A major food trend in 2024 you are a part of. Globally, consumers have become increasingly interested in what they eat, especially the ingredients used to make their favorite food products. This might be because of the advent of fake food products and food adulteration. If you've been following me for a while now, you'll see that most of my posts emphasize checking labels on food products to know what you're buying. You eat every day, and what you eat impacts every area of your life. Food and beverage companies have noted consumer interest in food ingredients, so there has been more transparency about the ingredients used in their products. Our Food System Our family has been lucky enough to travel to Europe a few times over the last few years. When we go, we eat pasta, bread, and any grains without any stomach issues. In the States, we have been gluten-free (when possible) for almost 10 years because our bodies can’t process it. I had no clue why, but I am starting to learn the reasons. A month ago, on some social media site, I saw a picture of a beach in the 1950s with a quote something like, “What do you notice about the picture?” I didn’t really notice anything, so I clicked below to read the comments section. Turns out everyone was thin in the picture, and they were. It then goes on to talk about the why, it's our highly processed, sugar-laden food. Over the next few days, my feed was then filled with other articles and continued to pick up information. A few days later, I started a quest to cut out as much added sugar from our diet as possible. Two weeks ago, I listened to RFK Jr.’s speeches on our food supply, and that opened my eyes even more. After doing some additional research, I have realized that our food supply and how we eat are broken. Now I know that many chemicals in our food supply are banned in Europe, including Round-Up in our wheat. Hence, the reason I can’t eat grains in the US, but I can in Europe. It’s the start of the journey and requires a lot of planning/cooking but we eat 95% fresh foods, pasture-raised meats, nuts, olive oil, and even a glass of red wine most nights. I feel better and have lost 10 lbs without doing any additional physical activity over the last few weeks. I have read or listened to podcasts from the following people so far, Dr. Steven Gundry, Dr Mark Hyman, Max Lugavere, and Dr Casey Means to start the journey. What is eating seasonally? Eating seasonally means consuming foods that are naturally in harvest during a particular time of year. Eating locally refers to consuming food that can be grown within the UK. Natural and caloric sweeteners soar as US consumers seek clear health guidance, flags survey. 🍯 A recent survey on low and no-calorie sweeteners (LNCS) revealed that one-third of consumers adjusted their consumption habits between April 2023 and April 2024. Within this group, 10% reported an increase in LNCS usage, and 6% indicated they had recently started using them. Despite this shift, U.S. consumers continue to show a strong preference for caloric sweeteners, with honey and brown sugar being the most popular choices. The survey, conducted by the International Food Information Council (IFIC), aimed to assess consumer perceptions and preferences regarding sweeteners in food and beverage applications.
