I cannot speak highly enough about the great program that the North Central Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce puts on every year. Being a young(er) leader in an organization, especially one that oversees higher-level employees, can be challenging in ways you may not initially realize. Building camaraderie and professional relationships with a smaller and smaller number of peers as you move up the chain can be isolating. The Community Leadership Insitute (CLI) can provide young leaders with the peer-to-peer guidance, professional relationships, and frankly friendships that are so critical to the growth of young leaders in Central Mass. For a region that is often times overlooked, NCMCoC is doing their part to prepare the next cohort of true economic and community leaders. Excited to lend my experience to the National Small Business Association and advocate for small businesses to our federal delegation, particularly around the rising cost of healthcare 🏥 Stomping Ground Strategies is proud to fully cover the cost of healthcare for our employees, but most small (and large) businesses don't. We spend roughly one-third of our lives at work (and another third thinking about work 🙃 ), and that takes a toll on everyone's mental and physical wellbeing. The LEAST employers can do is pay for healthcare. But make no mistake, it's expensive and most small businesses can't afford it. Small businesses make up 43.5% of the U.S.'s GDP. We're economic drivers, and as such, we should be able to support our workforce and their health, so they in turn can keep our economy healthy & strong.

Thanks for championing a liberal arts education, which lays the foundation for lifelong learning, nurturing an innate curiosity and the ability to ask deeper, more insightful questions. By exploring various disciplines, students gain a holistic understanding of the world, allowing them to connect ideas across fields and foster innovation. This education also emphasizes ethical reasoning and civic responsibility, shaping graduates into not just skilled professionals but also conscientious global citizens. In an era of rapid technological and industrial change, the adaptability and resilience fostered by a liberal arts education are crucial, equipping individuals to learn new skills and pivot their careers as needed. Moreover, by engaging with diverse cultures, histories, and philosophies, students develop empathy and effective communication skills, essential for building strong relationships and leading with understanding in both professional and personal realms.

The more I learn about VEL, the more I understand its significance. It’s not a networking group, or a lead generating service or a pay-to-play opportunity. VEL is a choice. They don’t do the cutting or even act as the scissors. You do the work, but VEL helps you understand where and how to start. As the balloon climbs, a greater perspective is found. One that shows more of the road ahead and the purpose behind the effort. “Discovering Parts Within” is the cornerstone program VEL stands on. It welcomes a very small amount of candidates each year. This happened this week to my kids when meeting with teachers! #KnowBetter #DoBetter The Misunderstandings of Monolingual Approaches: A Call for Change For too long, many educators have advised bilingual parents to prioritize English at home, believing that it would help their children succeed academically. While often well-intentioned, this advice is not only outdated but can also harm students and families. Research shows that encouraging bilingualism benefits cognitive development, academic achievement, and emotional well-being. When parents are told to focus solely on English, it dismisses the importance of their home language and culture. This not only puts unnecessary pressure on families but also risks alienating children from their linguistic heritage. Bilingualism is an asset, not a barrier, and students who maintain their home language alongside English often outperform their monolingual peers in the long run. Instead of urging parents to prioritize English over their native language, educators should promote additive bilingualism—encouraging students to become fluent in both languages. Building literacy in the home language strengthens English acquisition, fosters confidence, and creates a bridge between school and family life. It’s time to move away from the harmful misconception that English proficiency must come at the expense of other languages. We must empower families to nurture multilingualism and embrace the richness it brings to classrooms and communities. Educators can make the most impact by shifting from a deficit mindset to one that celebrates the diverse linguistic assets students bring to the table.

Annually, the Hispanic Collaborative and the African American Leadership Alliance of Milwaukee (AALAM) publish Well-Being Indexes that offer a comparative view of how Milwaukee’s Black and Brown communities are progressing compared to peer metros. The indexes show that while progress is being made, we need to pick up the pace. Cross-sector collaboration, meaning a true shared vision and responsibility, is required to address our issues at scale to create a stronger Milwaukee region.
