➡️ New insights on dog training in B.C. | Recent research from UBC and the BC SPCA analyzed information from public websites of 281 dog training businesses in B.C. The findings are promising: 72% of dog training businesses in B.C. use reward-based training methods, which are scientifically proven to be more effective and better for animal welfare than aversive techniques. The study also highlights a key challenge: 31% of businesses did not list trainer credentials. This means dog guardians need to be careful and check trainers' qualifications and the methods they use. This research sets a benchmark for measuring progress in the dog training sector and supports BC SPCA's advocacy work for animal welfare. The British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - Speaking for Animals
About us
The BC SPCA was established over 120 years ago and we continue to grow stronger every year. We are a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in British Columbia. Today we have 44 locations throughout BC providing a wide range of services and programs to help more than 45,000 animals in distress and in need each year. The BC SPCA was created under the auspices of the provincial Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and is the only animal welfare organization in B.C. which has the authority to enforce laws relating to animal cruelty and to prepare cases for Crown Counsel for the prosecution of individuals who inflict suffering on animals. 🐘📣Breaking News: CELEBRATE A WIN FOR ANIMALS! The federal Senate has just approved Bill S-15 to ban the breeding, import, export, and circus-style performances for elephants and great apes in Canada. But there is still more work to be done! The Bill must be approved by the House of Commons to become law, and we hope that federal MPs will show their commitment to animal welfare by doing so in the new year. Want to help make life better for animals? When little Marley arrived, his cries of pain told us how much he was suffering. Struck by a car and left with a severely injured back end, his life changed in an instant. His dedicated medical team quickly started him on regular pain medication to keep him as comfortable as possible while they took x-rays to assess the damage. Given the injuries Marley suffered, a special surgery is necessary to repair his painful hip and give Marley the best chance at healing successfully. Our friends at Petsecure Pet Health Insurance* have generously offered to match all medical donations up to $3,500 to help with Marley’s care and other animals who need urgent medical help. Share your kindness with Marley today and your caring gift will have double the impact: https://lnkd.in/d3XQUHxw * This grant was made by the Definity Insurance Foundation @definityfdn at the recommendation of the Definity Insurance Company Petline Insurance Company.

Today marks the three-year anniversary of the Prime Minister’s mandate letter to the Minister of Agriculture to ban the live export of horses for slaughter. Bill C-355 to ban live horse export has passed the House of Commons, but remains stalled in the Senate. Horses have been suffering for far too long. If you have not already done so, please send a letter to the Senate requesting immediate support of this Bill! Link: https://ow.ly/VCK150UqUIC

Matching gift for animals in need! BREAKING NEWS: Right now, BC SPCA staff are working to bring in up to 30 cats and kittens from a single property. So far eight are already in care, but these sweet bundles are part of an ongoing story. We don’t know exactly how it will end, but one thing is for sure, they need your loving kindness right now. With this many animals, there’s a lot of work to be done. If you care for a pet or two in your own home, you know the work and cost it takes to keep them clean, fed, healthy and happy. Imagine multiplying that by 20 or 30! It will be a big job, but the team is committed to giving these cats and their adorable babies the best chance at a brighter future. This #GivingTuesday, an anonymous animal-lover and the Eldon & Anne Foote Fund at Edmonton Community Foundation have agreed to double every gift up to $100,000. Your caring contribution today could have 2x the impact! Read the full story and share your love: https://ow.ly/IUCa50Uk4zC
