I owe The Riyadh product community the truth! I’m not going to follow the crowd in KSA and tell you false truths just because they are popular and trending in Riyadh. I will always tell you how to be an effective product manager even if it opposes strong beliefs people have, some common examples: 1. Marty Cagyn’s inspired is game changing! Reality: It’s actually very misleading, companies are not built around product teams. Product teams are a support function for sales and operations. 2. Agile is the answer to product problems! Reality: actually not that important, so minimise talk about it and talk about your key business objectives, metrics, user feedback etc and how you can positively impact these areas! 3. Mastering Jira is critical! Reality: Jira is one tool and there are many others you can use. Product Management is not about tools, it’s about driving impact for your business and users. 4. Spending hours writing user stories Reality: Product Managers are not just ticket writers. They need be storytellers representing users and business strategic goals with data and real life examples. The sooner these hard truths are understood, the sooner product management will grow in Riyadh, Jeddah and the rest of KSA! #ProductManagement #Riyadh

I have also been a victim to this misconception. However, in my recent explorations about the field of Product Management, I have come to realize that its more about the outcome as a product and its business impact, rather than the technicalities of how it is developed. #productmanagement #productmanagers #productowners
Many Product Managers today have an exaggerated focus on "being technical" I.e. sql queries, api calls with Postman, understanding every technical detail of what the engineers are discussing etc. This creates misconceptions around being a Product Manager in KSA where the domain is new & immature. Technical expertise can be valuable, however, the following areas are often ignored yet they are just as critical for driving outcomes as a PM: 1. Strong business/commercial acumen 2. Financial awareness 3. Understanding marketing and growth opportunities 4. Leveraging the power of continuous discovery 5. Quick validation without code 6. UX/UI fluency #Productmanagement #Riyadh

Simply and effectively put by Muhammed Zaulifqar - product is tedious and complex and can lead to frequent frustrations at all levels. Communication and understanding can go a long way in resolving these frustrations. #productmanagement
One of the big challenges product teams have when entering into KSA companies for the first time and trying to convince them that product will really help their organisation is that in takes time to get meaningful results through user discovery, building strategy, getting deep into data etc then waiting for engineers to execute Also add on top of this product management is not really a role that you can outsource like engineering and UX. it’s critical to have local presence due to the stakeholder management and alignment heavy nature of the role. Also a Product Manager needs a wider product team with designers, copywriters, product analysts etc So you have long waiting time for results + high salaries to pay + lack of understanding of the role = frustrated leadership … To manage expectations: 1. Over communicate with senior leadership 2. Focus on some short term tactical wins to gain their support 3. Show them user pain points and bring them on interviews 4. Highlight opportunities that we could exploit which we haven’t The idea is be proactive, get them excited about product and show them why product teams are amazing! Don’t leave them to suffer in silence!

Riyadh needs more product leaders to take a step back and educate the local community on the basics of product management before selling ‘Hollywood case studies’ from USA and Europe. Many people have major misunderstandings and misconceptions on the product management role. Time should be given to clarify one misunderstood point at a time for example: 1. What is agile? How much I invest in learning it? Should I take a scrum master qualification? Etc 2. I don’t use data at work, should I start? What metrics should I be tracking? How can I track? 3. What is user discovery? We do interviews like once every 2-3 months, that’s enough right? 4. We don’t really estimate or plan our work. Typically, we don’t have a roll out strategy….we just like to launch. 5. Our engineering and product teams always clash because the requirements are not clear and engineers are just too slow etc etc etc Taking the time and addressing each one of these points one at a time will be far more valuable to the community then hearing fantasy case studies from the west which is a completely different reality. #Riyadh #ProductManagement
