Guiding executives, teams and professionals through challenging transitions to change while strengthening their resilience and well-being | Leadership development consulting | Career transition consulting

Why is it so hard to find a job right now? That was the title of an article in Fast Company from a week ago or so. several possible reasons were given including: Recent layoffs have spilled a lot of great people on the market so competition is greater (Seems likely) Candidates who are using AI to build their resumes are getting hired faster (Is that really true?) Employers are being pickier with so much talent to choose from (Seems likely) What do you think? https://lnkd.in/gXqPy5YB

I've been writing a lot about this topic for a while now: https://www.forbes.com/sites/jackkelly/2023/02/24/theres-a-white-collar-richcession-while-blue-collar-and-frontline-workers-see-wage-growth-and-more-job-opportunities/?sh=3f09c3535caa Companies are moving jobs to other countries outside the US to arbitrage the vast difference in compensation. Executives believe that AI will ultimately take over a large swarth of jobs, and are holding off hiring to see how things will play out. With high inflation, rising costs, companies are tightening the belt and cutting costs which includes layoffs. There's a move towards gig/contract/temp jobs as opposed to full time permanent positions so that businesses won't have to worry about paying health benefits, vacation time, PTO, and can let them go anytime they want.

While I agree broadly, this part doesn't feel right to me. "It doesn’t help that “AI has leveled the playing field for the résumé,” she says. Nearly half of job seekers are using AI to boost their résumés, and research shows that they’re more likely to be hired. That everyone can have a really strong résumé now is making competition more difficult, she explains." How does one measure this, exactly? That feels like an assertion free of supporting evidence.

Good points in the article about being patient and realistic.

Terrence H. Seamon, the idea that AI-crafted resumes might be speeding up hiring is fascinating and scary. Candidates need to continuously adapt and innovate in their job search strategies!
