🤝🥩 New partnership to produce cultivated meat at scale. Ivy Farm Technologies and Synbio Powerlabs partner to scale up the production of cultivated meat using mammalian cells in large food-grade fermenters. This collaboration is centered around Synbio's new hub, which will feature pilot-scale equipment and large-scale manufacturing vessels, including six 250,000-litre fermenters, making it the largest of its kind globally. Ivy Farm will be the first company to demonstrate the scalability of mammalian cell cultivation at this level. The initial phase will focus on transferring technology and scaling up to 10,000-litre fermenters, with plans to increase production efficiency over time. Both Richard Dillon, CEO of Ivy Farm Technologies, and Alejandro Antalich, chairman of Synbio Powerlabs, highlighted the potential of this partnership to drive innovation and efficiency in food production, positioning their companies at the forefront of the cultivated meat industry. A fantastic article showcasing the challenges and regulatory hurdles facing the novel food industry in the UK. Cliffs notes... 1️⃣ Regulatory approval for novel foods in the UK faces numerous hurdles and delays. 2️⃣ The Brexit Opportunities report of 2022 showcased 'gene editing and cultivated' meats as an economic advantage for the UK. The 'Genetic Technology Bill' designed to position the UK as a leader in agri-food research and innovation has not borne susbtantial results. 3️⃣ The UK suffers from 'three Rs', a shortage of resources, rule changes and risk appetite. 4️⃣ As a non-EU member, the UK can expedite approvals for novel foods, far quicker than the 17 month process within the EU. 5️⃣ The FSA is actively driving reform to UK law, inlcuding scrapping secondary legislation. Reducing red tape could reduce approval times by 3-6 months. 6️⃣ The UK has the capacity to be the centre of the CBD industry, but tighter controls are slowing down the approval process. 7️⃣ Regulatory bodies are in need of significant funding. Additionally, there have been calls for greater centralisation in a fragmented landscape. #Linus Pardoe, #Anthony Hopkins, #Leo Ringer, #Ed Steele, #Rebecca Sudworth, #Andrew Bennett, #Marika Graham-Woods MCIM, #Nick Morland https://lnkd.in/eseMtfFa

🔎 Novel foods in the European Union - case study 🔎 The novel food concept is often oversimplified as many companies consider it only applies to "techy" products like hashtag #cellbasedmeat or precision fermentation-derived ingredients. Sadly, this couldn't be further from the truth and the sooner you understand this, the easier it will be to assess the feasibility of your regulatory strategy. Read below the story of the humble oats, that despite being eaten in the European Union for more than 3000 years, can still be considered novel. --- 😄 If you like this post and need more clarity on how the EU regulatory framework works for novel foods, sign up for our brand new self-paced online course on EU novel foods for non-lawyers. 🚆On the way to Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung (BfR) to present Alexandra Molitorisová‘s and my research on regulatory #sandboxes in #EU #Food #Law at its #FoodTec Conference (https://lnkd.in/eF5GBgHW). We found that 👉 sandboxes in FoodTec can be categorised according to risk profiles in Open, Semi-Open, and Closed Sandboxes 👉 legislative action is needed to realise the full potential of FoodTec sandboxes 👉 „placing on the market“ is a strict concept in EU Food Law, which only allows for very limited application of FoodTec sandboxes 👉 due to uncertainty regarding the scope of harmonisation at EU level, Member States are reluctant to take regulatory action We received generous support for our research from the #SimonNüsselStiftung and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation grant agreement 465588286 Faculty of Life Sciences @Uni Bayreuth - Campus Kulmbach Food Valley Kulmbach Universität Bayreuth

We are looking forward to Anuga FoodTec 2024. To get you in the mood, we have collected quotes on the future of the altprotein industry. This time we hear Dr. Wolfgang Kühnl (InFamily Foods Holding): “One of the biggest and most important issues is the clear identification of policies and regulations that will enable the growth of the alternative protein industry. These include legal frameworks for safety and labeling, financial incentives for research and development and support for infrastructure development and market access. The second key issue is consumer education and acceptance. Many consumers are influenced by past negative experiences or factually incorrect media reports. Here we need to work together to overcome these prejudices and convince them with positive experiences. However, we can only achieve this with the support of everyone: politicians, retailers, manufacturers and the media.“ Visit our editors session live on main stage „Responsibility“ in hall 9 on Tuesday, March 19 from 3:20 pm – 5:00 pm, and on “Innovation Stage” in hall 5.2 on Thursday, March 21 from 3:45 pm – 5:45 pm.

Breaking News for Plant-Based Producers 🚨 The European Court of Justice has ruled that terms like “burger”, “steak”, and “sausage” can be used for plant-based products, as long as the labelling is clear and not misleading. 🌱🍔 This is a major win for the plant-based industry, ensuring transparency while allowing the use of familiar terms. With France's controversial decree aiming to restrict these terms now blocked, what does this mean for other countries like Italy, where similar regulations are being considered? Join the debate—should plant-based products freely use these terms? #veganok #vegan #Regulations #PlantBased #Transparency https://lnkd.in/di7erEUi
