This rubric for early-career researchers to use in prioritising which projects to pursue resonates with me in a career sense (as a non-scientific researcher)! So often you have competing demands on your attention that aren't necessarily BAU for your role and choosing wisely which to pursue can really set you up for success both personally and professionally. The most rewarding periods I've experienced in my career have been from choosing opportunities to pursue that weren't necessarily on my 'top 5' in terms of succeeding in my current role, but rather have been creating stepping stones to something new. Anyway, that's my 2c on this Nature article! https://lnkd.in/gtCyn3B8

Many people are reaching out to me since my last post about research. It may look hypocritical to discourage pursuing research opportunities, while I am a research scholar myself. So here is some context: I went unmatched in 2023 with zero interviews. That’s right, zero. I was very surprised given the fact that my scores were very good (240s), I had submitted the minimum 3 LORs required, and I had 8 publications on my ERAS CV. After investigating where I went wrong, I realised how much time and effort I had put into research, while paying very less attention to the quality of my rotations and LORs. Going through agencies is not a bad option, sometimes it’s the only option for most IMGs. However, unless you connect well with the doctor and shine during your rotation, your LOR will be very vague and not tailored to your skills. I am not discouraging pursuing research opportunities, in fact, I believe I learnt a lot through my research experiences and it will definitely make me a stronger physician. What I pointed out is the trend of seeing 10-20 publications on candidates’ CVs with weak USCEs. Put your energy, money and time where it matters. That is all I want to convey. I wish everyone the best! :)

For my Graduate Career Consortium colleagues, this was a sobering article in "Studies in Graduate and Postdoctoral Education" on the lack of engagement in career development activities among doctoral students. The authors found very low engagement with career services experts ("It was striking that nearly all who were interviewed said they had not engaged with career services, yet in hindsight, all wished they had."), and quite varied support for career development at the program and advisor level.
