1- The cable reels should be set up in their final position onjacks or a suitable reel vehicle
equipped with a braking device to provide sufficient tensiona smoothpayoff and prevent
overrunmng.
2- Prior to the start of cable pulling, all hardwareto be used for the pull, including the rigging,
should be carefully inspected.Any damagedcomponentsshould be replacedwith
undamageditems of equivalent strength.
3- Lagging and other protective should be carefully removed from the reel when the reel is in
its final position. The pulling line should then be attachedto the pulling eye.
4- A thorough visual inspection for flaws, beaksand abrasionsof the exterior of the cable
should be made as the cablesare pulled from the reels. If an apparentdefect is noted,
pulling operationsshould be stoppedand a determinationmade as to whether repairs are
required before cable pulling is resumed.
6- The entire path that the cable will follow during pulling should be checkedto ensurethat
the cable will ride free and clear of all obstructions, sharpedges,or projections which
might causejamming or damagedduring installation. In checking the path, allowance must
be made for the position that the cable will take when it is under tension and when it is
allowed to go slack.
7-Soil or any materials must be piled back from the edgeof the trough/trench at least 600mm
to confirm to work saferegulations.
8- 10cm thick soft soil/sand (sand bedding) is laid in the trough /trench and then leveled
before directly pulling the cable (the soft sandbeddingibackfilling shall be free from rocks
or other hard object and shall be meetthe DEW A Requirements).the trench/trough must be
reasonablydry.
9- The installation and handling of the cablesnear the cable drum and throughoutthe cable
route shall be done at all times by adequatestaff suitably trained and supplied with all
necessaryplant, equipmen
10-Install cable rollers at equal distancethroughout the cable route at as per DEW A
requirement. put corner roller at bending location in order to avoid any direct touch
with trough/trenchwalls. All rollers used shall be in serviceablecondition moving
easily on their spindle and with rolling surfacesfree from damage.
11-Use proper communication betweenthe cable drum, the cable pulling supervisorsand
pulling winch is necessaryso proper harmony shall be maintained betweenthe
supervisorsat different position of the cable route. Radio or telephonetransmissionis
usual method, and the equipmentused should be of proven reliability and should be
thoroughly testedbefore pulling begins.
12-Cable drum must be handled with care. When lifting the drum with a crane, use a shaft
through the centerof the drum and axle or spreaderbeamto avoid lateral pressureon
.flanges.
13- All burrs and obstruction in ducts of conduits should be cleared by pulling a mandrel
closely approximating the inside diameterof the duct through the structure, followed by
a wire brush and swabto clean and remove foreign matter from the duct. Smooth, burr-
free duct surfacesare important in preventing abrasionand cutting damageto the cable
jacket during pulling.
14-For cable pulling inside the duct and tunnels the necessarycable rollers and man power
will be set. It is advisableto use funnel shapedend at the cable entranceto avoid cable
friction and abrasionwith pipe end. A suitable lubricant should be used.
16-The maximum allowable pulling tension and sidewall bearing pressurespecified by the
Engineer should not be exceeded.During the cable installation, the tension recording
device and the stresson pulling equipmentshould be continuously monitored. If any
excessivestressesdevelop, the pulling operation should be stoppedat once and the
sourceof the difficulty identified. Pulling should not resumeuntil engineerhas
reviewed the problem.
17-For cable pulls that are expectedto be near the design limits for the cable or where
pulling tension datais required, a direct reading dynamometeror load or arrangement
with a direct readoutshould be used. Tensionmeasuringdevices should have a means
~,~. -"'-- .uous monitoring of the pulling tension as function of the length of cable
,&~'~;) pulleQ.~ ensionmeasuring equipmentshould be calibrated as directed by the
~.,# ~;1'ineer.1 continuous measurementof pulling length is also recommended.

IS-As the cable is pulled, rapid fluctuations in the tension called "surging" may occur. These
fluctuations should be controlled by using a pulling line with minimum stretch
characteristics and careful control of the pulling speed.
19- Whenever a crossing is made of an existing pipe or cable, such pipe or cable shall be
securely supported during the progress of the work.
20- Upon completion of each cable pull, proper cable end seals must be installed to prevent
entrance of moisture.
21- With the necessary cable rollers and man power the cable pulling inside the GIS basement
will be done. In all cable pulling process, minimum bending radius should not be exceeded.
And for temporary supporting the cable inside GIS basement only sand bags or any other
.suitable soft material shall be used.
22- Backfilling sand shall be free from Stones, rocks and shall be carefully placed in the
trench/tough to avoid any damage to the cable or joint.
23- Carefully cut the cable by setting the necessary loop and leaving enough cable length for
termination preparation.
24- The pulling tension will be calculated and the careful measure will be taken to pull the
cable under the nominal values
25- The cable pulling shall be started after obtaining the permissions from Clients and
Contractors Engineer.
26- DC sheath test shall be carryout for cable Drum before starting pulling or after backfilling
cables or before joint installation and any test report without witnessing by DEW A &
Manufacturer (Riyadh cables) is not acceptable.
27 -The contractor and sub-contractor must apply all DEW A new check list & Manufacturer
requirements for cable installing.
