For our next #SustainabilitySpotlight, we are featuring Andrea Eichenberger. Andrea graduated from UVA in 2022 with an Accelerated Master of Public Policy and a Bachelor's degree in Foreign Affairs with a minor in Latin American Studies. She is a Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) Accelerator Coordinator at the Nature Conservancy. She has always felt passionate about the environment and used to work locally on recycling and litter prevention education. But she thought a career in sustainability was at odds with her education in international relations. It didn't occur to her that the two fields weren't mutually exclusive until she learned about international climate policy. Andrea had an "aha" moment while taking Professor Deborah Lawrence's introductory environmental science class, where upon learning so many clear and decisive facts, she felt she must do what she could to address climate change through her career. She had the good fortune of landing an internship with the Nature Conservancy (TNC) International Climate Policy team through the UVA Environmental Institute internship program. Then, later, she collaborated with a former TNC coworker on that team to develop her thesis for her Batten MPP, which was about compliance carbon markets. Following graduation, she made sure to focus her efforts on applying to a few key organizations she was especially interested in working for. Her previous work experience with TNC definitely helped her forge connections and gain important knowledge that led to her being hired for this position. Although it's easier said than done, Andrea believes it greatly helps to narrow in on some specific interests relating to sustainability. The field is so expansive it helps if you can determine specific interest in something, like carbon markets, energy policy, land conservation, etc. At UVA specifically, she strongly recommends staying up to date on career opportunities through the career center and signing up for any newsletter you can. In particular, the Environmental Institute's annual intern and externship opportunities are a really great way to get an idea of what a sustainability career could look like. Andrea recommends tailoring your school papers and projects to your sustainability interests. She had some level of freedom in choosing the topics of her papers in grad school, which allowed her to write memos about topics in her field of interest like natural climate solutions and carbon markets. This is super helpful if you need to provide writing samples for positions, and you can reference relevant research projects you have completed in cover letters for positions. Another opportunity she’d recommend if you have any interest in public sector work is the Virtual Student Federal Service (VSFS) program through the federal government. It was super helpful for her to learn about the wide variety of opportunities available in the NGO space and in the public sector.

The City of Sacramento 2024 Voluntary Local Review (VLR) on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is officially published 🌞 Recently, I had the great honor of working on the City of Sacramento 2024 VLR as part of my internship with UC Davis Global Affairs. It is a phenomenal achievement for Sacramento to be the 5th US city to conduct a VLR 🎉 What’s a VLR? 🤔 A VLR is voluntarily assessment process for local or regional governments to investigate and report on their progress in meeting the 17 UN SDGs. Why are they important? 🤝 By utilizing the frameworks of the UN SDGs, VLRs provide insight into the most pressing issues communities are facing and help to create and improve actionable plans for the future. They are conducted in efforts to localize the SDGs and prompt commitment to change, both for local governments and community-run organizations. Additionally, they encourage collaboration and invigorate cross-generational partnership for the SDGs, a crucial component often missing at higher levels. What did I do? 😁 My role in this project was proofreading drafts for grammar, flow, and visual representation. It was insightful learning about the initiatives of the City of Sacramento and local organizations to make the world more sustainable, equitable, and inclusive. We are celebrating #WorldYouthSkillsDay, a day dedicated to highlighting the importance of equipping young people with the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving global landscape. Investing in skills for young learners is not just an economic imperative but a moral one. This huge disparity hinders personal growth and also perpetuates a cycle of inequality. 🌍 Equipping students with much-needed skills in leadership, critical thinking, digital literacy, entrepreneurship, cultural fluency and collaboration, will empower them to become proactive agents of change in our communities and beyond. 👐 We have a collective responsibility to support students in their journey of skill development. Experiential learning environments are essential in bridging the #skillsgap and unlocking opportunities. At Pagoda Projects, we're proud to support the next generation through #ExperientialLearning, programmes, placements, internships and sustainable experiences. Here's a snapshot of that in action 👇 https://lnkd.in/e8M-GJBX

🌍 Environmental Education: The Key to Sustainable Development🌱 As a final-year student of Environmental Education and Management, I am constantly reminded of the critical role that education plays in shaping a sustainable future. Our environment is at a tipping point, and it’s our responsibility to ensure that the next generation is well-informed and equipped to tackle the challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and unsustainable practices. Education goes beyond the classroom—it’s about raising awareness in our communities, advocating for sustainable practices, and driving policy changes that protect our planet. Whether through community outreach, environmental impact assessments, or sustainable project management, the work we do today will define the world of tomorrow. I am proud to be part of a global movement dedicated to environmental stewardship and sustainability. Let’s continue to collaborate, innovate, and inspire one another to make a positive impact. Together, we can create a resilient and sustainable world for future generations. #Sustainability #EnvironmentalEducation #ClimateChange #UNZA #SustainableDevelopment #CommunityEngagement #Innovation

Our recent publication reveals how actors from different institutions can jointly modify apprenticeship programmes so that these programmes are useful for turning low-skilled temporary workers into "Fachkräfte". By recognizing the varied aspirations of involved actors, how they develop compromises and adjust them to unexpected events, we can learn under which conditions such programmes are likely to be implemented successfully.
Our article, "How You Value Shapes Whom You Value: The Contribution of Apprenticeships to Sustainable Development Goals," was recently published in the German Journal of Human Resource Management's special issue on "Achieving Sustainable Development Goals through a Common-Good HRM: Context, Approach and Practice." Co-authored with Julia Brandl, Laverne Iminza Chore, and Mario Junker, our article explores a case study on how apprenticeship programmes can be adapted to reskill temporary workers, aligning with the decent work agenda and supporting sustainable development goals. Our findings highlight the crucial role of multistakeholder collaboration in adjusting labour market instruments to achieve sustainability goals. Our article can be freely accessed at https://lnkd.in/edQzkHid Explore this special issue for more insightful papers on this important topic! https://lnkd.in/eeuTuuYc #HRM #SustainableDevelopment #Apprenticeships #Reskilling #DecentWork #Research #Publication
