King’s "Traffic Jam Whopper" campaign is a perfect example of marketing leading and directing the way for data teams to execute the vision. Marketing identified a consumer pain point — people stuck in traffic in one of the worst cities with traffic jams in the world CDMX— Burger King saw a unique opportunity to turn it into a value-driven, customer-centric solution. They set clear parameters dictated by marketing: use real-time traffic data to deliver Whoppers directly to vehicles in high-traffic areas.
Here’s how it worked:
Marketing set the vision: They crafted the concept based on consumer behavior, building a persona of commuters in gridlock who would appreciate convenience and a hot meal.
Data teams executed: Using real-time traffic data, they created an algorithm that identified congestion zones. The app then pushed location-based offers to users stuck in these areas.
Together, they delivered: Marketing guided the strategy, while data and IT built the tools that turned this idea into a successful, targeted campaign.
By establishing clear marketing criteria — a consumer persona, behavior insights, and campaign goals — marketing led, and the data team built the infrastructure to bring it to life. This collaboration showcases the power of marketing as the driver of innovation, with data teams supporting to create more consumer-centric campaigns that deliver real value.
