CORROSION RESISTANCE

Itisveryimportanttoavoidcorrosioninspringapplicationssoasnottoimpairspring
properties.Sandvik9RU10isanausteniticstainlesssteelandhassufficientcorrosion
resistanceinmostspringapplications.Thecorrosionresistanceisalmostthesameas
ASTM304and,comparedtootherlowalloyedspringsteels,Sandvik9RU10has
superiorperformance.However,allausteniticsteelsofthistypearesusceptibletostress

HEAT TREATMENT

Sandvik9RU10isaprecipitationhardenablesteeland,comparedtostandardaustenitic
stainlessspringsteelse.g.typeAISI301,hasamorepronouncedtempering(ageing)
effect.Consequently,itcanbesuppliedwithacomparativelylowtensilestrengthin
ordertoprovidegoodformingproperties,butstillreachahightensilestrengthafter
forming,byasimpleheattreatment.Temperingalsoimprovesfatigueandrelaxation
resistanceand,furthermore,itwilldecreasetheinternalstressespresentinthespring
afterforming.
Formaximumincreaseinmechanicalstrength,temperingofSandvik9RU10shouldbe
carriedoutat480C(900F)for1hour.Itwillgiveasignificantincreaseinstrengthfor

initialtensilestrengthsaboveapproximately1300MPa(189ksi).Thisincreasecanbe

Becauseofitshighstructuralstabilityintheprecipitationhardenedcondition,thegood
springpropertiesarealsoretainedatelevatedtemperatures,uptoabout350C(662F).
Toavoiddiscolouration,partsshouldbecarefullycleanedbeforeheattreatment.
Temperinginopenairfurnacesgivesaharmlessbrownishoxideonthesurface.
WELDING

Sandvik9RU10,likemostausteniticstainlesssteels,hasgoodweldability.Welding,
however,introducesexcessheatintothematerialclosesttotheweldthatbreaksdown
thestructureformedbycoldworking.Asaconsequence,thiswilldecreasethe
mechanicalpropertiesoftheweldedarea.Thelowestpracticalheatinput,<1,0kJ/mm,

andinterpasstemperatureformultipasswelding,<100C(210 F),isrecommended.
Inmostcases,theTIG(GTAW)methodispreferable.Itcanbeusedeitherautogenously
(withoutfillermetal)orwithfillermetal.Inbothcases,pureargon(99,99%)shouldbe
usedasashieldinggas.
Whenfillermetalisused,Sandvik19.9.LorSandvik19.9.LSiisrecommended.Note
thattheweldmetalwillnotbeabletoprecipitationhardeninthiscase.
DuetothehighcarboncontentofSandvik9RU10,thereisalsoariskofcarbide
precipitationatthegrainboundariesofthematerialintheheataffectedzone(HAZ),
whichmaydecreasethecorrosionresistanceofthematerialincertainenvironments.
