Over ons
The three disciplines in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) play a pivotal role in tech-driven innovation. Mathematics, one of the pillars of every technological science, provides the intellectual and professional tools that are the basic equipment of every engineer. You may say that mathematics is inside everything. Information and communication technology (ICT) is also everywhere around us in society. It is one of the new paradigms of recent history. Electrical Engineering and Computer Science together alone account for 80% of the ICT research at TU Delft. With our combined power, knowledge and facilities, we work to manage and solve the social problems of today and those we anticipate in the future. Providing reliable answers to causal questions. That's what the consortium project of Jesse Krijthe, assistant professor within the Pattern Recognition & Bioinformatics group, Aad van der Vaart, statistics professor at the Delft Institute of Applied Mathematics, and colleagues from Leiden, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam, is all about. Learning about cause and effect is at the heart of science. Some scientific disciplines use experiments for this purpose, but many important societal questions can only be answered by collecting data from everyday practice. Applying artificial intelligence to learn from this type of data is promising, but can lead to unsubstantiated, incorrect and potentially harmful conclusions and decisions. The consortium called ‘Safe Causal Inference’, will conduct groundbreaking research and develop new scientific insights and methods to combine expert knowledge and data-driven methods. This will lead to methods to provide reliable answers to causal questions. To achieve a breakthrough within this research, the consortium has received the Open Competition ENW-XL grant from NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) and has been awarded 2.5 million euros. Many congratulations Jesse and Aad! #causalresearch #cause #effect #research #science

TU Delft | Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science heeft dit gerepost
This Tuesday, we celebrated the end of the year with a wonderful 'QCE All Social Event' at our Quantum and Computer Engineering department, TU Delft | Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science. It was a simple yet fantastic gathering that brought out the incredible talents, cultural diversity, and warm inclusivity of our department. The program began with a mesmerizing performance by our youngest colleague, Dr. Shima Rajabali, who played a beautiful traditional Iranian piece on the Santoor about yellow sparrows in the fields. Next, our amazing students and the department’s own band took the stage with fantastic performances. The evening wrapped up with a surprise finale from our inspiring and super cool department head, Professor Robert Kooij —it was a blast! A big thanks to Rob for your leadership and warmth, and to our dedicated management staff for arranging this event and supporting us every day. It’s a privilege to be part of the QCE family, doing fantastic science with such talented and vibrant colleagues—and we look forward to doing even cooler science together in the coming year!
