For this deterrence to be efficient, dual-use technologies as well as defensive and offensive capabilities are required." Apart from any kind of moral question about ESG or not, dual-use technologies are simply a built-in feature of VC backed investments. Otherwise it's difficult for startups to achieve scale required to deliver VC returns. So dual-use plays a clear role in co-opting technologies into defense that can achieve scale in a market larger than just defense, and therefore drive down costs for defense-specific applications and accelerate innovation. At the same time, this is not a trade-off decision. We need dual-use for its part, and we will still need a certain number of advanced platforms and technology that only the military can use. "First the Truth. Then the dream." This became the refrain of a major political alliance ("Truthers") rebelling against the incumbent presidency (of the "Dreamers") in the dystopian novel 2054. And for what it's worth, the novel is very much as pithy as the refrain when it comes to illustrating the most pressing geopolitical issues facing our world today in the guise of fiction. In this second installment of a trilogy, the world grapples with the race and consequences of the Singularity, a hypothetical point in future - in this case 2054 - where technological growth becomes uncontrollable and irreversible. What form could the Singularity take? What are the technologies that contribute to the Singularity? Is the Singularity universally desirable across all nation states? I would recommend this (and the first book in the series, 2034 for a deeper dive into cybersecurity and nuclear fallout) to anyone who would like plausible answers to these questions. Sifted spoke to us about defense investing and the categorization of dual-use vs. defensive vs. offensive. In our view the discussion around “dual-use” is unhelpful and does not align with the ethical standards by which it is motivated. At Tholus Capital we believe that superior military technology is the most credible deterrent to war. For this deterrence to be efficient, dual-use technologies as well as defensive and offensive capabilities are required. We therefore invest across the full spectrum of these categories. In line with the requirements of some of our investors we do, however, offer distinct investment strategies that are limited to “dual-use” technologies or defensive weapons.   We are currently witnessing a discussion and review of applicable investment limitations and ESG standards across institutional investors. Given the current threats, we believe that it is also likely that regulators will weigh into the debate to clarify that investment in defense can in fact be ESG compliant.
