Sync a Flash Drive with a Windows Folder

What you will learn in this tutorial:


You will learn to how to sync a flash drive and a folder on your computer using Microsoft SyncToy. When you press Sync, new files, updates, renames, and deletions on made on either side are made to the other side. After synchronization, the contents of the folder and the flash drive will be identical.

Perquisites:
You should have MicrosoftSync Toy installed. You may download Sync Toy free of charge directly from Microsoft. MICROSOFT SYNCTOY: DOWNLOAD: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=15155 INSTRUCTIONS: [LINK to install guide]

You should also have a USB flash drive. Note: The capacity of the flash driver should be greater than the size of the folder.

Instructions
1. Press the Start Button and click All Programs. Click on SyncToy2.1.

2. Click on Create New Folder Pair.

3. Under Left Folder, click browse and select the folder on your computer that you would like to sync to. Common selected folders and locations: Desktop Desktop

My Documents Libraries -> Documents-> My Documents Mapped Network Drive Computer->[Mapped Drive] NOTE: All subfolders will be synchronized. However, you may choose to exclude certain folders later in the setup process. 4. Under Right Folder, click browse, click on Computer, and then select the flash drive you would like to sync to.

5. Click Next.

6. Verify that Synchronize is selected, and click Next.

7. Give a name for your folder pair and click Finish.

OPTIONAL: Exclude certain folders from syncing:


You may wish to not sync certain subfolders on either your computer or your flash drive. To exclude specific subfolders: 1. Select your folder pair on the left hand side.

2. Click Change options. 3. Click Select subfolder. 4. All folders are selected to sync by default. You can uncheck the box next to a folder to exclude it from syncing. NOTE: You may only exclude folders, not individual files. If you wish to exclude individual files, you should create a new folder, and then exclude that folder.

Item will sync. Item will NOT sync.

5. Click OK, then click OK again.

TESTING
To prevent the possibility of accidentally deleting data, you should perform a test before your first sync.

1. Select your folder pair on the left side. 2. Click Preview. A simulation will then run. This may take some time depending on the size of your folders.

3. After simulation, the program will display the results. Verify that no unwanted file modifications or deletions occurred. NOTE: If unwanted modifications occurred, you should resolve them before continuing. 4. Click Close. 5. Exit out of the program.

Performing a Sync
Note: If you have yet not completed your first sync, you should run a simulation to preview the results. See TESTING. 1. Click the start menuAll ProgramsSyncToy 2.1. 2. Select the folder pair you wish to sync on the left side of the program. 3. Click Run. This may take some time depending on the size of your folders.

4. After completion, verify results and exit the program.
