As SXSW unfolds, starting with SXSW EDU yesterday, and Interactive on Saturday, I can't help but look back. To March 10, 2000. Little did we know that night that the NASDAQ was set to pop. The dot com bubble was to burst. However, almost 25 years later, the Web, and all that has followed, did not burst. It instead exploded into powerful innovations, connections, and new forms of commerce. That night in March, at the dawn of a new millennium, we hosted the first Texas eComm Ten Awards and presented awards to the top ten leaders around Texas powering this new future (from Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner to Terrell Jones, David Sikora, Hank Stringer and many others). Michael Dell was a keynote, along with Flip Filipowski, then of Divine Interventures, and perhaps the funniest moment was when Mayor Kirk Watson presented a key to the city to Dan Rather, who was our MC. Kirk said, "Dan, you're the investigative reporter. I don't know whether this opens a door or closes it, but I'm sure you can find out!" We followed the black tie gala with a cross-over party (coordinated with Hugh Forrest, now co-president of SXSW). Like my first LinkedIn post of the year, I believe in the power of people. Our technology revolution has never been about the tech, the code, or the servers, it has always been about the people. True now. True then. (p.s. Chris Greta is the designer of this cool spike that all guests received as well as the award itself. The awards, also designed by Chris, were made of melted down railway spikes, symbolizing the railway tracks that first connected our great nation just like the Internet continues to connect us today.)
