✨ Our webinar ‘Researcher careers across borders’ took place this morning, with fantastic speakers Johanna Stadlbauer, Teresa Rosas, PhD, Xavier Eekhout Chicharro and Jo Bowler. 🌍Johanna, from the University of Graz, outlined what is best, and not best, to do when presenting researchers with career options outside of academia, including the need to be sensitive about how hard researchers have worked to make themselves employable within academia. 🌍 Teresa, from CREAF, outlined the lessons learned in supporting researchers’ career transitions, and the importance of mindset shifts for researchers in how to approach their careers. 🌍 Jo, from Developing Business-Aware Academics, emphasised the work they are doing to help businesses, non-profits and policy organisations to realise the full potential of the UK’s research and innovation talent. She especially stressed the need for researchers to turn their ideas into action. 🌍 Xavier shared the work being done in Europe by EURAXESS to develop researcher careers, focusing on three crucial areas of talent attraction, relocation and professional development of researchers. 👏 Thank you to all who attended the webinar and for sharing your comments and resources in the event chat – the engagement was fantastic and of great value. 🏆 👀 If you enjoyed today, you may be interested to learn more about our new peer learning for researcher developers across Europe scheme. There is a significant underestimation of postdocs' capabilities when transitioning into professional careers. A persistent misconception holds that the postdoc phase is merely an extension of training, to be constantly replaced by new recruits. Coupled with the looming retirement of baby boomers in Germany , this view fails to recognize that highly skilled professionals, particularly those operating or utilizing large research facilities, are not easily replaced. This talent drain has become a key factor in limiting the EU's economic growth to just 8% over the past 15 years, while the US has grown by 85%, according to IMF data. A guiding example is X-ray based operando study domain that has failed to excite industry so far and is not achieving its potential even after two decades of pioneering development. To address this, research leadership must rethink the role of postdocs by integrating them more fully into decision-making and opening leadership pipelines for them. Organizations should focus on retaining and empowering these skilled professionals through clear, well-defined career development pathways, rather than fostering illusions of advancement with no tangible endpoint. Recognizing and addressing this reality is not only urgent but essential for maintaining competitiveness and preventing a deeper talent crisis in this research-driven economy. #TalentCrisis #ineffectivestrategies #PursuingThistles

📊 Supporting international junior researchers' career opportunities outside academia: the report 🌍Skill shortage is real, and companies are more and more aware that international recruitment is needed to fill the gap, firstly by trying to include international talent (students and researchers) already present in the country. 🔎To emphasize the importance of this perspective, and through funding from Vinnova (the Swedish Innovation Agency), EURAXESS Sweden investigated possible actions to be done at national universities, as well as the role of industry to support international junior researchers in finding work opportunities in academia and beyond in Sweden. ↪️Read the full report (available in Swedish and in English) here: https://lnkd.in/dWxBWihi

#PostdocTransformation show AdventCalendar, Nr. 4 Everyone in the PhD career realm knows her. In many ways, Dr. Holly Prescott has been the first in her educational journey and I wanted to interview a role model and postgraduate researcher career specialist for the #UK. Here are some news from her: Was there a surprising moment during the interview? Holly: "Something that especially stuck with me from our interview was the discussion around how researchers and their career prospects are located at a complex intersection of government policy and institutional (i.e. university) strategy. Inconsistencies between these (e.g. university strategies to recruit more #PhD students, but government policies and funding changes which impact numbers of academic jobs, for instance) can impact researchers' prospects, and I don't think is talked about as much as it could be." Did you share any personal insights? Holly: "That you can bring your 'researcher brain' (i.e. your rigour, your ability to bring an evidence-based approach to your work) to all different types of work. Just because you move away from doing a research-focused job doesn't mean that you completely stop using your researcher brain and mindset (if that makes sense!)." What part of the conversation was the most enjoyable? Holly: "It was actually one part that I asked Eleonore to miss out because nothing was confirmed then, but now it is... I have a book contract! My book 'Navigating Careers Beyond #Academia: A Practical Handbook for Doctoral and Postdoctoral Researchers' will be published by Routledge (hopefully in 2026)!" Additional tip? "My blog #PostGradual which tackles a range of questions and issues around post-PhD careers (as linked in the comments). What is your service, product, competition, so that we can amplify your reach for 2025? Holly: "I work with many careers offices or researcher development offices to offer training workshops (in person and online) for PhD researchers on understanding what you want from life post-PhD, exploring career options beyond academia, and translating your skills beyond academia. If universities or institutes are interested, they can get in touch, as linked in the comments!" See comments to 🎧 and Italy will be next!

HEIs & Career Consultants working with researchers/PhDs should be making use of our global community resource: https://lnkd.in/eGm-Ru-R It is a significant, and beneficial resource (which is about to be improved further with upgrades) - which supports your efforts with students. We've already had interest in institutional membership (for faculty recruitment), and 'subsidised memberships' for students/alumni. The latter, subsidised memberships, will be of great benefit to you and others like you, Holly Prescott! It has never been easier to support PhDs with career development.
PhD Careers Specialist | Supporting researchers’ career transitions | Academia to Industry | Trainer | FHEA | QCG | PhD
There are loads of reasons why doctoral researchers may not 'engage' with 'training' focused on careers beyond academia. These include: 😕 Simply not having the time to do everything needed for their research, everything needed for their lives, AND attend extra events on top of that. 😕 Fear of being treated differently or seen as 'less committed' by supervisors and peers if they express an interest in careers beyond academia. 😕 The overwhelm involved in navigating what training and support is available, who on earth is running it, where to find it, and how to access it, when institutions are often so unwieldy and devolved. At the same time, staff (including career practitioners and researcher developers) also have constraints, including: 😕 Working in a 'resource constrained environment' - i.e., being expected to do 'more with less.' 😕 Research students not featuring heavily in institutional metrics and measures, and hence not being considered a priority. SO... how can we support doctoral researchers' career development beyond academia in ways that both consider barriers to their participation AND are within staff capacity and resources? Dig into just this at my in-person workshop on embedding a 'Career-Wise Approach to PGR Support' which I'm very pleased to have had accepted for Vitae's #VitaeCon2024 Conference! 11:00, Monday 23 September. Hope to see some of you there! https://lnkd.in/evFAPNQD
