Synergizing Forces: Uniting Business and Academia for Gender Balance in Science Gender diversity in science remains a pressing issue, urging collaboration between academia and industry for inclusivity and equity. A recent roundtable by Hi! PARIS Center - AI for Society gathered esteemed researchers and industry leaders, Stephane Lannuzel from L'Oréal, Dimitri BETTEBGHOR, Ph.D from Schneider Electric, and Patrick Masseglia from Capgemini to address: "How can men and boys support women and girls in science?" Led by Professor Anne Laure Sellier, the discussion explored innovative strategies to advance gender diversity in #STEM fields, emphasizing early intervention and education to inspire girls in STEM. Engaging with young girls and challenging gender norms, men and boys in science can dismantle barriers and inspire future female scientists. The roundtable underscored the need for proactive organizational measures to tackle gender disparities, with industry leaders outlining initiatives like mentorship programs and flexible work arrangements. "There is still much work to be done. It requires time, the right mindset, and, most importantly, engagement from everyone. Invest in Women to Accelerate Progress this International Women's Day Today we join the global community in recognising and celebrating the remarkable contributions of women in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Achieving gender equality, and supporting women irrespective of their choice of career or life path, is as crucial as ever for maintaining a healthy planet and building economies that are fair and prosperous. However, we still face a staggering $360 billion annual deficit in spending on gender equality measures. For that reason, the theme for the UN International Women’s Day 2024 is Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress. By investing in women, we invest in a bright future for everyone. Extraordinary women have triumphed across the field of audio-visual technology, driving forward progress that has positioned us where we are today. Examples include Hedy Lamarr, who - in addition to being a much-loved film star - was the inventor of a radio communications device which is a component of present-day satellite and cellular phone technology. Radia Perlman is a computer programmer and network engineer who’s development of the algorithm behind the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) earned her the nickname ‘Mother of the Internet’. Marian Croak, currently Vice President of Engineering at Google, advanced Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technologies, which enables calls to be made directly from digital devices. These women are proof that investing in women yields extraordinary innovations. I would like to thank Equipo de Propulsión Espacial y Plasmas and Olympia Driva for this post and also to take advantage of it to share some thoughts. 🚀 I feel extremely grateful for having had this chance to carry out a challenging and inspiring PhD journey at Equipo de Propulsión Espacial y Plasmas, full of non-stop learning since 2019. My highly talented and hardworking colleague Tatiana Perrotin and I have been the only two women PhD candidates* in electric propulsion in the EP2 Group after Dr. Sara Correyero Plaza, a pioneer and role model. Younger successful women like Irene Valles Sánchez have enriched our team during their Bachelor or Master's theses. ❗ ♀Tatiana and I, are now both close to finishing our respective PhDs. It is disheartening that the number of women applying to enroll is significantly lower than men, and there are no women expected to join our PhD EP2 team in the coming months. 🔁 As Olympia Driva mentioned within the post, promoting gender parity in our field is also an individual responsibility. This starts by trying to understand why there is a dramatic gender gap when choosing engineering studies and promoting and participating in effective policies to save it. Additionally, contributing to create work environments that allow women to focus solely on our work/research, without having to reclaim space that is often consciously or unconsciously denied, remains a challenge in many scenarios. Having to overprove ourselves and strive for our work to be recognized is a hard reality in these. Additionally, an extreme level of assertiveness is often required to avoid facing this without "tarnishing" your image. This is not only exhausting but also unfair. 🚀 ✨ Therefore, let's collaborate to render this celebration unnecessary over time, engaging in critical self-reflection. *) 2 women/+20 people (including PhD candidates, Postdocs and Senior Researchers). Happy International Women in Engineering Day, from our lab! The percentage of women in STEM at the EU level keeps rising, but their representation in engineering in Spain tells a different story. In honour of the day say hello to our students Scherezade Barquero, Tatiana Perrotin, and Irene Valles Sánchez 👩🔧 👩💻 International Women in Engineering Day and other similar initiaves let us celebrate our successes towards women's representation in the sector. At the same time, it is also a starting point for critically assessing the current situation and coming up with solutions that drive forward much-needed changes. Spain is a point of reference in the EU for its progressive gender equality laws and good statistics, but there is room for improvement. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain: ✔ The persentage of women pursuing and completing higher education degrees in engineering at all levels has been increasing in the last 5 years. ✔ The gap between genders in the business sector remains unchanged. ❌ However, there is a significant drop of women researchers in research: in 2021 their presence is at 12%, dropping 6,5 points compared to 2016. ❌ The proportion of female principal investigators represents barely 40% of applications and awards in R&D project calls; they also receive 38% of the funding. A lot of the changes need to came from EU or National legislative actors, but we also hold power as individuals. In our lab we actively encourage women to apply to open positions. We also participate in public outreach events to expose younger generations to positive role-models and inspire girls to become engineers. 🔬✨ As part of #EELISA member PSL Research University long-term goal of making engineering and STEM more accessible to both men and women, and enrolling a greater diversity of students, the "Women Leaders in Science" is a new online course they've prepared 💡free and open to all!! 🔬✨ Focusing on gender balance, social diversity, and inclusion in science, this course serves as an awareness tool for diverse audiences and can be used in groups or individually. 📚 What You Will Learn: – Identify the main sociological mechanisms behind gender biases in the scientific field. – Discover great scientific women and the challenges they faced. – Learn about successful policies to combat gender biases in science. #InternationalWomensDay advocates for SDG5 - Gender Equality - and recognizes global efforts since its inception in 1909 and UN endorsement in 1975.   🎭⚛️ ARTS & SCIENCES - Here's to #womenchangethegame and polymaths who expand societal horizons beyond space-time:   🌏 Alexandra David-Néel - a pioneering adventurer, #explorer and writer, first European woman to visit Lhasa/Tibet in 1924. Her writings profoundly influenced Western perceptions of #Asian #spiritualtraditions, especially Tibetan Buddhism, breaking significant cultural-geographical barriers.    🧬 Rosalind Franklin - an chemist whose work was crucial in understanding DNA, RNA, viruses, coal & graphite structures. Her X-ray diffraction images, particularly #Photo51, revealed the DNA #doublehelix structure. Despite her fundamental & key contributions to this discovery, the #NobelPrize went to her colleagues Watson, Crick, and Wilkins, prompting discussions about genderbias in science.   📡 Hedwig Kiesler (Hedy Lamarr) - who graced my highschool room walls. A film actress & ingenious #inventor, she co-developed a technology precursor to modern #WiFi, #GPS & #Bluetooth, with her work in frequency-hopping spread spectrum.    🩻Marie Curie - the wellknown physicist & chemist, first woman to win a Nobel Prize and uniquely awarded in two different sciences. Her work on #radioactivity was pivotal in medical treatment and #nuclearphysics.   🦟Tu Youyou - awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine 2015 for discovering artemisinin, saving millions from #malaria. She merged traditional Chinese medicine with science, illustrating innovation in #globalhealth.   ✍🏻Virginia Woolf - Icon of modern literature, shaped the narrative of the 20th century with her #streamofconsciousness technique, capturing the complexity of inner soulscapes. Her work pushed for women to have their opportunities to be #creative - to inspire gender equality in the arts.   💻Ada Lovelace - A mathematician and writer. Her notes on Babbage's Analytical Engine included the first #algorithm for machine processing. She blended maths with language, pioneering #computationalarts.   🏛️Maya Lin - an artist & architect deeply engaged with the #environment & history.
