MESH was the topic of Director Caroline Baillie’s keynote yesterday at the AAEE meeting in New Zealand.
🌍 Engineering Education Shaping the World: Australasian Association for Engineering Education (AAEE) Conference 🌍 The AAEE 2024 Conference, co-hosted by Ara Institute of Canterbury and Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury, is underway in Christchurch, New Zealand. This premier event brings together educators, researchers, and industry leaders to explore the evolving role of engineering in addressing global challenges. A key highlight of this year’s conference is the focus on the updated Graduate Attribute: "The Engineer and the World", adopted by the International Engineering Alliance (IEA). This attribute emphasizes the engineer’s role in creating solutions that are sustainable, inclusive, and impactful on a global scale. It aligns with the broader commitment of professional bodies like Engineers Australia and Engineering New Zealand Te Ao Rangahau to advance these critical themes within engineering education and practice. Today’s keynote by Professor Caroline Baillie from the University of San Diego showcased her pioneering work through the MESH program (Master of Engineering in Sustainability and Health), illustrating how engineers can integrate public health and sustainability to drive global progress. Associate Professor Enda Crossin also provided insights on how the Graduate Attributes framework empowers engineers to embrace diversity, sustainability, and global responsibility. These updates represent a significant shift in preparing engineers not only for technical challenges but also for their roles as ethical and adaptable leaders in a changing world. In opening, I had the privilege to reflect with gratitude on the exceptional audience and think about the intersection of sustainability, equality, responsible technology use, and its impact. These global megatrends are shaping the way we think about engineering education and its transformative potential to meet societal and environmental imperatives. Thank you to the organizers, reviewers, and participants for creating an engaging and impactful event. #AAEE2024 #EngineeringEducation #TheEngineerAndTheWorld #IEA #GraduateAttributes #Sustainability #GlobalImpact UC Engineering

New edition of MESH Director Caroline Baillie ‘s coauthored book : ‘Engineering our future: an Australian guide’ just out!
So happy with fifth edition of our textbook ‘Engineering Your Future: an Australasian guide’, Prof. David Dowling and Prof. Roger Hadgraft. Sure has come a long way from our early dreams and schemes shaping first edition in 2009. It's been an absolute pleasure to work with the publishing team at John Wiley & Sons, and recent editions have benefited hugely from contributions by Prof. Timothy McCarthy, Prof. Sally Male, Prof. Caroline Baillie, Prof. Doug Hargreaves AM The text covers professional ethics, design, teamwork, sustainability, communication and more, and has been purchased by over 27,000 undergraduate engineers across the previous four editions. It is a real honour to contribute in this way to the education of Australia's next generation of engineers. #australianengineering #engineering #engineers (Photo credit: Tayla Field)

Read what Randika Jayasinghe, (MESH Director Caroline Baillie’s former PHD student and spotlight expert for MESH ) has to say this week about the role of informal workers and the UN Global Plastics Treaty.
Plastic and Waste Specialist - UNSW Centre for Sustainable Development Reform | Circular Economy Specialist | Lecturer & Researcher
In just days, hopefully history will be made in Busan, South Korea, as nations gather for the final negotiations of the UN Global Plastics Treaty. In our latest expert insight, we shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes of the waste economy: waste workers. Their story is at the heart of creating a just transition in the global fight against plastic pollution. We explore how making the invisible visible can transform our approach to waste management and environmental justice. #plasticwaste #INC5 #plastictreaty #wasteworkers

Writing or editing a book is a labour of love. I do not take on new projects lightly, but when Ron Barnett asked me if I'd like to contribute to his wonderful book series, 'Debating Higher Education: Philosophical Perspectives' , I found myself tempted. After a 30+ year career questioning the basis of engineering education, here was an opportunity to share reflections on what I feel are serious areas in need of development within our profession. Coincidentally I was at that time planning our MESH program: Masters in Engineering, Sustainability and Health with Paul I. K.. We teamed up to take on the book project and shared many of the lessons learnt through creating a truly transdisciplinary program. We asked authors from a range of disciplines, sectors and countries to consider the question: what do engineers need to know about and think about if they work towards justice, sustainability and health? Today we launched our book, let's hope it makes an impact. We certainly need it. https://lnkd.in/ev_M9CyQ
