📢🎓 Newsletter Alert: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁! As we head into the weekend, I know many of you are looking for something thought-provoking to keep your mind busy. I've got you covered! This issue is packed with inspiring articles, blog posts and news that are well worth your time. Among the many highlights, there's one gem I just have to share right now - a story that captures exactly why I love working with the vibrant, quirky science community. Vittorio Aita, a research associate at King's College London, found a creative way to track the progress of his dissertation: in cups of espresso. ☕️📈 His wonderful article, featured in the newsletter, reveals how this caffeine-fueled metric kept him motivated through tough times. How many espressos do you think it took to cross the finish line? It's a brilliant read and a perfect example of the unique perspective (and humour) that makes the world of research so special. Have a look and enjoy! Marius PS: We're almost at 1,000 subscribers! If you find the newsletter valuable, I'd love for you to share it with your community or anyone else who might benefit. Thank you for being part of this journey!

  • 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸: 𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸 - 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘀 𝗔𝗹𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁? 👀 We recently hosted a lunch talk with Regina Becker and Harry Williams, two of the brains behind the Leibniz PostDoc Network's latest survey. 📊 The survey shed light on the working conditions, mental health, and career prospects of Leibniz postdocs in Germany. But here's the thing: the challenges faced by #Postdocs are not unique to one institution, but are pervasive across #GermanAcademia. "𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘬 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘥𝘰𝘤𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘎𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳’𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘴 [...] 𝘐𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘥𝘰𝘤𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺'𝘴 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘬 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘥, 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘺 𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘥, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘶𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘢 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴." -Dr. Harry Williams- So, what can we do about it? 🤔 We're calling on postdocs, postdoc coordinators, academic leaders, and policymakers to join the conversation and work together to create a #ResearchCulture that attracts and retains talent. 🌟 Join the discussion and take action: 🔹 Participate in the #LeibnizPostdocSurvey: https://lnkd.in/dvaSfeb7 🔹 Join the GPN working groups to advocate for change: https://lnkd.in/dYTN_JXp 🔹 Connect with peer networks to make your voice heard and benefit from peer support Let's work together to make staying in German academia a possible and attractive choice! 🤝

  • Political upheavals in Berlin—and now, WissZeitVG? The #WisszeitVG reform, which aims to change the legal framework for fixed-term employment in academia seems to be in limbo after the collapse of the governing coalition in Germany as well as the resignation of the Minister for Research and Education, Bettina Stark-Watzinger. The reform was discussed on 13 November in the Committee on Education, Research and Technology Assessment of the parliament, but the hearing produced no clear outcome or decision on the next steps of the reform. Members of all political parties were present and able to ask questions addressed to six experts. Interestingly, there were no representatives of PhDs or Postdocs, the group most affected by the bill. Instead, many groups and networks representing early-career researchers sent in statements unsolicited, which were distributed and acknowledged. 📣 So what's next for the reform? The next elections are scheduled for February 2025, and a new coalition and Minister for Research and Education will have to continue working on this topic. 🤔 For more details on the WissZeitVG reform check out the blog posts on our website ➡️ https://lnkd.in/d67i6c9B
