🌍 Support Indigenous Youth & Women Leaders at COP29! As the global community gathers for COP29 in a few days to come, to address the climate crisis, Indigenous youth and women have an essential role to play. These voices, especially from communities on the frontlines of climate change, bring crucial perspectives and lived experiences that shape effective, just climate solutions. This year, Spring of the ASAL we’re raising funds to send a delegation of 10 Indigenous youth and women to COP29, where they can contribute directly to global climate dialogues. Their participation and we’ve made arrangements to ensure they meaningfully engage including in negotiations, side events, speaking roles, action days & film screening. This is vital in; • Amplifying voices from the communities most impacted by climate change • Advocating for climate justice and sustainable solutions • Bringing actionable insights and solutions from Indigenous practices We are however challenged due to the lack of funding risking our efforts of ensuring inclusion in this especially critical COP! 🚍 Chiva Ka’tikunsi: Connecting COP16 to the territories! In Part 3 of this series, we highlight the gathering of youth across multiple communities at the indigenous reserves of Betania. These young leaders are engaging in critical dialogue, sharing their perspectives, and ensuring their voices shape the future of their territories. Their active participation in global events like #COP16 plays a key role in driving sustainable development within their communities. To safeguard our territories and biodiversity, we must honor the wisdom of past generations while empowering the voices of today and tomorrow. As the #ChivaKaTikunsi continues its journey, we remain committed to ensuring youth representation at decision-making tables. #COP29 has ended and left many of us with unresolved questions. As we turn our focus to #COP30, we hope that 2025 will be a year that catalyses commitment and real progress for our #people and #planet, to put us on the right trajectory to accelerate #climateaction. See my blog below for some reflections on how #philanthropy can step up with purpose and impact at this critical time.

Today, we are delighted to give to World Leaders in Baku a letter from the Women Leading on Climate network, which I co-founded with Catherine McKenna, that sends a clear message that COP29 must be a catalyst for course correction.  The letter has been signed by 81 leaders from business and civil society, from 21 countries, and calls on governments to: ✔️ Deliver 1.5 aligned national climate plans (NDCs)  ✔️ Accelerate action to triple renewables, double energy efficiency and ultimately phase out fossil fuels- and Halt and reverse deforestation  ✔️ Mobilize catalytic public climate finance to attract private investment, especially in the Global South. With the latest UNEP report showing that we are on our way to a 3º C world and the impacts of climate change disproportionately affecting women and girls, I don’t think Governments have a choice but to unite and deliver on these priorities.  Yesterday, we also launched a global #WomenLeadingOnClimate social media campaign to rally the voices of women activists worldwide - including Vanessa Nakate, Sophia Kianni, Nathalie Kelley, Arizona Muse, Aditi Mayer, Temilade Olanrewaju, Tori Tsui, Laurel Kivuyo, Mitzi Jonelle Tan, Priscila Tapajowara and Farwiza Farhan - to share their stories of climate action and demand that leaders step up and act. Women, rooted in family and community, understand the stark realities of climate risks firsthand. They will need to be equipped with the skills to navigate the urgent and complex solutions we need.  Later today, we'll be welcoming women leaders including Sherry Madera of CDP, Jacqueline Novogratz of Acumen, Shameela Soobramoney (She/Her) of National Business Initiative, Sophia Suganuma of Climate Cardinals and Kerry Constabile of Amazon to the We Mean Business Coalition Pavilion here at COP29 for a flagship event focusing on how we harness women’s leadership for transformational climate action. Research shows that women are twice as likely to speak out and engage their community on the issue of climate. Knowing that there is a strong network of women activists, negotiators, policymakers and business leaders working together and speaking up in unison gives me great courage.  Together, we can push for a future that brings us back on track for 1.5°C. We are BEYOND excited to announce our delegation of Minnesota leaders who will attend #COP29 in Baku this November! On November 11th - 22nd, our majority BIPOC delegation of climate activists, educators, and students from Minnesota will head to Baku, Azerbaijan for the United Nations climate conference, COP29. Our Window into COP29 program sends delegates to communicate what they see at the United Nation's Conference of Parties from their lens of expertise, whether that be Indigenous rights, climate change education, or youth voices in power. We’re on a mission to make international climate policy accessible to all through our program. "What's needed goes beyond a simple call-out. We need a massive culture change.” On the ground at #ClimateWeekNYC, “intergenerational collaboration” became a catchphrase. Yet we met with despairing youth activists burnt out of energy, time and resources. It left us questioning how intergenerational collaboration could be touted as a solution without material support to make it happen. Now COP29 is here, it's time companies put their money where their mouth is and fund young people! Here’s what we learnt in NYC: We asked 27 young people* whether they were remunerated for the events they contributed to as speakers, organisers and facilitators. Only 1 of the 27 respondents reported that all the events they contributed to were remunerated. Most people reported that their attendance at Climate Week was self-funded, relied on mutual aid, fundraising or required family support. Over half paid between $1000-3000 to attend. This movement wouldn’t exist without the courage and commitment of young people. That's why we need equal access to these spaces and that can start with funding. So, here’s our call to action: - If you're a funder or have access to funding, please reach out to [email protected]. We're already getting requests from young people who need funding to attend COP29. - If you're a young person in need of funding, comment on this post and funders please contact them directly! Today, I stand with the women around the world who are raising their voices for climate action. Women are at the forefront of climate leadership, with many serving as my mentors and inspiration. Women lead over 60% of global grassroots climate movements, and their increased representation in parliaments is linked to stronger climate policies and lower carbon emissions. They are also essential in local adaptation and resilience-building efforts. Yet, the reality remains stark: 80% of those displaced by climate change globally are women, and 70% of the world’s poor are female. As #COP29 begins, I join #WomenLeadingOnClimate in calling for a stronger voice for women in climate negotiations. Let’s ensure that those most impacted are also central in shaping solutions.
