The National Academies are seeking nominations for experts to participate in a new consensus study to review and evaluate the survey and data standards of the Marine Recreational Information Program (MRIP). The committee will evaluate the effectiveness and applicability of the MRIP standards for key data uses, considering a few exemplar domains and sectors; identify the alignment of the MRIP Standards to best practices in federal agencies and the survey profession more generally; and assess the adequacy of the MRIP Standards for meeting OMB Standards and Guidelines for Statistical Surveys. Over the past two decades, wildfires in western North America have greatly increased in frequency, magnitude and severity. Scientists have documented three main causes— a century of suppression and inadequate forest management, climate change, and the spread of urbanization. These viruses reduce yields, shorten vineyard lifespans, and impact wine flavor—sometimes taking years to show their full effects.    Our latest report reviews the current state of knowledge around these diseases, identifies knowledge gaps, and proposes actions that could help reduce the spread and economic impact of these diseases. Atypical weather events, such as extreme tropical cyclones, pose significant threats to communities both in the U.S. and globally. Despite advancements in forecasting, effectively communicating these risks remains a challenge—and an opportunity for innovation. In early 2024, we hosted a workshop focused on risk communication for extreme weather events. Participants explored the nuances of communicating uncertainty, understanding diverse audience needs, and the critical role of preparedness.
