UK start-up Sun Bear Biofuture has developed a sustainable alternative to palm oil using fermentation techniques. “We work with a strain of yeast that naturally produces an oil that’s very similar in composition and functional properties to palm oil,” Sun Bear Biofuture’s CTO told FoodNavigator in an article published recently. “We’re working with side stream-derived feedstocks, things like potato peels and bread waste, which are cheaper than using sugar and are also more sustainable.” The company aims to replicate refined palm oil and is collaborating with AberInnovation to test the process using large scale fermenters. One industry’s “waste” can be the alternative protein industry’s want How we can combat food waste and loss with alternative proteins. In the United States, the equivalent of 145 billion meals every year are wasted. That means nearly 40 % of all food goes unsold or uneaten. These statistics are difficult to reconcile with the sheer number of people who experience food insecurity in this country: 44.2 million in 2022 according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Using anaerobic digestation sites to process the leftovers and food waste to Biomethane could not only provide a clean fuel for Space Travel via #SpaceX, chemical feedstock to grow more staples with sustainable Fertilizer such as #Urea via the Haber-Bosch- Process, but actually produce feed and food right away, like companies such as #Calysta already showcase.

The global food industry is on the brink of a significant transformation, and algae are poised to be a key player. Despite being a relatively new area of agriculture, algae are increasingly recognized as a potential solution to the pressing food security challenges we face. Why Algae? Algae cultivation has several benefits. It does not rely on arable land and can yield oil- and/or protein-rich biomass with a spatial efficiency far surpassing terrestrial plants. Moreover, algae are rich in vitamins, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and other beneficial compounds, leading to growing consumer demand and commercial interest. Challenges and Opportunities Algae and algae-derived products are primarily produced for high-value, low-volume markets. They need to be able to compete with inexpensive commodities such as plant-based proteins or fossil fuels. High investment and production costs are seen as the main reason for this. However, developing new production technologies and monetizing ecosystem services, such as water treatment, CO2 sequestration, and nutrient recycling, are the most promising ways forward. Algae’s Future in the Food Industry The Algae for Food & Feed initiative is striving to sustainably feed the world through innovative algal-based products that meet consumers’ expectations for taste, quality, price, and convenience. With the global population projected to reach 9.8 billion by 2050 and food demand expected to be 70% higher than today, algae-based solutions could be the key to averting this impending crisis. A sustainable “algae industry” could be a crucial part of the future economy, enabling more resource-efficient food and fuel production and creating new products, companies, and jobs. By 2050, global food production will have to increase by 50% to meet the needs of a growing population - innovative solutions are therefore vital to ensure a more sustainable food supply 💡 The process of bioconversion uses insects to transform organic waste from the agricultural and agri-food industries into animal feed and fertiliser, which is helping to create a more circular food chain as well as maximising the value of organic by-products. In Malaysia, Veolia runs one of Asia’s largest industrial structures dedicated to insect production with a capacity of 3,000 tons per year, and markets its protein products: EntomealTM (flour) and Entolipid (oil).
