Perfect timing for my second blog to be released, as today is the day that Ontario Regulation 41/24 under the #ConservationAuthoritiesAct comes into effect! Within this blog we explore the updated definition to watercourses. This is a topic that has come up on several of my projects and I believe that the refinements to the definition will provide additional clarity when determining if a drainage feature is a watercourse or a headwater drainage feature. It was also important for me to note that just because a drainage feature doesn’t meet this new watercourse definition, it does not mean that this feature can be removed without management. Rather, it would still need to be managed in accordance with the HDF Guideline. Each year, valuable citizen science data collected from An Taisce's Clean Coasts #BigBeachClean24 survey adds to global statistics on marine litter. It's also been a beneficial resource for the Irish government and used to inform Clean Coasts campaigns & evidence-based action initiatives. Taking the time to identify and count litter found on our coastline is important as it gives an indication of the scale of the marine litter issue and helps us to identify the types of activities and industries that create the most common litter items. In its current form sustainable finance/green finance is only sustainable for wealth holders, predominantly protecting capital from 'climate risks' when these translate into financial ones relevant to their portfolios. Reporting on ESG data (and TCFD, TNFD, and so on) doesn't contribute to any wealth redistribution, mostly reinforcing existing power relations and social inequalities. It won't make any difference to the life of people and ecosystems who need it the most and are the most vulnerable. Yet it has major implications for public life and the commons. We need multiple ways to hold the powerful accountable. Independent investigative journalism is one of them. This looks much more effective & necessary than ESG reporting ⤵

The first Annual Report from California’s Multibenefit Land Repurposing Program came out this week and it’s exciting to see growing capacity and collaboration to support water sustainability in California. MLRP brings needed funds to high-priority and critically overdrafted basins, enhancing resilience by repurposing the least-viable agricultural lands in ways that support local needs including protecting communities and the environment.
