Last week, the United Nations concluded the 29th COP Summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, adding a significant chapter to the global fight against climate change. The 29th United Nations climate change conference (#COP29) kicked off on November 11 in Baku, #Azerbaijan, with some 53,000 attending. Building on previous negotiations, the #UNclimatesummit is expected to seal and ensure efforts toward climate justice, focusing primarily on providing vulnerable nations with adequate funding to adapt to and recover from the impacts of climate change. Here is a recap of everything that happened during COP29 week 1. 1) Parties welcomed the adoption of new standards by the #Article6.4 Supervisory Body for the creation of #carboncredits under Article 6.4. These standards ensure the integrity of the carbon market, focusing on real, additional, verified, and measurable emissions reductions. The standards are flexible and can be updated by Parties as needed. 2) Countries such as #Brazil, #UK, #Indonesia and #UAE expressed renewed commitment to climate action through 2035 emissions reduction targets with their NDC submissions. 3) The world’s largest multilateral development banks (MDBs) announced an ambitious new climate finance goal. They committed to ramping up annual funding to $120 billion by 2030 for low- and middle-income countries. 4) Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev led a summit with SIDS leaders to address climate resilience and finance access. The “#BakuDeclaration” was adopted, highlighting SIDS' unique climate vulnerabilities and Azerbaijan’s role in amplifying their voices at COP29. 5) The #BakuCoalitionDeclaration for the Green Climate Transition of #SMEs was signed by officials. 6) COP29 Presidency officially launched COP29 Energy Initiatives calling for endorsements for the COP29 Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge, the COP29 Green Energy Zones and Corridors Pledge, and the COP29 Hydrogen Declaration. 7) Declaration on Green Digital Action launched at COP29 to curb the sector’s emissions.
