Yesterday, Overstory Ventures was honored to co-host a workshop with Transformational Investing in Food Systems with a powerhouse group of 30 leading Upper Midwest farmers, farmer-led organizations, emerging brands, major industry partners and coalitions, agricultural lenders, funders, ecosystem builders, and university partners to develop major regional regenerative transition efforts or "Lighthouse Initiatives" to advance diversified, continuous living cover agriculture in the region. Thank you, David Cooper, for joining and sharing your expertise on innovative financial mechanisms to advance the regenerative transition. “If we do not transition our agricultural model to a strongly resilient model, which we believe is founded on regenerative practice, Europe’s food system is in dire jeopardy.” Richard Zaltzman, CEO at EIT Food, discussed the launch of EIT Food’s Regenerative Innovation Portfolio to improve regenerative agricultural practices in Europe and drive innovation throughout the agri-food value chain. The initiative will begin by supporting farmers, helping them manage financial risks, optimise their operations, and pilot scalable, future-proof solutions. It aims to bring together stakeholders across the food system value chain, including retailers and investors, to work collaboratively towards a regenerative transition of practices. Collaborative efforts like this will be crucial to achieving a healthier planet. "The regenerative transformation of our food system isn't just an opportunity – it's an imperative. While the evidence is clear that regenerative agriculture offers solutions to our most pressing challenges – from climate resilience to rural economic vitality to food security – we face a stark reality: current financing flows are approximately one-tenth of what's needed for critical transition. Regenerative transition requires more than just deploying capital. It requires us to reimagine how we fundamentally finance food and agriculture. Traditional capital emphasizes short-term returns and standardized metrics. Regenerative capital systems recognize the time horizons of ecological restoration, flexible structures that account for the complexity of diversified operations, and blended approaches that value multiple forms of return – financial, social, and environmental. I'm joining Transformational Investing in Food Systems, aka TIFS, in Minnesota because the Midwest represents a Lighthouse. Innovative producers see the benefits of silvopasture and diversified crop systems. Food entrepreneurs are seeking to promote and rely on a more resilient supply. Researchers are ideating regenerative systems and practices. What's missing is the financial architecture to connect these pieces—to make big money small, align incentives across the value chain, and share risk among stakeholders. But we also have unprecedented momentum. We're seeing new models emerge – from blended finance facilities that leverage public, private, and philanthropic capital to revenue-based financing that better matches agricultural cash flows to innovative arrangements that preserve ownership while enabling scale. The success of initiatives like the Amana Fund in Brazil shows what's possible when we combine innovative financial structures with solid partnerships and clear impact metrics. The TIFS workshop is about moving from possibility to action. By bringing together producers, processors, brands, investors, and ecosystem builders, we aim to co-create lighthouse initiatives that can demonstrate how to unlock capital at scale. Great to see regen farms appearing in ImpactAlpha. I am interested in seeing how GoodSAM, PBC has created its own regen ag scorecard. Scorecards like the Systemic Investing Assessment of Transformational Investing in Food Systems or Biovision Foundation's Business Agroecology Criteria Tool are important tools to create transparency in a regenerative and agroecological market that is still emerging.

Europe Launches €30 Million Regenerative Agriculture Initiative to Transform Food Systems A coalition led by EIT - European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) announced the Regenerative Innovation Portfolio, a €30 million project designed to revolutionize regenerative agriculture across Europe, aiming to integrate various stakeholders including governments, investors, and retailers, is set to receive €15 million from EIT Food and an expected matching from corporate partners. Seeing public-private partnerships in projects like this gives me great optimism about the future of regenerative ag. Recap and reflections: ⬇️ 👩🏻🌾 - We appreciate the farmer-first conversations. 🪱 - How do we make sure investment positively impacts soil health? 🫱🏽🫲🏻 - Importance of diverse collaborations that is farmer-led. 💰 - Farmer education about capital and the investing landscape. This is why we are building FARMpreneurs™. It's our mission to be the connective tissue that helps farms become more investable. We are building the networks and tools for farmers to grow their farm's impact and transform their local food systems. Farmers need to understand the investing landscape and feel comfortable seeking capital to expand their operations or innovate on their land. The FARMpreneurs™ strategic sprint is giving farmers those tools and connections. The proof is our alumni. Figure Ate was a sponsor at Regenerative Food Systems Investment. It was also founded by Jesse Smith, an alumnus of the 2020 cohort. Our program helped him develop and refine a strategy for launching a fully regenerative value-add product from White Buffalo Land Trust. It helped him develop a rubric for testing new product opportunities and creating a strategy and presentation for his organization's board and funders. We need catalytic funding partners to amplify this work nationwide. The capital is there, but we must ensure it positively impacts more farmers, results in a more resilient local food system, and improves soil health. To empower collective ambitions and accelerate the maturation of #regenerative agriculture #finance markets – the financial sector needs examples of financing structures that contribute to regenerative transitions at scale. In July 2024, Transformational Investing in Food Systems (TIFS) partnered with Metabolic, a system change agency focused on transitioning the economy to a fundamentally sustainable state, to co-convene a week-long session at The Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center, to build systemic initiatives and financial innovations to unlock scale in regenerative agriculture. This convening provided the opportunity to practically utilize and build upon key financial structures laid out in the recent widely read report, "Financing for Regenerative Agriculture", co-authored by TIFS, Pollination, and The Rockefeller Foundation.
