The recent completion of Plant Vogtle, the largest nuclear energy plant in the United States, has sparked new opportunities for building next-generation light water reactors to produce reliable, clean energy. However, significant barriers remain to nuclear deployment, including technical challenges, regulatory hurdles, and investment risks that complicate decision-making timelines. Join The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine online or in person in Washington, D.C. for a workshop on January 29-30, 2025 to explore pathways for new nuclear development in the United States. The workshop will facilitate in-depth discussions among policymakers, regulators, community leaders, and technical experts regarding the challenges of deploying more nuclear power, including ways to improve construction, financing, decision-making, public engagement, education and training, and regulatory efficiency. Over the past two decades, wildfires in western North America have greatly increased in frequency, magnitude and severity. Scientists have documented three main causes - a century of suppression and inadequate forest management, climate change, and the spread of urbanization. Less well known are the environmental and social implications associated with the acceleration of these trends. This new resource from NASEM Social and Behavioral Sciences summarizes a workshop that explored the history, current state, and anticipated future of wildfire science and policy across the western United States and Canada. Most of our everyday products, from toiletries and cleaning supplies to plastic packaging and pharmaceuticals are derived from fossil carbon sources. We hosted a Climate Conversation about how we can rethink how our everyday products can be made using methods that reduce emissions and support a sustainable future. Learn more from Craig Bettenhausen, Zara Summers and Jenny Yang as they explore the topic. https://lnkd.in/ePKhWyhp #SustainableDevelopment #CarbonFootprint #GreenInnovation #SustainableFuture #EcoFriendlyProducts #ClimateConversation #ReduceEmissions #SustainableLiving

We spoke with Xavier Cortada about how he's using art to facilitate real community engagement and a meaningful dialogue about the climate crisis and the solutions that can be implemented. The exhibit "Climate Science Art" takes the observer through Cortada’s learned experience of climate change. It's on display at the NAS building through the end of December in Washington D.C.. Cortada hopes his art “inspires you to reframe the way you see or connect with something, so that you can think differently, you can talk differently, and you can act differently.” Learn more: https://ow.ly/N3Tu50UqFLp #ArtForChange #ClimateArt #CommunityEngagement #NASBuilding #WashingtonDCArt #SustainableArt #ClimateScienceArt #XavierCortada #DCArtExhibit #ArtAndClimate #ArtInWashington

Communities, all across the country, are feeling the impacts of climate disasters on every aspect of their lives, and housing is no different. “Housing is critical infrastructure, and we haven't treated it as such,” noted Tracy Kijewski-Correa, one of the panelists in a recent Climate Conversation. The conversation covered this and so much more about the impacts of compounding disasters on our housing stock, as well as opportunities to strengthen the resilience of our homes and communities.
