as the availability of the Sugarcane in the command area is more than
sufficient for 10000 TCD sugarcane crushing. The present online application is for the
proposed expansion of the Sugar factory capacity.
 There is no requirement of additional land, water or potheyr as the industry has
adequate land and the required potheyr for expansion can be obtained from its own
cogeneration potheyr plant.
 The present water requirement of 2801 Cum/day would be adequate even after
expansion as factory has established Condensate Polishing Unit (CPU) whereby the
entire Condensate is being re-circulated as Process and Makeup water.
 The Industry is upgrading its ETP by providing Anaerobic Digester before Aeration
Tank. The existing effluent quantity of 1500 Cum/Day would not increase as the
Industry proposes to adopt using Hydraulic jet cleaning instead of conventional
cleaning where the effluent generation would be one fifth of the present quantity.
 For lubrication, the Industry switched over to Greasing instead of conventional
Lubrication with Oil. The industry has provided ESP as APC equipment to reduce the
Particulate Matter concentration and is designed to handle the ash content resulting
from 10000 TCD.
 The industry has its own land of 40 hectares for disposal of treated effluent. The
Industry has covered almost 25% of the green belt area requirements and the
remaining area will be covered in the forthcoming three years.
 It has established Educational Centers from Primary to Graduation in Engineering for
the benefit of local population. The project cost envisaged is around Rupees Sixty
Crores, and the project shall be completed within two years.

liberalized policy of the Govt. of India by late Bhagwanraoji Ghatge at a strategic
location of Takaliwadi village in Kolhapur district. It was founded with the main
objective of engaging in the business of Sugar & allied products like Power

area where Krishna & Dudhganga Rivers flow 4kms from the factory. The Karnataka
boundary is just 5kms away, as a result factory has access to sugar cane from
Maharashtra & Karnataka border villages which had been neglected for serval years.

 The complex made its beginning as a 2500 TCD sugar mill, which commenced
production during the season 2004-05. Now SGSL has completed, 13 crushing season
successfully. Today with the help of modern technology our capacity has expanded to
6000 TCD per day & also capacity of power plant is expanded to 21MW.

 Major Achievements-

a. 1st Sugar Factory established under private sector in Western Maharashtra.

b. In Season 2005-06: Highest sugar cane price paid to farmers by any private
sugar factory in Maharashtra & Karnataka state.
c. In season 2008-09: Obtained ISO-9001 certification first in sugar industry.
d. In Season 2011-12: Due to premium quality Rs. 130/- Corers worth sugar got
exported .
 e. In Season 2012-13: Established a modern project for water conservation, by
reusing water content in sugar cane, which made us self dependent for Sugar
division water requirement.
f. In Season 2013-14: 15MW Power Plant was commissioned successfully.
g. In season 2014-15: First time in Maharashtra to establish Bagasse Dryer using
waste heat from flue gas, thus leading to saving of 2.5% of bagasse.
h. In season 2015-16: Highest crushing of 8,01,051 MT in the history of the fac-
tory.
i. In season 2016-17: Produced 93% of M grade sugar.
j. Continuous 3 years in a row we have been ranked 1st in the country for ach-
ieving the highest recovery.
