How many times does a typical Roblox user actually come to the platform to play games each day? Thanks to some incredible data from GameAnalytics, I discovered that over half of Roblox users (tracked in experiences using GameAnalytics) are playing a Roblox game at least twice a day. And a quarter of players are coming back to Roblox at least 3 times a day. What about power users? The top 5% are coming nearly 6 times a day! When you add up all of these sessions throughout the day, it's easier to understand how the avg time spent per DAU on Roblox is 2.5 hours. Based on this data, you can see that 2.5 hours isn't usually made up of one monster session, but rather smaller bite-sized sessions. Thanks to Allison Bilas for sharing this rich data and collaborating with me on this 2023 Roblox report. GameAnalytics is hosting a roundtable lunch at #gdc2024, where I'll be reviewing the full Roblox report. If you're interested in attending, reach out to me or Allison Bilas (and let her know you saw my post). "Is Roblox safe for my 7 (or 8, or 10) -year-old?" 🤷🏽♂️ I field this question at almost all of our parent talks. But I think it’s the wrong question. Because: ➡️ Roblox isn't 1 game or 1 experience. ➡️ Roblox has > 40M games! 40M unique experiences! ➡️ Created by people all over the world. ➡️ Some kids have created amazing Roblox experiences. There’s even a “university” where kids can learn to code. ➡️ Roblox also has sex rooms called “condo games.” ➡️ 70M people use Roblox daily. 250M monthly. ➡️ 67% of users are < age 16. Roblox now prioritizes content creation to cater to the 33% who are no longer children. ➡️ Roblox is a publicly traded company. ➡️ Users spend an average of 156 minutes a day playing Roblox. ➡️ Roblox had 14.5 billion hours of use in Q1 2023. That's 1.7 million years in just 3 months. When we understand what Roblox actually is, I think we can ask different, better questions. Like: ➡️ Can my elementary child handle millions of game choices? ➡️ If my child sees a nude Roblox avatar, do they know what to do? ➡️ Is my child ready to see words like "r*pe" or "s*x room?" even with asterisks? ➡️ Do I want my child in a gaming environment where 33% of the users are aged 17+? ➡️ Does my child know exactly how to handle interactions with people they don't know online? 70M is a lot of people. ➡️ If my child loves to code, am I committed to being involved enough to know if any harm occurs? ➡️ How do I feel about a digital space so neurologically compelling that users spent 1.7M years playing it in just 3 months? ➡️ As a parent, have I played Roblox often? It’s critical to “feel” its features. They can be intense and creepy. I'm not trying to shame anyone who allows their child to play Roblox. I know kids who play and have never had a horrible experience. But, too many parents have allowed their children to use it and have never played it themselves. I truly want to help you make informed decisions about your amazing kids during their one, precious childhood. My personal stance? No elementary child should use it. Junior high only if you’re highly involved. Parenting with you! Chris

Roblox and Minecraft have been the focus of GameSafe protection from its inception. Since that time, we have noticed that along with Roblox’s user growth and its skyrocketing valuations, there has been a correlation between Roblox’s allowing (and monetizing) independent developers to become creators of experiences and a rise in the incidences of predator activity in these experiences. The danger children encounter can be found in server experiences such as “Escape to Epstein Island,” “Diddy Party,” and even the seemingly innocuous public swimming room. Although Roblox has made efforts in the past to eliminate servers that are designed specifically for questionable and sexual content, such as the “Boom Boom Rooms” of the past and other graphic experiences that are not age-restricted, their moderation efforts, content reviews, and age restriction efforts are insufficient. At GameSafe, we have witnessed and documented cases (many cases, in fact) where it is evident that adults are grooming children and speaking to them in disgusting sexual ways. ***UPDATE*** I wanted to recognize #ROBLOX for their efforts in taking down some of the egregious experiences we have highlighted as unsafe. In the last ten days, I have personally seen these experiences being removed. THANK YOU, Roblox, for taking action, and we applaud your concern for our children. As the father of two young ladies who are avid Roblox players, I am excited that my children can play on the platform, especially since they are also supported by the GameSafe application. What I hope for is a safe environment for my girls to interact with their friends in, and if GameSafe can support gaming companies like Roblox in ensuring this, then its a huge win for our kids.

Great quote from John Benyamine in VentureBeat about new insights from the Roblox Developers Conference! Fresh off the RDC, John spoke on how Roblox’s game-changing new revenue split will empower brands to invest more in Roblox: “Basically, with Roblox giving up to a 70% revenue share, this is them making a proper move to try and get premium games into their platform in a big way. We are already talking to game publishers about bringing significant popular game IP into Roblox, and this is just going to make it easier and more enticing. We fully expect big publishers and developers to look at Roblox as another viable platform for much bigger experiences.” https://lnkd.in/emBYyjtX John Benyamine and Krishna Singh were invited to attend last week's conference, and are available to share additional insights and thoughts on the impact Roblox’s massive and growing audience can have on your business. #RDConference #Roblox #GamingMarketing #GamingAdvertising

🤔 Ever wondered how often Roblox users engage with the platform daily? Our 2023 data reveal that over half of tracked Roblox users play a game on the platform at least twice a day, and a quarter of them even three times. For power users, the top 5% are frequent visitors, coming back nearly six times daily! 🤯 These findings shed light on the typical Roblox user's behavior, explaining the average daily time spent per DAU, which stands at 2.5 hours divided into bite-sized sessions throughout the day. How much money does a typical Roblox user spend in Roblox games? For the top 5% of Roblox games (that are using GameAnalytics), paying players are spending $15 per year. Paying players could be spending on gamepasses, in-game soft currencies, cosmetic items, celebrations, vehicles and more. Why is monetization important beyond just driving revenue to the developer? Because monetization is an important factor that drives organic discovery via the Roblox algorithm. The algorithm favors games that are successful at converting players into payers, granting these games greater visibility across the platform. If you're building a branded experience on Roblox, make sure you consider what your monetization strategy is, even if revenue isn't an important KPI. That's because driving revenue can lead to greater organic reach and visits. Thanks to Allison Bilas at GameAnalytics for sharing this rich data and collaborating with me on this 2023 Roblox report.
