📢 #WorldEarthDay2024 🌍 As climate change continues to displace people around the world, it is more important than ever to acknowledge and tackle the vital role of a healthy ecosystem for migrants and refugees. 🌍 At Samuel Hall, we believe that global change starts locally. This #WorldEarthDay, we are calling for locally-led action that respects and incorporates the voices of communities and their traditional knowledge systems into policy and programming. 🔎 Through our research and collaborations with IOM - UN Migration, UN Environment Programme, UNDP, UNEP-WCMC, Greater Caribbean Climate Mobility Initiative and more along with local conversations with communities across Africa, South & Central Asia and the Caribbean, we have seen that dialogues are most constructive at the local level. 💡 By working with communities to understand their needs and priorities, we can develop locally-led solutions that are both effective and sustainable. Moreover, given local government bodies can rapidly mitigate impacts of #climatechange, given their proximity to and socio-cultural awareness of the communities they work with. 🌆 For instance, Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr OBE announced Africa’s ‘First Chief Heat Officer’ to monitor heat waves - following on from her ‘Freetown the Tree Town’ campaign, which will see 1 million trees planted over three rainy seasons. Mayors Migration Council has also highlighted critical calls to action focused on urban resilience, inclusion, and transformation. Samuel Hall collaborated with MMC to author a policy brief on urban planning alongside displaced communities for the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) PDUW project. Additionally, we have engaged in discussions through our participatory forums in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, aimed at developing green spaces that cater specifically to women, youth, and displaced communities. ➡ https://lnkd.in/dgj4mg-V With a focus on local decision-making, we are passionate about inclusive & equitable action that puts people at the heart of climate conversations. Creating Climate Awareness and Practical Solutions😎🔥👊🏼 Through #ECOWATCH—a project by ERA AXIS which is a #youth led initiative, sponsored by Bloomberg Philanthropies and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) —we’ve engaged over 760 locals in the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, completing over 80% of our goal. Our initiative, "Spread The Word, Save The Planet," is making a measurable impact. We not only raised awareness about air pollution and #climate change, but also trained participants on indoor plants they can adopt to filter the air they breathe, enhancing their health and well-being. By understanding local communities and speaking their language, we’ve ensured lasting change. We’re excited to expand this movement to other regions and welcome partnerships to continue the journey! 📧 Contact us at admin@eratechgh.com for collaborations. The Earth Doesn't Owe Us Anything, We Owe It Everything We live in a world obsessed with "taking." Taking resources, taking power, taking for granted. We've forgotten the simple truth: the Earth doesn't owe us anything. We owe it everything. Imagine if we were given just a little, a tiny fraction of what this planet offers? Would we be so quick to pollute its air, destroy its forests, and poison its waters? Would we treat this incredible life-giving force with such disregard? A king of the toilet will always be a king of the toilet, they say. True. But a leader, a true leader, doesn't rule by taking, they rule by giving. They inspire, they protect, they build. They understand that true power lies not in what you can take, but in what you can create. The Earth is our home, our provider, our guide. It's time we show it the respect it deserves. It's time to stop taking and start giving. Start today. Start with a small act of kindness, a conscious choice, a voice raised for change. We're all talking about climate change, but are we REALLY doing anything about it? Okay, so we're all talking about climate change and how bad things are getting, right? But it feels like everyone's packing their bags and heading for "greener pastures" - like, what's that about? 🤔 Are we just going to leave Africa to fend for itself? Is that how we solve the problem? It's like running away from a monster instead of facing it head-on! We need to stop talking and start doing something, right? We need to stand up and fight for our continent! We're not going to find a better place to live - this is our home! Think about it: who's going to plant trees if we all leave? Who's going to clean up the pollution? Who's going to teach people about taking care of the environment? It's gotta be us! We need to be the change we want to see! We need to get our hands dirty and start working. We need to show the world that we care about our planet and our future. We need to prove that Africa is a place of hope and action, not just despair and escape. So, instead of looking for greener pastures somewhere else, let's make our own green pastures right here! Let's get to work and show the world that we're not just talking the talk - we're walking the walk. #ClimateAction #StayAndFight #GreenPastures #AfricaRising #Environmentalism #Sustainability #HopeForAfrica #YouthEmpowerment #ClimateJustice #BeTheChange UN Environment Programme UNDP YALI Regional Leadership Center West Africa, Accra ACEF - Africa Climate and Environment Foundation The Climate Reality Project Greenpeace USAID Mastercard Foundation UNESCO Yaounde

Fluency in English should never hold back rural children from contributing to critical conversations about our environment. Meet Samuel, a 13-year-old from Ssekanyonyi in Primary Six. Samuel is a young environmental champion who is passionate about trees. In this video, he’s standing by a mango tree, using it as an example to teach his peers about the incredible benefits of trees from providing fruits like mangoes to cleaning the air, supporting biodiversity, and combating climate change through carbon sequestration. As part of our #EveryTreeCountsCampaign, Samuel is not only advocating for tree planting but also inspiring his fellow children to take action for a better planet. His enthusiasm reminds us that anyone, regardless of their background or language skills, can be a powerful voice in climate action. Let’s continue to engage and empower more children like Samuel to become leaders in protecting our environment. Together, we can grow a greener, more sustainable future for all. 🌱🌍 Harriet Namazzi UNICEF UNESCO YOUNGO Harriet Ministries Uganda Limited UNFCCC-WGEO Regional Collaboration Centre (RCC) MENA and SA #ClimateAction #TreePlanting #CarbonSequestration #YouthForClimate #EnvironmentalStewardship #SustainableFuture #EmpoweringYouth #GlobalCitizenship #EveryActionCounts #TogetherForThePlanet

🌍 My Climate Journey🌿 From a young age, I’ve always felt a deep connection to nature. Growing up, I was captivated by the beauty of the environment around me, from the trees to the wildlife that thrived in harmony with it. This love for nature shaped my perspective on the world, and even as an Art student, I found myself drawn to Biology. To me, it wasn’t just a science; it was a real-life subject that explained the balance between all living things. However, as I grew older, I saw how the actions of man is threatening this balance. Practices like bush burning, deforestation, and unchecked urbanization disturb me. My journey into climate action has been fueled by this early love for nature and my desire to protect our planet for future generations. The UNDP #IAMSAHEL campaign, mission is for raising awareness against destructive environmental practices and promotion of sustainability in the Sahel and West and Central Africa regions. It's not just about planting trees or reducing plastic use. It's about fostering a culture of sustainability, advocacy, and education. It can be through raising awareness, policy change, or promotion of eco-friendly practices in everyday life, we all have a role to play. How did your climate journey start? What actions are you taking to protect our environment? Let’s inspire one another to create lasting change! 🌎💚 #ClimateAction #NatureLover #Sustainability #EnvironmentalProtection #UNSDGs #UNDP #IamSahel #WildlifeProtection #GreenFuture

Celebrating International Youth Day - A Call to Action for Climate Change Advocacy in Liberia On this Day of International Youth Day, we gather to not only celebrate the vibrant energy and creativity of our youth but also to acknowledge their crucial role in addressing one of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change. In Liberia, where the impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly evident, young people are positioned as vital catalysts for climate justice and sustainable development in their communities. Climate change poses significant threats to Liberia, as evidenced by rising sea levels, increasing rainfall, and erratic weather patterns. According to the World Bank, Liberia is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate-related risks, which directly affects agriculture, infrastructure, and public health. Our nation has witnessed devastating flooding in recent years, with the 2020 flood impacting over 40,000 people, according to the Liberia National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA). Furthermore, food security remains a critical challenge, with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reporting that approximately 1.5 million Liberians faced food insecurity in 2021, largely influenced by climate variability. The impacts of climate change extend beyond just flooding and food insecurity; air pollution has emerged as another serious concern. According to the WHO, air pollution contributes to over 7 million premature deaths worldwide each year, affecting the most vulnerable populations, including the youth. With youth representing over 60% of Liberia's population, their involvement in climate change advocacy is not just beneficial; it is essential. Young Liberians possess the innovative spirit and energy required to lead community-driven climate initiatives. They can harness social media and grassroots outreach to raise awareness about climate issues and mobilize support for sustainable practices. Initiatives led by youth can include tree planting campaigns, clean-up drives, and educational workshops focusing on environmental conservation. By engaging their peers and community members, young people can advocate for policies that promote climate resilience, thus ensuring a sustainable and healthy environment for future generations. We recognize the pivotal role of key stakeholders like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Liberia, which sets the framework for environmental policy and climate action. Collaboration between the EPA and youth-led organizations, such as Youth Action Lead Liberia, creates a powerful alliance that enables effective grassroots mobilization and advocacy. By providing young leaders with the tools, training, and platforms to voice their concerns, these organizations can ignite a movement for climate justice across the nation. Happy #World_Environment_Day! On this day, June 5th, we at African Risk Capacity (ARC) join the global community in reaffirming our commitment to environmental stewardship. World Environment Day serves as a powerful reminder of our collective duty to protect our planet. This year's focus is on "Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience." The UN Convention to Combat Desertification reports a staggering fact: up to 40% of the planet's land is degraded, directly impacting half of the world's population. The frequency and duration of droughts have increased by 29% since 2000, making urgent action not just necessary but imperative. Without intervention, droughts could affect over three-quarters of the world's population by 2050. At ARC, we recognise the gravity of these challenges, particularly in Africa, where the effects of land degradation and drought are deeply felt. We are steadfast in our mission to provide innovative financial solutions, empowering African nations to fortify their resilience against these environmental threats. This year’s El Niño impact in Southern Africa highlights the severe consequences of climate change. ARC stands with its member states—Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique—and partners to provide over USD 62 million payouts through their participation in the drought risk pool for the 2023/24 season. These funds will deliver immediate relief to farming households affected by drought. Our Commitments: - Reducing Environmental Impact: We advocate for and implement sustainable practices across all operations. - Building Resilience: We develop and provide financial tools that help communities withstand and recover from environmental shocks. ARC firmly believe in the strength of collective action. Together, we can forge a future where our communities flourish in symbiosis with nature. Let’s stand united in our mission to restore our lands and construct a sustainable world for the generations to come. Let's make every day a step towards a greener, more resilient future! #WorldEnvironmentDay #LandRestoration #DroughtResilience African Union African Union Development Agency-NEPAD Programme Alimentaire Mondial United Nations Economic Commission for Africa BADEA - Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa European Union African Development Bank Group Affaires mondiales Canada | Global Affairs Canada KfW Direction du développement et de la coopération Start Network UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency UNFCCC UN UNFCCC-WGEO Regional Collaboration Centre (RCC) MENA and SA Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Global Green Growth Institute Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation African Risk Capacity Ltd.
