I am at that stage of Event Production where things are 98% baked and good to go, but the last 2% is making me impatient and saying WTF in my head?!! Of course, things always fall into place the way they should. Grateful for that. Two days away from the staging of our 2nd annual Beyond the Beach Summit. I attended the SUSS-Alibaba Cloud Demo Day, where I watched five start-ups pitch their innovative ideas. Thank You to the following start-ups, and best wishes on your entrepreneurial journeys: Fundigo, Social Gifting, SpedGrow, Surety, WORLD Coaches Academy Each one embraced a common theme: developing sustainable solutions for a more inclusive and sustainable society, which underscores the SUSS social mission of fostering social impact and sustainability through entrepreneurship. I was impressed by the noble causes the SUSS start-ups are addressing and the equally impressive traction they have achieved in a very short time. Attending demo days is not just about presenting; it’s also about learning, connecting, and growing. I recommend that founders, particularly early-stage founders, attend demo days. Here’s why: ➡ Networking Opportunities: These events are ideal for establishing connections and building relationships that could lead to potential collaborations, partnerships, and investments. Introduce yourself to investors and other founders. Get involved in the local community and ecosystem. ➡ Feedback and Insights: You’ll get insights from the judges' feedback about topics like business models, team composition, problem definition, traction and growth. Many judges offer suggestions for improvements. Take notes. As we mark Global Entrepreneurship Week, we recently spent time reflecting on how the South African entrepreneurial ecosystem has grown, changed and matured. Like hiking up a mountain and then stopping halfway to see how far you have come. This evolution includes inspiring Startups, SMEs, Advisors, Funders and ESOs. 🌍 Look at where we are today: Local entrepreneurs are not just business owners—they are ambassadors of growth, driving innovation, creating jobs, and making a lasting impact even across borders. We see them embracing bold solutions, tackling challenges head-on, and paving the way for the next generation of entrepreneurs. Also, consider: 👉 10-15 years ago it seemed to be more about survival, now there is more thought around commercialization, scale, innovation and sustainability. 👉 Metrics such as revenue and physical presence were top of mind, now we seek deeper analysis. 👉 Our funding models have evolved beyond grants, with a range of different instruments that now incorporate debt and equity 👉 In the past - tech, gender inclusion, and climate innovation were not at the forefront of our entrepreneurial conversations. 👉 Buzzwords like, “hustler” don't seem to be as trendy anymore, our jargon has seemingly changed possibly tied to ecosystem growth, exposure and maturity. 👉 We can now resonate more and more with those who seemed to be "untouchable" when speaking about their enormous entrepreneurial success (they should have warned us about the downside too 😅) Yes, the journey is still long and challenges can seem harder than ever. But in our opinion, the glass is not half empty, but half full. Mountain -> Onward
