If the problem is not well defined, we risk: 1. Solving the wrong problem. 2. Creating a new problem. 3. Wasting valuable resources. #problemsolving #leansixsigma #problemdefinition A problem definition should include: 1. What is occurring? 2. Where is the occurrence? 3. When did the problem start? 4. What is the extent of the problem? Need help solving a problem? Make progress today! All too often, I hear a leadership team state plans to "…study that problem soon. We should schedule something in the next week or two." This makes problem solving sound monumental and it doesn't have to be. Sometimes it falls through the cracks. How difficult would it be to get a small team together today? Tomorrow? There are simple problem solving tools like A3 that can give your team a template to follow and ensure the effort remains focused. Whether it follows a PDCA cycle or DMAIC, there should be an expectation of action from the A3 session. Not every solution needs to be absolute; would you take a 20% reduction in the problem from 60-90 minutes of the team's work? Take the win, move the needle and attack the problem again. I can show you how. Be safe and have a great week. More on A3 problem solving soon. Scott

Frustrated by the lack of progress in your meetings? Try this: use a simple process for solving problems and making better decisions. EOS Worldwide has such a process: I - identify (before you start a discussion, first identify what the issue really is. What's the root problem? Get clear on what the true challenge is, then move to a healthy discussion!) D - discuss (healthy discussion is open and honest, clear and concise, respectful and patient. When you begin repeating yourself, move to solve!) S - solve (solve the problem or issue at the root level, so that it goes away forever and it's for the greater good of the organization!)
