Winging it is what birds do - not you!
So if you're due to be speaking on a panel at an event, do your due diligence and PREPARE.
Here are my 5 emcee tips guaranteed to help you shine!
Research the crowd and how much knowledge they have on the topic. Also make sure you find out about your fellow panelists and what their perspectives are. And be clear on, not only your reasons for appearing, but what the goals of the session are.
Prepare but do NOT script your answers:
Think through your points beforehand, but avoid canned answers. Confidence comes from knowing your stuff, not reading from a screen or notes.
Tell Stories:
Share anecdotes that your audience will get. It's about relating not lecturing. You need to bring colour and meaning to your points!
Understand your role:
Why were you invited? Tailor your answers based on if you're the expert, have a specific job to do, or are presenting a unique idea.
Performance time! Bring high energy, be lively, and remember - you're there to be entertaining too!
Bonus Tip: Don't hog the spotlight. Let others speak, be charming, and show genuine interest in their viewpoints.
Ever been on a panel? Share your experiences! (Especially handling tricky questions.) Remember, panels are teamwork! You're all there to make it a valuable experience for the audience.
