The Water Resilient Dundee (WRD) partnership, led by Scottish Water and Dundee City Council, is leading the way in how Dundee can manage its water systems sustainably to meet the challenges of climate change head-on 🌍. With Scotland facing increasing flood risks 🌧️ and the potential for sea levels to rise by 1-2 meters 🌊 over the next century, the WRD partnership is reimagining how we manage water in urban environments, focusing on: • 💡 Innovative drainage strategies • 🌿 Protecting the natural environment • 🛡️ Creating flood-resilient communities • 📈 Delivering wider social, economic, and environmental benefits Read more about how this partnership is creating a more climate change resilient Dundee for generations to come 🌱 👇 https://lnkd.in/e6grS7GQ #SustainableDundee #ClimateAction #WaterResilientDundee #UrbanPlanning #WeLoveDundee

🤝 More and more Scottish cities are developing an integrated approach to water management through Local Authorities working with Scottish Water. 💰 Neither have adequate resources to address the challenge but working together they can get more from the resources they do have.

The towns and cities that are relatively safer from the consequences of climate change need to start building A LOT more housing for all the people who will be forced to leave their homes in the years and decades ahead. Density, affordability, sustainability, and speed are all crucial here. The time to start is now.

We are at the forefront of investigating and researching the impacts of climate change on our built heritage, as well as developing the knowledge, skills and materials Scotland needs to look after it for future generations. We can also use this expertise to improve the nation’s existing buildings, making them as warm and efficient as possible. In this piece for Holyrood Communications, our Director of Cultural Assets, Dr David Mitchell, outlines why #HeritageMatters to #NetZero. https://ow.ly/JHPi50TUt4V

What will Victoria's houses - and the climate - look like in fifty years? Most homes in Victoria were built before energy efficiency standards were introduced. We need to ensure that new builds will withstand the weather of the future, and address the divide between those who can afford to live in efficient, healthy, comfortable homes and those who can’t Take a look at our new article, "Building for the Future": https://lnkd.in/gD52Ak4j

Valuable study from Australia for culturally relevant and informed climate adaptation! “Climate-readiness does not mean reinforcing inadequate technical solutions that shut us in, or barely remedial solutions. These reduce us to what philosopher Georgio Agamben termed a “bare life”, a condition that precludes the possibility of a good one. That need not be so. Our research is trialling adaptive practices, drawing on local knowledge of cool spaces (both natural and built), and sharing these practices across cultures. It shows we can reimagine climate-readiness as part of a flourishing community.” #climateaction #coolingcities Elizabeth Babcock Gil CisnerosClimate Action, Sustainability and Resiliency - City and County of Denver
When homes already hit 40°C inside, it’s better to draw on residents’ local know-how than plan for climate change from above

Five years, nine months and eleven days. We don’t have time to waste. Great to be at The Aotearoa Circle’s annual hui in Parliament and hear Minister of #ClimateChange Simon Watts reiterate the urgency of #ClimateAction and the Government’s commitment to meeting our #climate targets, with only 60-odd months left until 2030. Co-incidentally at pretty much the same time across the other side of Pōneke, delegates at the #2WalkAndCycle conference were listening to Janette Sadik-Khan, Salvador Rueda, Christchurch City Councillor Sara Templeton, former Auckland Councillor Pippa Coom, and Wellington Deputy Mayor Laurie Foon talk to their experiences of driving #transformation in one of the most critical areas of opportunity in our #decarbonisation and #resilience-building arsenal: #transport. With the clock ticking, we need to pull all levers, but particularly focus on those solutions that are already present and proven. Solutions that can be delivered at minimal cost with maximum benefit, not just to climate, but to #health, #wellbeing, #community-shaping, and #resilience-building. #Collaboration will be key. Within sectors, between sectors, through the public and private sector, and critically, across #government.

What happens when cities are affected by extreme weather events? This week, Kiarne Treacy sits down with Co-Chief Heat Officers, and Co-Directors of the City of Melbourne's Climate Change and City Resilience Branch; Tiffany Crawford and Krista Milne to ask some big questions. The pair share some surprising statistics around just how much of the city’s emissions stem from the buildings themselves and why we can’t develop our way out of this, we need to adapt. Krista and Tiffany share the innovative nature-based solutions that are already available, the challenges of having the right infrastructure in place to support them and the necessity of retrofitting the city with more nature - it’s a big job! We need to reconstruct our cities and rethink the way we view them. As Krista says, we should think of them as a city within a forest, rather than a city with trees. This episode is NOT to be missed.
