📈 Rising Costs for NYC Animal Care Centers: A Growing Concern 🐾 Recent reports highlight a significant budgetary challenge for Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC). The organization, responsible for sheltering and caring for the city's stray and abandoned animals, has seen its budget nearly double in recent years. This increase, driven by rising operational costs and higher demand for services, underscores the need for sustainable funding solutions to ensure the well-being of both the animals and the dedicated staff working tirelessly on their behalf. With the ACC's budget ballooning to over $80 million annually, there is a growing urgency for city officials and stakeholders to address the financial strain and explore innovative approaches to managing and funding animal welfare programs. Balancing fiscal responsibility with compassionate care will be crucial as the city continues to navigate these challenges. 2/3 of BC households have pets as family members. Help support initiatives to: priorities: 🐾House people and pets together 🐾 Put food on everyone’s plate 🐾 Keep us all safe in emergencies 🐾 Proactively protect farmed animals 🐾 Reunite families and ensure traceability with microchips for pets 🐾 Use a One Health / One Welfare lens to evaluate policy decisions
🐾Two-thirds of B.C. households include pets as important and loved family members. But pet-friendly housing is hard to find and often more expensive, especially for vulnerable people who already face housing barriers. “The BC SPCA is seeing an increase in people needing to surrender their pets because of a lack of pet-friendly housing options. Many families all over the province are being forced to rehome their pets to keep or find a place to live” explains Kahlee Demers, BC SPCA Community Animal Centre Manager. The 2024 provincial election is your chance to tell B.C.’s political parties and election candidates that you want them to take action for animal welfare. Amazing news! DARTCC has received our 2nd consecutive #grant from The Irving and Phyllis Millstein Foundation for Animal Welfare. This Animal-Centered Philanthropy® bestowed a generous $75,000 grant in 2023 and a $40,000 grant this year. This additional grant will help us to continue developing the Emergency Animal Shelter platform (EASApp) in several crucial ways, delivering the following to volunteers and teams: -- An easy-to-understand mobile solution to streamline the care of animals at a disaster shelter. -- A central platform to manage volunteer and team profiles, memorandums of understanding, and shelter data. -- A platform to train, test, and deploy an emergency shelter for animals and document their care. -- Detailed reports and data exports for local, state, and federal requirements “We are deeply grateful for this second grant. The continued support will help us launch EASApp this fall and demonstrates the tool’s potential value for others.” -- Deb Shelby, founder of DARTCC The Foundation has our most heartfelt and deepest gratitude. #innovation #technology #Animals #AnimalShelter #funding #grantfunding #nonprofitorganization #disasterpreparedness #disasterpreparedness #DisasterRelief #Disaster #disasteremergencies #climatechange #climatechangeisreal #animalwelfare

As a passionate advocate for animal welfare, I believe it's crucial to spread awareness about the importance of cat neutering. 🔹 Overpopulation Control: One unspayed female cat and her offspring can produce hundreds of kittens in just a few years, contributing to overpopulation issues in communities and shelters. 🔹 Health Benefits: Neutering not only prevents unwanted litters but also reduces the risk of certain reproductive cancers and infections, leading to longer, healthier lives for our feline friends. 🔹 Behavioral Improvement: Neutered cats are often less likely to exhibit mating-related behaviors such as spraying, yowling, and roaming, making them better companions for both indoor and outdoor living. 🔹 Community Impact: By neutering our cats, we can play a proactive role in managing the cat population in our neighborhoods and reducing the strain on animal shelters and rescue organizations. Let's work together to create a brighter future for cats everywhere! Spread the word, support local TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) initiatives, and consider neutering your own cats to make a positive impact on their lives and the community. 🌍🐾 #CatNeutering #AnimalWelfare #SpayAndNeuter #CommunityImpact #TNR

The Elmina B. Sewall Foundation seeks to create a healthier and more equitable Maine, where all people, animals, and environment thrive. The Foundation’s Animal Welfare Grants provide support to animal shelters throughout Maine, primarily through one-year operating support grants of $15,000 to $40,000 per year. Support is also provided for efforts working at the intersection of social services and animal well-being, including service and therapy animal programs, social service or other community organization-based programs that support animals to stay with their families and out of shelters (e.g. pet food pantries), programs that support families and animals together in times of crisis (temporary sheltering for animals and people facing domestic violence or other disasters), and those that otherwise address social justice issues as they pertain to animals. (Support for cat population control is provided to organizations which the Foundation has supported for cat population work in the past three years.) Call 516.410.4895, or email [email protected] for a free fee quote to have us write your entire proposal, or edit your draft, for a reasonable flat fee. https://lnkd.in/e4N7xbhy Bev Browning Holly Rustick

My recent column: Overcrowded and Overwhelmed: Fallout of Niagara SPCA's No-Kill Policy Niagara County's municipal animal shelters are overwhelmed. With the Niagara SPCA ending contracts to accept animals from local control officers, shelters are overcrowded, especially with hard-to-adopt breeds like Pit Bulls. While "No-Kill" policies are well-intentioned, they may not be sustainable for municipal shelters responsible for public safety and animal welfare. It's a tough conversation, but re-evaluating these policies might be necessary to prevent overpopulation and ensure the well-being of both animals and our communities. #AnimalWelfare #MunicipalShelters #NoKillPolicy #NiagaraCounty

Ever Heard of Maternity Leave for Donkeys? Yes, you read that right! In Kenya, donkeys—often the unsung heroes of rural life—are getting a well-deserved break. For the first time, a maternity leave initiative for these hardworking animals is giving them time to rest and care for their newborns. This unique approach to animal welfare is changing lives—both for the donkeys and the people who depend on them. Curious how it works?
