During COP29’s Global Climate Action High Level Closing Event, COP28 CEO Adnan Amin re-emphasized the role of the Action Agenda as a critical lever to boost inclusivity and attract a diverse set of stakeholders to deliver solutions, and described it as a key element of the COP process going forward. The COP28 CEO commended the efforts of the Marrakech Partnership and the leadership of the High-Level Champions, Razan Al Mubarak and Nigar Arpadarai, in raising all-of-society ambition in Baku. He stressed the importance of leveraging this opportunity to renew the mandate of the Champions at COP29, to ensure continuity and maintaining a focus on inclusion and support for the implementation of the Paris Agreement goals. #COP28 #UAEConsensus #COP29

🌍 4th Meeting of COP29 Azerbaijan International Advisory Committee: Driving Climate Action Forward 🌿 November 17, 2024, Baku: The COP29 Presidency hosted the 4th meeting of the International Advisory Committee (IAC), bringing together distinguished leaders and experts to shape the second week of COP29 negotiations. Key highlights: 🔹 Mukhtar Babayev, COP29 President, set the tone by outlining priorities for negotiations and the critical role of IAC members. 🔹 Jean Baderschneider moderated discussions, emphasizing cross-sector collaboration. 🔹 Nigar Arpadarai, High-Level Climate Champion, showcased impactful initiatives like the Business, Investment, and Philanthropy Climate Platform, uniting 1000 global leaders. 🔹 Leyla Hasanova, Youth Climate Champion, spotlighted youth engagement as a cornerstone for sustainable solutions. The Committee also explored strategies on mitigation, adaptation, loss and damage, and more, with insights from eminent leaders like Tarja Halonen, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, and Todd Stern. What an impactful Slush Week in Helsinki, thanks everyone! The journey continues, and I am reflecting on COP29 as a follow-up to our recent seminar in Boston with Dr. Matti Goldberg and others. Here is how I understand the outcomes: THE GOOD 🤗 COP29 in Baku brought meaningful steps forward, including a $300 billion annual commitment by 2035 to support developing nations and a new global framework for carbon credit trading. These are critical milestones, showcasing the power of international collaboration. THE BAD 😫 However, gaps remain. The funding falls short of what’s needed, and the lack of a clear fossil fuel phase-out plan underscores the challenges ahead. Yet, the determination of nations, businesses, and advocates to push for progress inspires hope. THE UGLY 😳 COP29 is a reminder that the fight against climate change requires relentless collaboration and action. We can and must build a sustainable future together, but whether we are committed remains uncertain. Exciting News: Selected for COP in My City 2024 Program! COP29 Azerbaijan I'm thrilled to share that I've been selected to participate in the COP in My City 2024 program! This incredible opportunity perfectly aligns with my passion for climate action and sustainability, enabling me to engage with like-minded individuals and experts dedicated to creating a positive impact on our environment. The COP in My City initiative is a youth-led project that empowers young people to simulate COP (Conference of the Parties) negotiations within their own cities. It's a unique platform for learning, networking, and advocating for stronger climate policies at both local and global levels. Through this program, I'll collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds, tackle pressing environmental issues, and contribute to shaping our planet's future. I'm particularly excited about the hands-on experience and knowledge this program offers, from navigating complex climate negotiations to developing actionable strategies for our communities. 🌍 COP29 - Revisiting COP and its importance 🌍   ⚠️ With #COP29 underway today in Baku, Azerbaijan, it's easy to get lost in the buzz of the mega-event. But it's also important to remind ourselves what the event is, why it is important, and its relevance to global climate actions.   ✔️ The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the supreme decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Through the work of this UN body that coordinates global action on climate change, COP events encourage Parties (UN Member States) to commit to take voluntary actions to prevent dangerous anthropogenic (i.e., caused by humans) interference with the climate system.   ➡️ In its annual summit, world leaders, scientists, activists, and industry experts gather to tackle one of the biggest challenges of our time - climate change. All Member States that are Parties to the Convention are represented at the COP, at which they report on progress on climate action implementation, set intermediate goals, make agreements to share scientific and technological knowledge for global benefit, negotiate policy deals and adopt legal instruments to promote the effective implementation of the UNFCCC (UN Climate Change).   ❓ Why is it so important? ❓ Attention to such COP events is highly warranted. This is where critical decisions are made on global efforts to protect our planet, drive sustainable development, and promote renewable energy to aid in the global energy transition. Initiatives like the Paris Agreement, aimed to keep global temperature rise below 2°C, were born here. Discussions and commitments made at COP shape the future for all of us. COP decisions indicate a level of consensus, with large countries (US, China) getting the same voting rights as smaller ones.   From the first COP in Berlin in 1995 to COP29 in Baku, we have come a long way. But there is a much longer way to go.
