UK start-up Sun Bear Biofuture has developed a sustainable alternative to palm oil using fermentation techniques. “We work with a strain of yeast that naturally produces an oil that’s very similar in composition and functional properties to palm oil,” Sun Bear Biofuture’s CTO told FoodNavigator in an article published recently. “We’re working with side stream-derived feedstocks, things like potato peels and bread waste, which are cheaper than using sugar and are also more sustainable.” The company aims to replicate refined palm oil and is collaborating with AberInnovation to test the process using large scale fermenters. Sun Bear Biofuture says its technique means palm oil can be locally, sustainably and transparently sourced, which will help companies to comply with the new EU Deforestation Regulation coming into force this December. #Palmoil #Sustainability #EUDR #Deforestation #Productinnovation

Exploring beyond performance, our focus shifts to the environmental impacts of enzyme supplementation in feeds. In this episode, we discussed the environmental impacts of producing pig feeds by simulating the effects of β-mannanase supplementation through energy savings during diet formulation. β-mannans are present in a great variety of feedstuffs, including soybean, corn DDG, sunflower, copra, and palm kernel meal-based diets. They are associated with increased intestinal viscosity and decreased nutrient digestibility, following an inflammatory process initiated in response to the β-mannans presence. β-mannanase supplementation reduced the amount of soybean oil in feed formulas, which is associated with high environmental impacts. Consequently, the potential impacts of climate change and eutrophication associated with feed production were substantially mitigated. How we turned waste products into an actual food source 🚀 Last week 🍄 Franziskus Schnabel and Dr. Nina-Katharina Krahe visited the main plant of the frischli Milchwerke GmbH dairy. Frischli is one of the most modern and efficient dairies in Germany, with high standards when it comes to sustainability and innovation. In their search for innovative solutions for a sustainable circular economy within their own production, they found their way to the German Fermentation Summit where they got to know our Kynda team. One of the issues they face is what to do with the oat okara, the residue left over after extracting oat base from oat flour. Luckily for them (and us), upcycling this side stream is one of our specialities. Okara by-products usually end up in biogas plants - an artificial oxygen-free system where you can turn waste into energy and fertilisers. However, with our highly efficient technology, we can ferment okara into an incredibly valuable food raw material within just 48 hours, helping to create a profitable circular economy ♻️ Alongside Marvin Finke and his innovation team, we examined the oat base production process; integrating okara directly into our bioprocess. After 48 hours, we tasted the result together. It was fantastic to demonstrate the synergies so clearly, right through to the end product 🤝 #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #BioTech

These fatty acids replace those made from petroleum or palm oil.
