For 16 years, the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) has held constant at 12 teams. The league is now planning to grow 33% over the next 4 years. Just 6 months since the Golden State Warriors announced a new WNBA team coming to the Bay, Commissioner Cathy Engelbert is "pretty confident" that the league will grow to 14 teams by 2026 and 16 teams by 2028. Now is the moment for the WNBA to jump in the spotlight: 🏀 18.7 million viewers watched the NCAA Women's March Madness Final between Iowa and South Carolina 🏀 Caitlin Clark's No. 1 selection by the Indiana Fever at the 2024 WNBA Draft drove the choice to put 36 of 40 Fever games on national broadcasts 🏀 Current TV deals with ESPN, CBS, Amazon and ION Media Networks end after the 2025 season, creating an opening for a new rights negotiation 🏀 Engelbert named Philadelphia, Toronto; Portland, Denver, Nashville, Tennessee, and South Florida as potential expansion destinations. __ 💡 My takeaway → The soaring momentum for women's sports provides a leading indicator for where to find career opportunities. Access to mental health care remains a critical issue in the U.S. According to NAMI, nearly 60% of adults with a mental illness didn’t receive mental health services in the past year. In Texas, this challenge is compounded by a shortage of qualified supervisors. A recent survey by the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council found that over 75% of 10,233 mental health providers are not supervising anyone, and over 50% of 7,600 respondents are not interested in serving as supervisors. This shortage significantly impacts mental health access in many areas. At Brave Health, we’re committed to making a difference. Last night Alex and I spoke at the Personal Selling class at University of Portland We’ve been guest speakers for a couple of years now + it’s always a blast to chat with the kids 💜 Something struck me last night as we were chatting: We are extremely compatible and our ideas build on each other… We both have ~15 years of experience in selling and have found success… …but our approach is TOTALLY different. I speak in feelings and metaphors. Alex speaks in frameworks and concepts. I love to chat about the grand vision. Alex always brings it back to the next step. But the middle of our Venn diagram includes: ⚡have fun and follow your heart ⚡don't be afraid to make mistakes ⚡treat people with kindness (especially yourself) So what do I make of this? That there are many paths up the mountain. That our path will  look different than others (and that’s great!). That success is most often found by leaning into our natural strengths. What the heck is going on in college athletics? Cliff notes (but a long read): Colleges are proposing to be able to pay players directly next season. Not all schools will. Athletes haven't actually been included, though their interest has been legally represented. All athletes at a school can share in yearly revenue up to a total of a capped ~$20.5 million (rising ~4% yearly). However, schools awarding Alston payments (awards given to students for academic-related expenses up to ~$6,000 per athlete) & additional scholarships will lower their ~$20.5 mil by up to $2.5 mil each for Alston and added scholarships, to potentially $15.5 mil. Football programs at Ohio State, Georgia, etc. will exceed $20 mil in payments so the need for a collective or entity to facilitate payments will be needed. Schools will be paying athletes in other sports so this capped amount is deleterious for athletes, particularly because the capped amount is rising at 4% vs. the 40%+ growth of the NIL market. Deloitte will be moderating fair market value evaluations of athlete NIL deals. The adage of "something only being worth what someone will pay for it" will apply mostly everywhere, except the NCAA, who assigned Deloitte to say what a deal is worth. Scholarships will all be able to be awarded partially or fully. No more "head count" sports or "equivalency" sports. Any scholarship can be full or partial. Roster sizes are changing. I've linked the absurd recalculations of roster sizes. 30 person women's wrestling team? You got it! 24 person men's fencing team? En garde! This roster size changing may bring more lawsuits. Football has avg. roster size of 128, but now will be105. Baseball has had 11.7 scholarships for decades. Both of the above could be restricting opportunity unfairly so litigation may continue on either or both. The NCAA spent over $61 million on lawsuits last year. Can't wait to see what this year's # is! The NCAA is attempting to regulate the transfer portal by narrowing the permissible windows of transfer. Coaches will still be able to leave whenever they want though. Athletes will continue to go to the highest bidder in some, but not all, cases. Could you imagine leaving Stanford for Texas Tech?!?! Phenomenal softball player NiJaree Canady did....for $1.2 million. Schools & collectives will continue to recruit athletes with the promise of financial incentive, aka inducement, which is illegal according to the NCAA. But the NCAA can't really enforce rules around inducement. The NCAA is led by a former politician, Charlie Baker, who is wielding his political might to try and keep the NCAA's amateur model in place. For decades, the athletes mostly of football & basketball have created the value through which the NCAA has made money and ancillary sports have been able to exist. Are your powersports vendors operating in compliance with your state laws? Violating state franchise laws can result in significant financial penalties, and the fines can add up quickly. Imagine a daily fine of $10,000 not just for each day, but for every infraction at each dealer in a state. This could easily escalate to millions of dollars per day for major brands with numerous dealers. Franchise laws, often crafted with the influence of auto dealer associations, protect both auto and powersports dealers. For example, in Texas, the motor vehicle commission can impose fines up to $10,000 per day per violation if a vendor fails to comply with the statutes. This emphasizes the importance for dealers to be aware of and enforce these laws to avoid hefty penalties. Dealers should understand that vendors might not always willingly comply with local statutes, often using the dealer's lack of knowledge to their advantage. Only a small percentage of dealers are familiar with the specific laws in their states. For instance, the Texas Automobile Dealers Association has already notified several vendors of non-compliance. While some vendors seek solutions, others are slow to respond, risking substantial fines and potential loss of their retail licenses. The TMDA prefers collaborative solutions, but if vendors do not act promptly, formal complaints and significant penalties are imminent. This situation is not unique to Texas; many states have similar statutes and enforcement mechanisms, underscoring the necessity for vendors to comply promptly to avoid severe repercussions. One of former basketball strength and conditioning coach, now speaker and author, Alan Stein, Jr.’s most famous quotes is: “Are the *habits* you have today on par with the *dreams* you have for tomorrow?” Great question! Why? Because the concept of “cause and effect” is much more powerful than the concept of luck. And certain powerful habits are typically the causes that induce the effects resulting in success. Determine (whether on your own, through books or other media, or via a business/success coach) if the specific habits you currently have are most likely to result in your future dreams/goals becoming a reality. If the answer is no, then of course you have a choice: either upgrade your habits or lessen your dreams/goals. Either choice is fine if it is more likely to lead to your personal sense of happiness. Though hopefully you’ll choose option one. Then again, if the answer is yes? Then keep doing what you’re doing! Awesome!
