The J.E.D.I Collaborative of industry peers and experts is leading this project for the natural products industry to frame the business case for embedding justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion into our entire food ecosystem. Our intent is to take a positive, forward look vs. a “fix what’s broken” position. We seek to understand the deeper issues and to devise an outline for the best solutions. We will clarify the systemic issues that require courage and thought leadership and define immediately controllable issues we all can address as an industry and in our day-to-day operations. We will develop a step-by-step approach to serve as a model to facilitate and inspire the industry to commit and take action. We will develop a reporting tool to demonstrate the impact of the project on progress. We believe the benchmark reporting will result in an increase in productivity in an increasingly multicultural marketplace.

The Whales of Guerrero Research Project (WGRP) was launched in 2013 to study the marine ecology of Southwest Pacific Mexico. In order for an improvement in marine conservation to occur, the entire community must be invested in monitoring and protection efforts. Humpback whales are gateways to engage and empower local communities in the state of Guerrero through training, ecotourism development, education, and outreach activities.

    Mission
The Cabo Pulmo Learning Center is a unique and important gathering place for students of the Cabo Pulmo community, so they can have a space to learn, study and cultivate their learning skills in a wide range of subjects.
    Description
Cabo Pulmo is a small community of 180 inhabitants, located in the southern region of the Baja California peninsula in Mexico. The coastal waters alongside our community harbor the largest coral reef in the Gulf of California, which may be the oldest reef system in the entire Pacific Northwest. Our community was traditionally dedicated to commercial and subsistence fishing, but has since recognized the tremendous ecological value of the reef and, facing the impending degradation of local fisheries, we sought official protection for our valuable marine ecosystem.

We received tremendous support from students and professors at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur (UABCS) in this conservation effort, and in 1995 the Cabo Pulmo National Park (CPNP) was officially created, which encompasses 7,111 hectares of protected marine and coastal areas. Today, this small marine park is internationally recognized as a World Heritage site by UNESCO, and a wetland of international importance by the RAMSAR convention.

We are the primary stewards of our local ecology and environment; many of our community members own small family businesses that are dedicated to ecotourism, conservation, and sustainable development. Since the establishment of the marine park, Cabo Pulmo has transformed into a marine environment with the largest concentration of fish in the entire Gulf of California. Cabo Pulmo is a model of community-based marine conservation that sets an example at the global level.

Emerging, mission-driven CPG brands that utilize unique supply chains are subject to different kinds of risk. Growers seeking to transition land to organic and regenerative practices face risk (no insurance or financial support) to grow these crops to meet the growing but unquantified demand.
Using ROC buckwheat as a case study, the study will explore a multi-stakeholder engagement and action plan to outline and address the inherent risks for all stakeholders due to the scarcity of unique and emerging supply chains.
Brands such as Lil Bucks, Pacha, Patagonia Provisions, and Philosopher Foods build products based on ROC buckwheat, uniquely managing relationships, supply planning, and demand generation.
Farmer producers can share some challenges they face in supplying these brands with buckwheat.
Operational Impacts: Cost, capital, and scale (unit economics, cost of goods, the multi-cycle needs, etc.)
The path forward: We can co-create the path forward together. We have the skills and experience to work on solutions.
Funding inventory transition for growers and brands
Coordination and pre-competitive collaboration on demand planning (power of multi-stakeholder coordination)
    Risk mitigation tactics
Collective action for marketing, promotion, and retailer engagement
    Thematic orientation
Building brands using ROC buckwheat is inherently place-based. Only a handful of brands are doing so, and even fewer growers. We can trace this product back to the field level, and we have the potential to build a purposeful supply web together that can lift all stakeholders. By shortening the supply chain and putting ingredients such as ROC buckwheat at the center of a brand, we are directly contributing to the transition of farmland to organic and regenerative practices.

Some time ago I stumbled onto a startup company seeking a simple solution to growing food where soil and weather conditions are marginal. The company, its technology and its founders impressed me. The founders created a simple affordable vertical growing system that is water, land and labor efficient. The company is Garden Tower Project.

Five benefits of Youth Gardening Projects

    1. Build an understanding of and respect for nature and our environment
    2. Motivate kids to eat and love fruits and vegetables
    3. Provide opportunities for hands-on learning, inquiry, observation and experimentation
    4. Promote physical activity and quality outdoor experiences
    5. Teach kids to nurture and care for other living things while developing patience.
