APUSH 14 September 2015 Take Home SAQ a.) Briefly explain the policy of mercantilism Mercantilism was an idea that was in Europe because they had belief of profitable trading and commercialism. This idea was an economic ideology and most states liked this policy. This policy forbade the colonies from trading with other people. All goods must be transported by the British ships and the manufactured goods goes back to North America. Bullionism which is an economic theory that states wealth is how much precious metal one owns is an early form of mercantilism. b.) Briefly explain how the restriction in the passage quoted above is consistent with the policy of mercantilism The restrictions placed on the goods in the passage quoted above is consistent with the policy of mercantilism because the passage states that the goods should go back to the motherland and be manufactured and brought back to the New World. This is equivalent to the policy of mercantilism because mercantilism forbade the colonies from trading with other countries and also forbade goods to be carried on other ships. One example of good is gold and silver and this was banned from exportation even for payments for the manufactured goods. c.) Briefly explain the negative impact of the policy of mercantilism on the American colonies. The negative impact of mercantilism on the American colonies is that the political freedom and economic freedom was taken away from them. This caused the American colonies to become weak economically and the people living in the colonies became very demoralized. Also, the colonies didnt know how to manufacture the goods by themselves and was highly dependent on the Europe. Also the manufactured goods were sold at higher prices when they came back to North America because Europeans countries put taxes on the manufactured goods.
