SLAM POETRY
Poetry written to be performed in front of a live audience began with the Beat Poets in the 1960s and was
usually accompanied by Jazz music. This tradition, associated with (white) misfits and/or academics who
criticized mediocracy and complacency, was democratized by slam poetry competitions which were more
inclusive and primarily focused on social issues and injustices. In addition to music, visual aids are also
used when performing slam poetry. In many aspects, slam poetry overlaps with hip-hop and the difference
between the two is not always easily discernible.

speaking of a literal jury: sometimes people won’t believe you regardless of what kind of a person you actually are.
