8 kilometers. That thought rang in my mind, as I paddled against the tide back to my oyster encrusted boat ramp..the bow of my kayak cresting the wind chopped swells as I inch my way back to safety. My muscled burned, and I caught no fish. A donut. It could have been easier. I could have gone for a flathead, which are plentiful around this time of the year in Sydney Harbour. Maybe some of the small tailor (Bluefish, for you people Stateside). Way easier. But no, I have to want to have a go at a summer pelagic. Fish that travel thousands of kilometres up and down the east coast of Australia…known for their brute fighting power and their Fickle nature. Kingfish. Australian salmon. Mack Tuna. Albacore. Yellowfin . Bluefin and a whole host of others. They’re supposed to be here right now, but they aren’t. And if they are here..they could be at the spot today; Gone tomorrow. Foolhardy exercise. But I want to have a crack. Multiple mornings of launching at 04:30am in the dark . Thigh and arm burning kilometres in bone chilling darkness of a Spring that still resembled Winter. Straining eyes for a crash of seagulls, or patch of water literally exploding and showering in anchovies. Multiple Donuts now. Ten..twenty kilometre round trip fighting wind and current. Hours spent tossing big flies on heavy rods for a hope against the odds. On top of that..coming home, having a quick refresh and then going onto contract work and doing good work with clientele . I would have it no other way. People have asked me how did I stay persistent, especially a year long into a wildfire of a job market. Or dealing with difficult customers from different cultures, in different timezones. Or simply getting things done and smiling when I get misunderstood. Yup. Exactly. You should follow me on my fishing soujourn some time. (P.S., I may have caught no fish, but at least I got one of those weekend photographs that make people jealous) #lifelessons #fishing #saltwateronfly #professionaldevelopment #growth #jobsearch #keepthehope

Memorable family holidays, time with friends, fishing, and cruising the tropics are great goals and dreams to have. However, with the scarcity of the three golden assets of 1/ time, 2/ health, and 3/money; seldom do we have an abundance of all three at the same time! If you're considering buying your boat, it's important to know how much time will you have to use your boat. The reason this is important is that the distance and types of waters that you wish to travel, greatly determine the time it will take for the trips of your dreams. When you look at your work schedule and your available time off, it might be faster, cheaper, and more realistic to fly to Thailand and either take your boat out from there or charter a boat. So, take some time to think about how much time you will have, and how this might change in the next 2-3 years. Water management isn’t something we talk about enough on our cruising boats. Blue-water sailors think about it a lot, obviously, and we have, in our time, installed – and mothballed – two watermakers, both hungry for power (meaning fuel) and time. They drizzle out the desalinated supply while someone on board points out how many vital minerals we were going to be missing, rattling a pack of magnesium tabs. Before that, I had the excitement in youth of allowing a much-needed shampoo for my hair (more of it then, and thicker) after three weeks of a slow tradewind crossing towards Barbados. We had been a week under unequal twin headsails, the mainsail down, and a sudden fierce rainstorm filled the bunt of it, dripping temptingly. Exuberantly I dived for the shampoo, stood under it, got going, and… damn, the rain stopped, precious fluid drained away, sun mocking, my head looking like a dried up cappuccino. Ours was not a skipper of great human sympathy, and his wife – I believed – was a secret dry-shampoo user in their vast stern cabin. So I was not allowed even a mugful to rinse. I had already been salty and sweaty and itchy for too long, so after a while of wheedling I was gloomily heading for the cockpit bucket to dip for some Atlantic and make my hair just salty and itchy but not soapy. But finally he relented. #OnboardOnline #WaterCompanyIssues #YachtingConcerns #MarineEnvironment #SustainableYachting #YachtLifeChallenges #EcoFriendlyYachting
